Our AIGA chapter has now established a shared purpose and three areas of focus to guide board activities. We’ve shifted our mindset from a club to a community, and transformed our chapter’s touchpoints, which now serve as symbols of our open, inclusive, and focused way of working together. We’ve also produced over 50 events focused on cultivating design ability, proving design impact, and uniting people.
A few weeks ago, our chapter presented our story to leaders from 65 other chapters, at the AIGA Leadership Retreat in Salt Lake City. Here are the slides.
Creating Creative Superteams
What are the best ways to create creative superteams? These are teams that are able to effectively communicate and collaborate to create even better solutions to huge challenges. In this talk presented at HOW Design Live 2014, I shared different tools that I use as part of how I lead project teams to build trust, create shared norms, and encourage dialogue in the service of creating more powerful design work.

The homework assignment is a key element in our hiring process. There's no set rules as to how we define the assignment, but in this case we asked Gordon to get his hands dirty and solve a problem similar to something we often face in our day to day business. There's a passion for cycling in our company and when it came time to select a brand to work on, we thought a cycling brand would be interesting and fun to work on. This is completely spec work as Schwinn is not a client of ours. Needless to say the homework was given an A+ and he's now a big part of our Design Dept.

We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
