All About
Crowdfunding
By Emily Maniquet
In today’s society, social
media is a powerful tool
for connecting causes
with those who would
support them (5)
Social media platforms allow for
people to come together from
all over the world to support
one another and help make a
positive impact on society (2)
How
Crowdfunding
Started
Crowdfunding Websites Kickstart
IndieGoGo
Rocket Hub
GoFundMe
Razoo
Crowdrise
Etc.
Crowdfunding started as a way to fund creative projects (6)
Independent artist, filmmakers, and
musicians would use crowdfunding sites to
raise money for their projects (1)
They would target a lot of people and
encourage them to all make a small
donation through the site (1)
Crowdfunding is now being used
for a wide variety of more personal
needs, such as paying for school or
funding research projects (1)
What Crowdfunding has Become
On the crowdfunding site, GoFundMe, the
education category has grown to over 160,000
campaigns just in 2015 (1)
More small charities and
research projects have turned
to crowdfunding because they
are being overlooked by
larger and more established
ones (8)
Crowdfunding has allowed for
smaller charities to find
supporters through social
media (8)
Types of
Crowdfunding
1. Donation-based funding
2. Investment funding
Donation based funding
is when people who
supported a campaign
receive a reward (10)
Donation
based
crowdfunding
is one of the
most common
types (3)
Investment-based
funding is when people
just support a campaign
and receive nothing in
return (10)
Clicktivism
Clicktivism/slactivism/hashtag activism has been seen as a
derogatory term (9)
“Clicktivism is
not exclusively
the support or
promotion of a
cause online. It is
the use of digital
media for
facilitating social
change and
activism” (9)
People think that clicking a button to
“share” something is worthless and
people should actually do something
rather then sit behind screens (9)
People believe that
awareness does nothing,
but in reality, it always does
something (9)
Overexposure is
necessary in
todays age of
constant
information (9)
Awareness is
extremely
important
because it takes
7-8 times for a
person to look at
something and
actually take
action (9)
Clicktivism isn’t done to solve problems, its done
to bring awareness (9)
To have a successful campaign, it is
much more than using #hashtags (5)
There must be a plan! (5)
Once supporters have clicked, they
must stay engaged in order for them to
want to donate (5)
How to Have a Successful Campaign
"What I typically see people do
with personal crowdfunding is
just blast it on Facebook as an
update, saying, 'Please give me
money, please share, please
donate.' That's the worst way to
do it.” (1)
Tips
1. Share a story - People can connect better (8)
2. PR outreach - spread the word (8)
3. Know your audience (10)
    - there are 3 layers to one’s crowd (10)
          - family and friends (10)
          - friends of friends (10)
          - general public or press (10)
Pros of Crowdfunding
1. You can get support from anyone in the world (4)
2. No limits as to what amount of money can be raised (4)
3. Crowdfunding allows for the middleman to be cut out
and to be able to give the money right to the people who
have created the product (7)
4. Allows for supporters to have a closer connection with
the cause (7)
5. Allows for early feedback in the innovation process (3)
Cons of Crowdfunding
1. Takes up a lot of time and money (3)
2. You have to pay fees on the money
that was raised (4)
3. It is easy for other people to copy
your ideas if you have not copyrighted
them (4)
4. There is a lack of accountability (4)
5. Crowdfunding sites take a
percentage of the money you raised (6)
Conclusion
Crowdfunding is very helpful for small charities and causes
It can be hard to manage a successful
crowdfunding page,
but when done well, you can make lots of
money for your cause
