Albert Einstein was born in Germany in 1879 and showed an early interest in science after being impressed by a compass as a child. He developed his Special Theory of Relativity in 1905 while working as a patent clerk, which established that the laws of physics are the same in all frames of reference moving at a constant speed. This theory disrupted Newtonian concepts of space and time and introduced mass-energy equivalence with the iconic E=mc2 equation. Einstein subsequently developed his general theory of relativity and made numerous other significant contributions to physics, while also escaping Nazi Germany in the 1930s and settling in the United States.
