EGYPT
History Brief
5000 years of civilization con-
tributed to the cultural heritage
of Egypt and to building the
strength and independence of its
citizens. The country’s history is
a sequence of invasions, eras or
glory, battles and victories.
Egypt has played an important
role through all of these eras,
and today one can find monu-
ments that evidence Egypt's role
in most of the world's historic
events, from the beginning of
mankind until the present.
Egypt is a land bustling with life, sound, visual
beauty and excitement. More than anything else,
we want you to think of Egypt as fun.
Dating back to 1958, the current flag
of the Arab Republic of Egypt is the
country’s symbol of independence.
The flag consists of three superposed
rectangles, black white and red, each
having a specific significance, and
bears at its centre a golden eagle, the
country’s emblem and a symbol of power.
Red has been chosen to symbolize glory, white is for purity, where-
as the black stripe evokes eras of underdevelopment and colonial-
ism that were overcome.
Religion
Islam is the official religion of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Most
non-Muslims in Egypt are Christians, the majority of whom belong
to the Coptic Orthodox Church.
Main Airports: Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Hurghada, and Sharm
El-Sheikh.
Geography
Egypt is the 29th biggest country in the world, covering a total
area of 1,002,450 sq. km. It is located in the northeast corner
of the African continent, on the Mediterranean Sea, at a
crossroad between Africa, Asia and Europe. It is bordered to
the east by the Red Sea, Palestine and Israel to the north-east,
Libya to the west, and Sudan to the south.
Population
The estimated total population of Egypt is about 90 million,
according to the 2015 population census. Most of the Egyp-
tian population is concentrated near the River Nile, in cities
and towns such as Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Port Said.
Language
Egypt’s official language is Arabic, but foreign languages, such
as English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish are also
widely spoken, especially in educated circles.

Alexandria
The second largest city in Egypt, known as "The
Pearl of the Mediterranean", has an atmosphere
that is more Mediterranean than Middle East-
ern ; its ambience and cultural heritage distance
it from the rest of the country.
Alexandria is a city to explore at random. It's as
important to enjoy the atmosphere as it is to see
the sights.
Attractive history
“In the early 20th century, it
was a great city, Alexandria was
fabulous. It was often compared
to Paris and London.”
-Alexandra Papadimitriou
The city was a vibe resonating
from its past. It’s present in
every step you take. It inspired
remarkable writers, started
with the great Cavafy, to EM
Forster, Lawrence Durrell and
many others. This is nostalgia.
Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Alexandria became the
capital of Graeco-Roman Egypt, its status as a beacon of culture sym-
bolized by Pharos, the legendary lighthouse that was one of the Seven
Wonders of the World. Alexandria was also the center of learning in
the ancient world. From the 19th century Alexandria took a new role,
as a focus for Egypt's commercial and maritime expansion.
The sunken city
Cleopatra’s Kingdom, Alexandria, Egypt Lost for
1,600 years, the royal quarters of Cleopatra were
discovered off the shores of Alexandria. A team of
marine archaeologists began excavating the ancient
city in 1998. Historians believe the site was sub-
merged by earthquakes and tidal waves, yet, aston-
ishingly, several artifacts remained largely intact.
climate
Alexandria has a temperate climate with the overall weather being very
mild. The weather is often extremely hot during the day time with tem-
peratures dipping to much cooler levels at night.
Summer
In contrast to the winter, the sum-
mer is fairly dry and arid with some
humidity though the cooling sea
breezes from the Mediterranean Sea
can provide some relief from this.
The average temperature high dur-
ing the summer months is around
30 degrees Celsius with the average
low during the night being around
21 degrees Celsius.
Winter
The average daily temperature
high is around 20 degrees Celsius
during the winter months in Al-
exandria with temperatures
dropping to an average low of
around 10 degrees Celsius during
the nights. Compared to other
areas of Egypt the rainfall is quite
high in Alexandria.
So the Sea is the main character in our story, it’s the
thing you will find most delightful in this city. It’s gives
you an amazing scenery, a wonderful breeze you could
also enjoy a swim or a boat ride if the weather is good.
A 19km coastline -or El Corniche– as the locals call it-
gave the city its beauty, it starts east from ‘El Montazah
Palace’ once a summer getaway for the King which you
should give a visit to get a taste of royalty and enjoy its
spacious gardens, and it ends west at the ‘Qaitbay Cas-
tle’ a huge fortress once built to protect the city against
invaders.
If you are not a beach person, don’t worry, because there
are a lot of other things to do in Alexandria.
Culture & spirit
There is no such thing as a unified “Egyptian Culture,” for the simple reason
that Egyptians form a multicultural society, where modernity and western
customs flirt with traditions, and where religious practices are moderate,
but where religion is still deeply anchored in the everyday life of the Egyp-
tians…
However, Egyptians from all social strata, religious beliefs, or ethnic origins
share a remarkable attachment to important social values, such as:
 Family: Egyptians consider their family as an integral entity which they
have to protect. Don’t be surprised to notice that an Egyptian feels re-
sponsible for his whole family and the behavior of his siblings, his par-
ents, etc..
 Friendliness and Humor: Egyptians are known to be the funniest,
friendliest and most helpful nation of the Middle East. They will go out
of their way to help you in any troublesome situation, always with a
smile. If you’re sensitive to their humor, which is renowned world-
wide, you’ll be surprised to see how far a smile or a joke can take you in
Egypt.
 Sports: The most famous sport in the country is football. Egyptians
love to play and watch football. The most popular national football
clubs are Ahly and Zamalek.
 Folkloric Dances: Egypt is famous for its au-
thentic and beautiful heritage of customs and tra-
ditions.

