Process control engineers and operators are drafting a global alarm management guideline to rationalize alarms across sites according to best practices. Currently, around 80% of alarms are prioritized as high, which is problematic. The guideline aims to audit alarms over a three year cycle to reduce the number of alarms, prioritize them appropriately, and define response procedures to address abnormal conditions and prevent major incidents. The goal is to improve operator mastery and increase safety and productivity by managing alarms more effectively.
