In my last lecture, I discussed the development of Greek civilization in the Greek peninsula. In
this lecture, we're going to discuss the expansion of Greek culture throughout the Mediterranean
and beyond. This expanded Greek culture created what is known as Hellenistic civilization. Just
a quick review-- in my last lecture, I explained that Greek civilization started with the Minoan
civilization, then developed into the Mycenaean civilization. The Greeks experienced a dark age
during which everyone was fighting with each other and laying claim to territory that evolved
into independent city-states. And after this, Greek civilization saw two ages-- an archaic age, and
a classical age. These ages are Athens formed a democracy and Sparta formed an oligarchy. This
was also when the Greeks fought the Persians and won and then turned to fight each other in the
Peloponnesian War.
[SLIDE] During the archaic and classical ages, which took place between 750 and 338 BCE,
large numbers of Greeks from different city-states left their homeland to settle in distant lands. In
that, so many Greek communities were established in southern Italy that the Romans later called
this area "Magna Graecia" or "Great Greece" because so many Greeks lived there. [SLIDE]
Greek settlements were also established in southern France, eastern Spain, and Egypt, and west
of Egypt, throughout Northern Africa. And in the east, the Greeks settled along the shores of the
Black Sea in what is today, Turkey. On the map on your screen, the green shading represents the
Greek colonies in the east and the west. The Greeks settled in other lands, primarily to make
money through trade. The Greeks traded their pottery, wine, and olive oil for the resources in
these new areas. They obtained grain, metals, fish, timber, wheat, and slaves. Wherever the
Greeks went, they took their culture. But even though the Greeks introduced their culture to a lot
of different people in the archaic and classical ages, this was nothing in comparison to what
would happen in the fourth century BCE. Beginning in the 300s BCE, new rulers built the
biggest empire the world had seen up to this point. And they carried Greek culture to the far
reaches of the Earth. In doing so, they established a new civilization-- the Hellenistic civilization.
This civilization existed from 323 BCE to 31 BCE.
[SLIDE] So our questions for this lecture are, who were the Macedonians? And how did they
conquer the Greeks and other civilizations? How did Macedonian rulers spread Greek culture in
the Hellenistic world? And how did the development of Hellenistic civilization impact Greek
culture?

Alexander the Great was one of the greatest generals because of his ability as a technician and troop leader. He was viewed as a brave and generous man by many, but he also had his evil side when he had to be, especially when it came to politics.
Alexander the Great wasn’t only known for his heroics in battle, he was known for his intellect. He was never satisfied with his surroundings, he always wanted more. He had a passion for knowledge and was willing to go out and find it. Alexander was never one sit still; with passion and energy his impulse was always to win and to expand his own horizon to the fullest.
Out of all the kings, rulers or emperors, Alexander III of Macedonia deserves to be called “The Great” because he was the closest to conquering the known world and gave history a new direction. His conquest of the Middle East and Asia helped spread Hellenism immediately through these regions. All rulers have good and bad about them but Alexander’s good outweighed the bad. His great character and values were two of the things that made Alexander the Great a well-known individual in history.

Lectures deal with invasion of Alexander the Great and the beginning of the Greek Occupation under the Ptolemy's.Hellenistic greece
Alexander the Great conquered much of the known world and spread Greek culture east. After his death, his empire broke into four kingdoms that continued spreading Hellenistic influence. This era saw advances in science, philosophy, art, and architecture produced throughout the Greek-influenced regions. Key figures included Alexander, who expanded the Macedonian empire vastly; Archimedes, an influential scientist and inventor; and philosophers like Epicurus and Zeno, who established major schools of thought.

In my last lecture, I discussed the development of Greek civilization in the Greek peninsula. In
this lecture, we're going to discuss the expansion of Greek culture throughout the Mediterranean
and beyond. This expanded Greek culture created what is known as Hellenistic civilization. Just
a quick review-- in my last lecture, I explained that Greek civilization started with the Minoan
civilization, then developed into the Mycenaean civilization. The Greeks experienced a dark age
during which everyone was fighting with each other and laying claim to territory that evolved
into independent city-states. And after this, Greek civilization saw two ages-- an archaic age, and
a classical age. These ages are Athens formed a democracy and Sparta formed an oligarchy. This
was also when the Greeks fought the Persians and won and then turned to fight each other in the
Peloponnesian War.
[SLIDE] During the archaic and classical ages, which took place between 750 and 338 BCE,
large numbers of Greeks from different city-states left their homeland to settle in distant lands. In
that, so many Greek communities were established in southern Italy that the Romans later called
this area "Magna Graecia" or "Great Greece" because so many Greeks lived there. [SLIDE]
Greek settlements were also established in southern France, eastern Spain, and Egypt, and west
of Egypt, throughout Northern Africa. And in the east, the Greeks settled along the shores of the
Black Sea in what is today, Turkey. On the map on your screen, the green shading represents the
Greek colonies in the east and the west. The Greeks settled in other lands, primarily to make
money through trade. The Greeks traded their pottery, wine, and olive oil for the resources in
these new areas. They obtained grain, metals, fish, timber, wheat, and slaves. Wherever the
Greeks went, they took their culture. But even though the Greeks introduced their culture to a lot
of different people in the archaic and classical ages, this was nothing in comparison to what
would happen in the fourth century BCE. Beginning in the 300s BCE, new rulers built the
biggest empire the world had seen up to this point. And they carried Greek culture to the far
reaches of the Earth. In doing so, they established a new civilization-- the Hellenistic civilization.
This civilization existed from 323 BCE to 31 BCE.
[SLIDE] So our questions for this lecture are, who were the Macedonians? And how did they
conquer the Greeks and other civilizations? How did Macedonian rulers spread Greek culture in
the Hellenistic world? And how did the development of Hellenistic civilization impact Greek
culture?
[SLIDE] In 338 BCE, independent Greek civilization came to an end. And that year, a man
named Philip II of Macedonia invaded the Greek city-states with his armies and conquered the
entire Greek peninsula. Let's stop for just a moment and look at the development of Macedonian

