CAREER DETAILS.
2014 –present day : Thermo Fisher Scientific (ex Life Technologies)
Member of a small team running biochemical screens (FRET/Binding) for global pharma in
an ISO 9001:2008 accredited laboratory. Due to the small number of personnel involved in
all aspects of the laboratory: production/screening & planning, data analysis, training &
documentation, stock management, receiving customer compounds and subsequent
management and usage on the ECHO550.
Achievements: in a very high paced laboratory, rapidly became competent in screening
methodologies and production planning. Brought back into usage 96-channel pipette
(Nanoscreen Multimek™) – learning how to program & set-up, training and ISO
documentation
1996 - 2012: AstraZeneca plc. - Research Bioscientist
My main role was technical and scientific support for the secondary screening and HTS operations for
oncology and inflammation projects ensuring delivery of high quality reliable screening data for cell
based and biochemical small molecule compound screens. I ran screens utilising many assay
technologies whilst running the departmental flow cytometry laboratory. Experienced with many assay
formats – ELISA, Biochemical (fluorescent/luminescent/colourimetric), radiochemical, high content
screening with specific support for Flow Cytometry, Luminex, FMAT8200, FLIPR, mammalian cell
culture and laboratory automation. I was also a member of a core team of scientists generating data for
core screening activities and preparation/solubilisation of compounds using automated liquid handling
systems (TecanEVO, Tecan Genesis, Hamilton and BioMek robots as well as PlateMate Plus &
Agiilent systems).
Main Responsibilities included (but not limited to)
 Optimisation of in-vitro biological assays for automated (robotic) liquid handling systems
o Including development of novel programming solutions
o Selection of appropriate technology/ liquid handling solutions to deliver the HTS
effectively
 Cell culture and provision of cells to selected cell-based assays
o Performed day to day maintenance of mammalian cell lines
 Performing HTS primary screens [on >1 million compounds]
o including compound & reagent supply and/or procurement
 close liaison with compound management to ensure correct supply and format of
assay ready plates
o data analysis and reporting of data
o writing scientific reports to support conclusions
 supported secondary screening activities
o cell based (FLIPR/FMAT/Flow Cytometry) and biochemical (FRET) assays
o supported automated liquid handling equipment as a member of a core screening
facility
 ‘Super-User’ for selected automated systems and ancillary equipment
o Including Biocell/Agilent robotic systems, BioRaptr dispensers
o Bespoke plate-based washer/dispenser automated assay systems
 Expert user for Flow Cytometry & FLIPR
 Provided internal and external service for cell sorting using Becton Dickinson cell
sorters ; Operated FACSCan, FACSCalibur, LSR2 and FACSVantage
cytometers
o Support for experimental design and also presentation and interpretation of data
o Maintained an awareness of the scientific literature and commercial press
o Experienced in many aspects of flow Cytometry – immunophenotyping, multiplexing,
DNA (ploidy) analysis, rare event counting & cell sorting
 Ran radiochemical membrane binding assays for the departmental HERG screening
 Experienced user of ArrayScan technology
 Departmental risk and COSHH assessor & Local Laboratory safety coordinator
Main achievements
Nominated person for several departmental technologies.
 Introduced systems to ensure correct operation of small volume dispensers : Instigated a
regular regime of cleaning and calibration that otherwise would have been ad-hoc
 For 10years managed flow Cytometry laboratory maintaining 3 flow cytometers for use of the
research department and providing support for both internal and external customers
o Introduced networking capabilities for flow Cytometry, plate based (HTS) sampling and
new software
o Trained scientists to use new systems and perform data analysis
o Negotiated exchange of old equipment to extend capabilities –e.g. new red lasers.
o Presented successful case to management for expansion of facilities
 i.e HTS processing, replacement of FACSCan with FACSCalibur and BD LSR
o assisted flow cytometer operators in an external affiliated laboratory to set-up ad operate
their flow cytometers
o Assisted in the preparation for the Becton Dickinson user meeting at Zeneca
 Primary user of the FLIPR
o Increased effectiveness and efficiency of FLIPR usage through optimisation and
standardisation of assays with consultation with fellow scientists
o In consultation with other users updated FLIPR 384MTP format after presenting
extensive test results
o completed intensive FLIPR screen with positive recognition (gift) from higher
management
 Brought in impedance based technology (CellKey) for departmental testing
 Collaborated inter-departmentally to test new SPR systems (SRUBIND)
o Collaborated with SRU to optimise non-adherent cell assays
o Asked to present at SBS/ELRIG
 Extended support to Luminx100 (BioPlex) and FMAT8200 systems when introduced
Performed risk assessments for all laboratory equipment making the department compliant with new
interpretation of HSE regulations utilising AstraZeneca cross departmental templates
1993 to 1996 – Assistant Research Bioscientist - ZENECA
Compound screening for Bioscience projects, performing ex-vivo (isolated tissue) safety pharmacology
Responsibilities included:

Learned several new techniques in rapid succession and interpretation of pharmocological data
Brought in new technology to update outmoded technology – replaced with digital recording system.
Quickly learned to operate flow cytometers and interpret complex multi-parametric biological data
1986 to 1993 – Assistant Research Bioscientist – ICI
I held a primarily technical role in the Bio-Electronics Unit. That was a dedicated small
group providing novel solutions for monitoring, recording and processing biological data,
primarily for the cardiovascular laboratories.
Responsibilities included:
 Calibration, repair, maintenance and training for externally sourced and in-house produced
laboratory electronic equipment.
 Design and manufacturing novel bespoke small electronic modules (signal processing units) and
ancillary items (e.g. miniature electrodes, interfaces) for use in cardiovascular laboratories.
 Using CAD software, PCB design and manufacture
 On-demand and in-situ laboratory equipment fault-finding & repair.
 Support for the in-house designed physiological telemetry system and acoustic Doppler flow
