Hiking Powerline Pass – at the Glen Alps trailhead
Looking towards Denali and the city
Moose-spotting
My cousin Elizabeth counts at eight bull moose and one female. Powerline Pass is a superb location to spot moose mating rituals during the autumn months.
The female munches while a bull moose naps
A very brave (or foolish?) photographer catches the action as the bull moose begin to approach each other to challenge for the female.
Two bull moose (on left) engage in the ritual of “rutting”, in which they tangle up their antlers in a power struggle for the right to approach the female.
A frosty mid-day hike – temperatures were in the 40’s Fahrenheit in the sun; colder in the shade.
Driving into the city

Beluga Point
Elizabeth looks in vain for beluga whales
A glacier
A “ghost forest” – one of many along the highway killed by the devastating 1964 earthquake. Tsunami waves triggered by tremors washed away buildings and salt water killed the trees.
A house destroyed by the tsunamis of the 1964 earthquake.
Another “ghost forest”
