Social Networks and the Globalised World —
Globalization and Technology
Globalization, in its current definition by social theorists, refers to fundamental changes in
the spatial and temporal contours of social existence (Scheuerman, 2010). The term
‘globalization’ was most commonly used when discussing global market trends, but is now
widely used to explain the rapid expansion of information and global connectedness. The
definition of technology in a globalized world is ever-changing. It is conceived as a tool,
technique or method that serves a purpose or solves a problem. It isn’t just a computer or
the Internet, it can be the way in which we function. According to John Dewey, the mean-
ing of technology is determined by how we use it (Hickman, 1992). Everyday we are
using some form of technology that directly and indirectly connects us with another person
in another part of the world.
It is clear that with Internet access and participation in social networking sites, our current
social being in the age of globalization, is no longer limited by locality; it has become a
global existence. Due to social media advancements in technology and social networking,
voices are being heard around the world, everyone can be an author and originality is now
a grey area. Social networking is now becoming a large part of how students learn and
become aware of global issues; whether they are fully accurate or not. In order for
students to be informed and knowledgeable about global issues in the age of globalization
and rapid technological growth, the value of being part of a social/ educational network is
imperative.
In the spring of 2011, the world discovered just how powerful social networking can be
with the organized demonstrations in the Middle East. The youth of the Middle East
connected using social networks, and educated the world on the current issues and prac-
tices that were happening in their region.
The media exalted their triumphs and the value of the Internet as a tool for social change
impacted the world. The concept of networking (the exchange of information or services
among individuals, groups or institutions) as an educational tool is not limited to social
networks. By seizing collaborative opportunities and using learning networks, students and
teachers gain a better understanding of the world around them through technology and the
Internet. They can become knowledgeable global citizens via the global village.

Conference and 33rd Board Meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 4-6 December 2012. The theme of the conference was ”Unlocking the
Wealth of Universities: Academic Entrepreneurship”
AUAP was formally established with the signing of the memorandum of agreement and the
holding of the founding conference on 28 July 1995 at Suranaree University of Technology
(SUT), Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
There were 48 University, Vice Chancellors and Rectors from 17 Countries who were
signatories to the Constitution. Prof. Dr. Wichit Srisa-an, the SUT Rector, was unanimously
elected AUAP Founding President
At Present, AUAP has about 250 members from 19 countries and territories as well as two
associate members (consisting of regional organizations based in Philippines).
The Founding Secretary-General, Dr.
Ruben C. Umaly, wa s u n a n i mo u s l y
reappointed to serve the Board and its
diverse member institutions.
Speaking as host of the conference, the
new AUAP Presi- dent Prof. Tan Sri
Dato’ Wira Dr. Shaarifah Hapsah Syed
Hasan Sha- habudin, Vice Chancel-
lor of the National University of Malaysia (UKM) remarked that
“Universities in recent years have created new firms as vehicle to exploit research results, mainly stimulated by
changed societal external expectations for economic development and pressures to generate new sources of income”
In his speech the outgoing AUAP President, Prof. Dr. Prasart Suebka, the 10th President AUAP and Rector,
Suranaree University of Technology (SUT), Thailand said “The coming year of 2015 marks a very important
milestone for all ASEAN countries in that we shall be integrated to become one single community. The integration
will pose a big challenge and of course a valuable opportunity for AUAP”
The conference keynote speaker Prof. Anne Glover (pictured top right) Chair of Molecular and Cell Biology
Institute of Medical Sciences, Univer- sity of Aberdeen and European Commission
President’s Chief Scientific Adviser warned that “If we are to be successful in meeting the
demands of the 21st century living, we need to identify new methods to clear blockages

will never be the same again. It will be
able to deliver a deathblow on global
poverty. Many business wizards and successful business
personalities will apply their abilities to this new challenge - the
challenge of creating a poverty free world within a short time”
Prof. Dr. Gyonggu SHIN, Dean and Vice President for Interna-
tional Affairs, Chonnam National University, South Korea
claimed that “Universities need to be keen to promote love of
both academic and applied knowledge. Otherwise we will end
up producing students competing for the sake of personal or corporate interest without much concern on the future
of human existence in this age of environmental disaster” and in his own presentation Prof. Martand Tamanacharya Telsang, Dean Academic,
Rajarambapu Institute of Technology, Islampur, India, said “Entrepreneurship and innovation are increasingly recognised as important drivers
of economic growth. Embedding entrepreneurship in education and providing greater access are important steps for building an innovative
culture and creating entrepreneurship venture.”

MDGs Beyond 2015.
Can the UN get it right this time!
On 5th April, the UN and partners worldwide observed the 1,000-day mark to the 2015
target date for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The MDGs are the most successful ‘Global Anti-Poverty PUSH’ in history.
Governments, international organizations and civil society groups around the world
have helped to cut in half the world’s extreme poverty rate.
More girls are in school. Fewer children are dying. The world continues to fight killer
diseases, such as malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS.
There are 1,000 days to accelerate action on issues such as hunger, access to
education, improved sanitation, maternal health and gender equality.
Get involved and help build on the MDG momentum!
In July 2012, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the 27 members of a High-level Panel to advise on the global
development framework beyond 2015, the target date for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Committed to an open,
transparent, and inclusive process, the secretary general’s high level panel of eminent persons on the post-2015 development
agenda met in London on the 1st of November, in Monrovia in January 2013 and finally in March in Bali, Indonesia where they
deliberated on building a global partnership and the means of implementation for the most desired, applicable developmental
agenda. Eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – ranging from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/
AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015 – form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s
countries and leading international development institutions in September 2000.

FAO helps Darfur farmers and herders live in peace
Although farmers and herders in North Darfur, Sudan often
fight over scarce resources, an agreement brokered by the Food
and Agriculture Organization (FAO) means peace has come.
Instead of letting their livestock graze in farmers’ fields,
herders have agreed not to move their animals into the farming
area until after the harvest.
About 2500 farm households have just reaped a record 600
tonnes of grain. Now phase two of the project will help them
become better farmers. This noble intervention from FAO
is highly commendable.

Friday 3rd of May kicks off the Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month, a festivity celebrated across the United States of America.
A rather broad term, Asian-Pacific encompasses all of the Asian continent and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia,
Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated
States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu,
Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).
Like most commemorative months, Asian-Pacific Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill. In June 1977, Reps. Frank Horton of New
York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the president to proclaim the first ten days of May as
Asian-Pacific Heritage Week. The following month, senators Daniel Inouye and Spark Matsunaga introduced a similar bill in the Senate.
Both were passed. On October 5, 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a Joint Resolution designating the annual celebration.
Twelve years later, President George H.W. Bush signed an extension making the week-long celebration into a month-long
festivity. In 1992, the official designation of May as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month was signed into law.
The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and
to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The majority of the workers who
laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants.