Alexander the Great was one of the greatest generals because of his ability as a technician and troop leader. He was viewed as a brave and generous man by many, but he also had his evil side when he had to be, especially when it came to politics.
Alexander the Great wasn’t only known for his heroics in battle, he was known for his intellect. He was never satisfied with his surroundings, he always wanted more. He had a passion for knowledge and was willing to go out and find it. Alexander was never one sit still; with passion and energy his impulse was always to win and to expand his own horizon to the fullest.
Out of all the kings, rulers or emperors, Alexander III of Macedonia deserves to be called “The Great” because he was the closest to conquering the known world and gave history a new direction. His conquest of the Middle East and Asia helped spread Hellenism immediately through these regions. All rulers have good and bad about them but Alexander’s good outweighed the bad. His great character and values were two of the things that made Alexander the Great a well-known individual in history.

-Alexander did defeat the Persian Empire. He then went south and conquered Egypt. When he arrived in Egypt he looked upon the pyramids and wept—“for there were no more worlds to conquer". However, he later left Egypt and headed East. He got as far as present day India winning battle after battle. The main reason that Alexander is called "the Great" was because he brought change—he introduced Hellenistic thinking to the rest of the world. By doing this he invented Western Civilization. In his conquest he spread the ideas of Aristotle, Euclid and Thales. One of the cities he founded was Alexandria. Wasn't there a famous library there? Is it still there? The list you provided are men only from the East. Alexander was from the West. Who in the West has been identified as "the Great"?

Alexander the Great - a quick overview
Olympias was the fourth wife of King Philip II of Macedon and mother of Alexander the Great. She was a member of a snake-worshipping cult and had a stormy relationship with Philip due to his infidelity. When Philip married Cleopatra, tensions increased and some believe Olympias organized Philip's murder in 337 BC.

Phillip II of Macedonia advised his son Alexander that the kingdom he would leave him would be too small. Alexander went on to become one of the greatest military leaders, conquering the Persian Empire and spreading Greek culture and ideas across Asia and into India. However, his troops grew weary of battle and refused to follow him further into India. Alexander the Great died of fever in Babylon at a young age, leaving his vast empire to be divided among his generals into four kingdoms.
Empires
Alexander the Great created one of the largest empires in ancient history by his early 30s, conquering vast regions of Europe and Asia and bringing Greek culture with him. Though he had help from his father in transforming Macedonia into a powerful Greek state, Alexander faced mutiny in his later years and his empire did not long outlive him, eventually being overrun by the Roman Empire. However, he was seen for centuries as the greatest conqueror and empire builder in history due to his unparalleled successes and visionary ambitions.

- 1. Alexander the Great Key Terms • Philip II • Phalanx • Alexander the Great • Hellenistic The Big Idea: Alexander the Great built a huge empire and helped spread Greek culture into Egypt and Asia.
- 2. Macedonia to the North • Greece underestimated Macedonia. • Philip II, Macedonia’s new king, began to plan his attack on Greece. • Athenian leaders knew they would be attacked but couldn’t rally troops. Macedonia attacked and defeated Greece. Philip II was adopted as Greece’s leader. The Greeks thought the Macedonians were barbarians.

Philip’s Military Strength • Philip was an awesome military leader. • He is famous for perfecting the phalanx. • A phalanx was a group of warriors who stood close together in a square, each with a spear. • As soldiers were killed, another would step forward. After tackling Greece, Philip II looked to conquer Persia. Unfortunately, he was murdered, passing his throne to his son, Alexander. Philip’s spears were 16 feet long.

Alexander Gets Angry • After Philip died, Thebes, another Greek city, rebelled against Alexander. • Alexander made an example of Thebes by destroying the city and enslaving its people. • Confident nobody else would rebel, Alexander began to build an empire. Alexander was only 20 when he took power. Alexander earned the name Alexander the Great when he became one of the greatest conquerors in history.

Building an Empire • Alexander started by invading Persia, winning over and over. • Then, he went into Egypt and was immediately crowned a pharaoh without a fight. • Alexander then defeated Persia once and for all after the king fled, making him the ruler. How do you think historians know this is a picture of Alexander the Great?

Alexander’s Death • Alexander wanted to continue building his empire, but his army refused to go on. • On his way home, Alexander got sick in Babylon. • He died at 33 and was taken to Egypt to be buried in a golden coffin. Nobody knows how Alexander died, but some say he was poisoned. Others say it was malaria.
- 8. Greek Culture Spreads • Alexander’s empire was the biggest ever. • He founded cities in the lands he conquered and named many Alexandria. • He modeled many cities after Greece with temples and theaters. Alexander encouraged Greeks to move to the new cities. Greek language, art, literature, and science spread around Alex’s empire.
- 9. Greek Culture Spreads • Alexander also encouraged his new people to keep their cultures. • This mixed Greek culture with the original cultures. • These new cultures were called Hellenistic, or Greek like. Hellenistic combined Persian, Egyptian, Syrian, and other cultures with Greek ideas. Alexander’s empire was a melting pot of cultures!
- 10. Hellenistic Kingdoms • When Alexander died, he did not have an obvious heir. • Three generals ended up fighting for and winning power. • One became king of Macedonia, another of Egypt, and the third of Greece.
- 11. The new Syria had too many different cultures and differing ideas to survive. They were also defeated by Romans. The new Egypt developed a center of culture and learning.
