This document summarizes a research study that tested the efficacy of baclofen, including high doses, for treating alcohol dependence in adults. The randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 56 participants found that those in the baclofen group had higher rates of abstinence and longer periods of cumulative abstinence compared to the placebo group. While the small sample size and difficulty blinding high dose baclofen limit recommendations for widespread use, the results suggest baclofen deserves further study as a potential treatment for alcohol dependence.
