A study found that women who binge drank early in pregnancy had a 56% higher risk of stillbirth. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause fetal alcohol spectrum disorders with effects ranging from mild to severe, including mental retardation, learning and behavioral issues, and defects of internal organs. The most severe manifestation is fetal alcohol syndrome, which involves physical and mental birth defects. Stopping alcohol use after chronic ingestion can lead to withdrawal syndrome with symptoms from fever and insomnia to potentially death from delirium tremens, so treatment is recommended for those looking to quit chronic drinking.
