AIT hosts International Forum on
Sustainable Future in Asia
When the tallest statue of Lord Buddha
was being created in Thailand, the
Crown Property Bureau thought of one
organization to fall back on to check and
verify the stability of the structure — the
Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).
Thailand’s premier earthquake expert,
Prof. Pennung Warnitchai provided the
Structural Design Review of the statue
which was inaugurated in December 2015
by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha
Chakri Sirindhorn in Kanchanaburi.
“Itisthetalleststandingstatueconfiguration
in Thailand, and we were asked to review
the design to ensure that the structure has
the ability to withstand extreme wind and
ground shaking caused by earthquakes,”
Prof. Pennung says. Moreover, the
structure is unique since it is not in a sitting
position, which would have provided it
with stability. Instead, the standing pose has
the entire structure standing on two legs,
which raises serious design and stability
challenges. “AIT was chosen, since we
are not only an independent education
and research institute, but we also possess
the expertise, and we co-host (along with
Thammasat University) the largest wind
tunnel in Thailand,” he says. Prof. Pennung
is a recognized leader in this field, having
developed the design standards in Thailand
for both earthquakes and winds.

Gases (GHGs), and are increasingly becoming more vulnerable.
These were the remarks of Dr. Bindu Lohani, Senior Advisor to the
AIT President, and former Vice President of theAsian Development
Bank (ADB) while delivering the Distinguished Adjunct Faculty
(DAF) Seminar on “Technological Challenges and Opportunities in
Addressing Climate Resilience Smart Cities” at AIT on 26 January
2016.
“Cities have to be made more liveable, smart, clean and green,” Dr.
Lohani stressed, as he outlined the technological challenges being
faced in urban areas. He stated that 80 per cent of the global GDP is
generated in cities, and 600 cities collectively contribute 60 per cent
of the global GDP. Quoting from an ADB study, he added that 23
megacities (cities with a population of over 10 million people) are
currently contributing 14 per cent of GDP, though this is expected to
reduce to about 10 per cent by 2025.
ters away, the fact remains that we cannot see
what is happening a few centimetres below
the ground. Unless one is a geophysicist, the
mysteries of what happens “under the ground”
always remain an enigma.
Exploring this phenomenon was Mr. Koya
Suto, Director of Terra Australis Geophysica
and past president of the Australian Society
of Exploration Geophysicists at the Asian
Institute of Technology on 18 January 2016.
In Bangkok to attend the 7th International
Conference in Applied Geophysics, Mr. Koya
Suto delivered a talk at AIT and interacted
with students of Geotechnical and Earth Re-
sources Engineering.

  • 2. 2FEBRUARY 2016 RECENT NEWS / HAPPENINGS AT AIT From right: Prof. C Visvanathan, Ms. Janet Salem of UNEP, and Dr. Jonathan Shaw. AIT hosts International Forum on Sustainable Future in Asia When the tallest statue of Lord Buddha was being created in Thailand, the Crown Property Bureau thought of one organization to fall back on to check and verify the stability of the structure — the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). Thailand’s premier earthquake expert, Prof. Pennung Warnitchai provided the Structural Design Review of the statue which was inaugurated in December 2015 by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in Kanchanaburi. “Itisthetalleststandingstatueconfiguration in Thailand, and we were asked to review the design to ensure that the structure has the ability to withstand extreme wind and ground shaking caused by earthquakes,” Prof. Pennung says. Moreover, the structure is unique since it is not in a sitting position, which would have provided it with stability. Instead, the standing pose has the entire structure standing on two legs, which raises serious design and stability challenges. “AIT was chosen, since we are not only an independent education and research institute, but we also possess the expertise, and we co-host (along with Thammasat University) the largest wind tunnel in Thailand,” he says. Prof. Pennung is a recognized leader in this field, having developed the design standards in Thailand for both earthquakes and winds. Prof. Akimasa Sumi Thailand’s tallest Buddha statue has an AIT connection Amidst the backdrop of the adoption of Sustain- able Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Na- tions, and the signing of the ParisAgreement on Climate Change under the aegis of the United Nations Frame- work Convention on Cli- mate Change (UNFCCC), the Regional Resource Cen- tre for Asia and the Pacific (RRC.AP) at AIT organized a two-day “International Forum on Sustainable Future inAsia.” Co-hosted byAIT, National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) Japan, Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IRSSS) of the University of Tokyo, Japan, and theAlliance for Global SustainabilityAsia, the conference was attended by 160 participants. In his opening remarks, Prof. Akimasa Sumi, President, NIES stressed the importance of an international forum for convert- ing aspirations into actions. Prof. Kazuo Yamamoto, AIT’s Vice President for Resource Development delivered the welcome ad- dress on behalf of AIT. He stated that 80 per cent of the global GDP is generated in cities, and 600 cities collectively contribute 60 per cent of the global GDP. Quoting from an ADB study, he added that 23 megacities (cities with a population of over 10 million people) are currently contributing 14 per cent of GDP, though this is expected to reduce to about 10 per cent by 2025. ters away, the fact remains that we cannot see what is happening a few centimetres below the ground. Unless one is a geophysicist, the mysteries of what happens “under the ground” always remain an enigma. Exploring this phenomenon was Mr. Koya Suto, Director of Terra Australis Geophysica and past president of the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists at the Asian Institute of Technology on 18 January 2016. In Bangkok to attend the 7th International Conference in Applied Geophysics, Mr. Koya Suto delivered a talk at AIT and interacted with students of Geotechnical and Earth Re- sources Engineering.
