Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

AIT’S 128TH GRADUATION

wo-hundred-and-six students from 22 countries
graduated from the Asian Institute of Technology
on 14 December 2017. Graduating students hailed
from Asia, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean. Thailand
and Myanmar with 50 students each provided the
maximum number of students in this batch. They were
closely followed by India (30), Vietnam (28), Sri Lanka
(14),Nepal(9),Bangladesh(4),Indonesia(3),Afghanistan,
Fiji, Lao PDR and People’s Republic of China (2 each),
and Bhutan, Cambodia, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong,
Jamaica, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and the Philippines
(1 each).
The graduation speaker was Ambassador of Bangladesh
to Thailand H.E. Saida Muna Tasneem, who exhorted stu-
dents to make a difference in this world and bring down
artificial barriers. Asking them to be like Nobel laureate
Malala Yousafzai, the Ambassador exhorted students to
remain steadfast in maintaining human values and engage
in humanitarian work.
The outstanding alumnus address was delivered by Dr.
Veerapong Chaiperm, Governor of Industrial Estate Au-
thority of Thailand (IEAT).

Experts Stress the Importance of Mainstreaming Disaster Risk
Reduction in Education
Delegation at Mainstreaming Resilience and
Disaster Risk Reduction in Education.
Disasters, risk, and resilience need to be brought into curriculum at
various levels of education, and different disciplines should integrated
within the education system. This was the dominant theme of the
two-day conference on “Mainstreaming Resilience and Disaster Risk
Reduction in Education” organized atAIT on 1-2 December 2017.
The opening remarks were delivered by Mr. Bernard Philip, Deputy
Head of Mission, Embassy of Australia, and Prof. Pennung Warnitchai
of AIT. Keynote addresses were delivered by Mr. Sanjay Srivastava
of UNESCAP, Prof. Iyyanki Murali Krishna of Defence Research and
Development Organisation (DRDO), and Dr. Gajendran Thayapan of
University of Newcastle.
An overview of Disaster Resilience Education Capacity Building in
South-East Asia (DRECB) was provided by Dr. Jason von Meding of
AIT has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bhutan
Power Corporation Limited (BPC) to support BPC employees
to earn a Master’s degree at AIT. The MoU was signed on 11
December 2017 by BPC Managing Director Mr. Gem Tshering and
AIT President Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai. According to the
agreement, BPC will send five staff members every year for a period
of five years for studying at AIT. The Managing Director of BPC,
Mr. Gem Tshering is an alumnus ofAIT (Master’s in Energy, 1994).

AIT will launch an international double degree master’s program in
Wireless Communications Engineering with the University of Oulu
(UOulu),Finland.Theagreementtolaunchtheprogramwasfinalized
during the visit of Ms. Hanna Saarela, Development Manager, Centre
for Wireless Communications, University of Oulu, Finland, during
her visit toAIT on 19 December 2017.
The cooperation agreement betweenAIT and UOulu has been signed
by Dr. Helka-Liisa Hentila, Vice-Rector of UOulu and Prof. Worsak
Kanok-Nukulchai, President AIT. According to the agreement,
both universities will award a Master in Science to candidates who
successfully complete the program.

A new book on “Climate Events and Disaster Mitigation - from Policy
to Practice,” co-edited by AIT’s Prof. Jayant Kumar Routray has been
released by the Centre for Science and Technology of Non-Aligned and
other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre).
Jointly edited by Prof. Alejandro Linayo Rivero of the Research Center
On Disaster Risk Reduction in Venezuela, Prof. Jayant Kumar Routray
of AIT, and Prof. Biswajeet Pradhan of University Putra Malaysia, the
book includes 17 scientific and technical papers contributed by experts
from 15 countries. The publication follows the holding of a workshop
by the NAM S&T Centre in partnership with the National Science and
Technology Commission (NATSEC) of Sri Lanka in Colombo, Sri
Lanka, in March 2017.

Management in Asia
A faculty member of AIT, Dr. Indrajit Pal, has co-
authored a book on “Natural Hazards Management in
Asia.” Published by Sage Publications, the book is a
study on how natural hazards convert into disasters.
“Focusing onAsian countries, it takes a holistic view of
the subject and discusses different concepts of disaster
management covering both theory and practice,”
Dr. Indrajit Pal says. “The book also explains best
practices and the most effective tools for alleviating
the consequences of such disasters,” he adds.

Dr. Salin joined AIT as an Assistant Professor
in August 2014. Prior to joining AIT, he was
holding the position of Assistant Professor
(Senior Scale) at Kerala University of Fisher-
ies and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), India (May
2011-July 2014).

Following the dictum of “think globally, act locally,” AIT is also
contributing towards the development of local and regional ca-
pacity.AMemorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by May-
or of Thaklong Municipality in Pathum Thani province, Mr. Thai
Thogprang, and AIT President Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai
on 22 December 2017 works towards this goal of local applica-
tion of internationally-tested technologies.
According to Dr. Thammarat Koottatep, the lead player fromAIT
on this partnership, AIT will development Faecal Sludge Man-
agement (FSM) systems in Thaklong Municipality. It will also
act as a center for promoting and supporting innovative technol-
ogy information for similar organizations in law and middle-in-
come countries to disseminate this technology. AIT falls under
the jurisdiction of Thaklong municipality.
