Public Health Schools in Action to Improve Community Health: The Flint Water ...Practical Playbook
Public health schools in Michigan are collaborating with communities to address the Flint water crisis. Studies by Dr. Mona demonstrated high lead levels in Flint's water. Universities are now offering free courses on the water crisis, creating a data repository, and facilitating workshops to aid recovery. A research team also recommended best practices for using point-of-use water filters beyond manufacturers' instructions. Universities have partnered with communities by distributing filters, screening for lead, and volunteering faculty and students.
The survey results from a company Christmas party showed that over 1200 people filled out the survey, a 43.6% increase from the previous year. Most respondents were between 41-55 years old. The survey found that the location's proximity to attendees' homes was a significant factor in attendance. Attendees rated the shuttle bus experience equally regardless of distance traveled. 70% of attendees rated this year's party an 8 or higher compared to previous years. Younger attendees favored snacks/candy and live music over meeting colleagues or executives. The majority of non-attendees cited transportation/shuttle issues as their reason for not attending. We also honored Taiowa Donovan, Robotics Director, from American Heritage School with the Community Recognition Award for innovative use of HPCC Systems in the community.