To begin with, you should give a
visit to the ‘Bibliotheca Alexan-
drina‘ a huge library built in 2002
with a unique design to reincarnate
the ancient library that used to sit
in the same place and lead the
world into many scientific break-
throughs. And even if you are not a
bookworm you will be amazed by
its wonderful architecture.
Al-Montazah Gardens
The eccentrically-designed Montazah
Palace with its ornate Florentine-
inspired towers and Rococo flourishes
is not open to the public, but everyone
is welcome to stroll within the sprawl-
ing gardens, which can be a welcome
slice of nature after a day spent within
Alexandria's hustle. On the coastal end
of the park is a small beach with a pe-
culiarly whimsical bridge to a small
island.
Roman Theater at Alexandria
Over 30 years of excavation have uncovered many
Roman remains including this well-preserved the-
atre with galleries, sections of mosaic-flooring,
Fort Qaitbey
This squat and dinky fort
has been standing guard
over Alexandria's eastern
harbor since 1480. The
Pharos itself said adieu to Alexandria in 1303 when it was toppled by a vio-
lent earthquake. Inside, you can explore the series of stone-walled cham-
bers and climb up to the roof to look out over the Mediterranean.
Alexandria's National Museum
is a must-stop if you want to get to
grips with the vast history of this
famed city. Inside, the collection
guides you from the Pharaonic era (in
the basement), to the Hellenistic hey-
day.
Ras El-Tin Palace
Sumptuous Ras el-Tin Pal-
ace was once a summer escape for
Egypt's sultans when the desert
heat of Cairo got too much to
bear. The monumental white fa-
cade, best seen from the harbor wa-
ters, is a must-see.
Corniche
Downtown Alexandria's wide waterfront road is as much a symbol of
the city as any of its monuments. It's here that you get a real feel for
the era of cosmopolitan elegance and decadence that marked this
city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Much of the architec-
ture from this era still stands along the Corniche.
During your stroll check out the colonial remnants of the Cecil Ho-
tel and Windsor Palace Hotel that are still the key harbor-side
addresses for visitors who want to wallow in bygone-days ambience.

Attractive history “In theearly 20th century, it was a great city, Alexandria was fabulous. It was often compared to Paris and London.” -Alexandra Papadimitriou The city was a vibe resonating from its past. It’s present in every step you take. It inspired remarkable writers, started with the great Cavafy, to EM Forster, Lawrence Durrell and many others. This is nostalgia. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Alexandria became the capital of Graeco-Roman Egypt, its status as a beacon of culture sym- bolized by Pharos, the legendary lighthouse that was one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Alexandria was also the center of learning in the ancient world. From the 19th century Alexandria took a new role, as a focus for Egypt's commercial and maritime expansion. The sunken city Cleopatra’s Kingdom, Alexandria, Egypt Lost for 1,600 years, the royal quarters of Cleopatra were discovered off the shores of Alexandria. A team of marine archaeologists began excavating the ancient city in 1998. Historians believe the site was sub- merged by earthquakes and tidal waves, yet, aston- ishingly, several artifacts remained largely intact.

So the Seais the main character in our story, it’s the thing you will find most delightful in this city. It’s gives you an amazing scenery, a wonderful breeze you could also enjoy a swim or a boat ride if the weather is good. A 19km coastline -or El Corniche– as the locals call it- gave the city its beauty, it starts east from ‘El Montazah Palace’ once a summer getaway for the King which you should give a visit to get a taste of royalty and enjoy its spacious gardens, and it ends west at the ‘Qaitbay Cas- tle’ a huge fortress once built to protect the city against invaders. If you are not a beach person, don’t worry, because there are a lot of other things to do in Alexandria.

Culture & spirit Thereis no such thing as a unified “Egyptian Culture,” for the simple reason that Egyptians form a multicultural society, where modernity and western customs flirt with traditions, and where religious practices are moderate, but where religion is still deeply anchored in the everyday life of the Egyp- tians… However, Egyptians from all social strata, religious beliefs, or ethnic origins share a remarkable attachment to important social values, such as:  Family: Egyptians consider their family as an integral entity which they have to protect. Don’t be surprised to notice that an Egyptian feels re- sponsible for his whole family and the behavior of his siblings, his par- ents, etc..  Friendliness and Humor: Egyptians are known to be the funniest, friendliest and most helpful nation of the Middle East. They will go out of their way to help you in any troublesome situation, always with a smile. If you’re sensitive to their humor, which is renowned world- wide, you’ll be surprised to see how far a smile or a joke can take you in Egypt.  Sports: The most famous sport in the country is football. Egyptians love to play and watch football. The most popular national football clubs are Ahly and Zamalek.  Folkloric Dances: Egypt is famous for its au- thentic and beautiful heritage of customs and tra- ditions.
