Lisa Holmes presented on the Portland AIGA chapter's sustainability initiative from May 2008 to April 2010. The initiative began after Lisa discovered AIGA's focus on sustainability at a 2008 leadership retreat. She took on the role of sustainability chair and developed a mission, goals, and objectives to promote sustainable practices among designers. Key events and accomplishments included forming a green team, hosting speaker events like Compostmodern PDX and SHIFT, developing online sustainability resources, and planning the 2010 Green Design Expo for Earth Day. The initiative successfully raised awareness of sustainability issues among the local design community.
"I Heart Oregon (& Washington): 25 of the Portland Area's Best Hikes" book pr...Lisa Holmes
WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS HIKING BOOK?
It’s a highly visual full-color book with 400+ photos and customized maps displayed throughout. Four pages are dedicated to each hike, which include up to 15 color photos and detailed maps featuring topography, marked trails, distances, elevation, and trail highlights. As a graphic designer, I’ve focused on making the book’s design easy to use and providing a much more visual approach to the subject than currently exists.
WHO IS THE BOOK FOR?
Anyone who loves to spend time in the outdoors. Most of the hikes covered are easy to moderate in difficulty, with only a few that are more difficult challenges. You don’t need to be an avid hiker, but I hope you will become one after exploring the areas covered in this book. Along with several hikes that are well known and popular, I’ve shown areas that are less familiar yet still have enough interesting features to make a longer drive or extra physical effort on the trail well worth it.
WHAT AREAS DOES IT COVER?
Instead of trying to cover all hiking possibilities in the region, I focused on 25 hikes that I consider to be the best in the Portland region: ranging from the Oregon Coast to Mount Hood, and from Southwest Washington to the Central Cascades.
Texas Enteprise Speaker Series, May 9, 2013, The University of Texas at Austin.
The Cypriot bank deposit crisis has put a modern spin on Mark Twain's "It's not the return on my money but the return OF my money that counts." The unthinkable possibilities ahead emanate from the epic gap between a government's financing needs and its ability to sell debt. This has prompted politicians to consider options that were previously considered unthinkable.
You will learn —
The magnitude of the shortfalls in government funding
The adverse effects of the monetary fixes that are already underway
The means that governments use to confiscate private wealth
The protections being devised by private citizens
The possibility of new reserve currencies and global wealth reallocation
The Texas gold depository as an example of the unthinkables that lie ahead.

By using these tactics, you will succeed in growing your company's number of Twitter connections and, consequently, increasing your organization's ability to reach more current and future customers in the social space.

Ancient alchemists spent centuries in search of a way to turn lead (the metal even Superman can't see through) into something a little more valuable. We marketers have always tried to do the same thing - transform thousands of possible buyers into qualified prospects whom we manage to convince to line our pockets with gold. Frankly, our track record’s better, especially if you follow these four simple steps.

I was asked specifically to talk about "beta ideas". With that starting point, I decided to recap on where the language came from but to quickly move to how organisations need to think about releasing 'ideas' into an environment that is so unpredictable.
I talk about evolution and Andromedans. Apologies if any of it doesn't make total sense without my verbal narrative.

In Portland, if youʼre going to talk about sustainability, you have to walk the talk --
or youʼll get called out on it -- so we wanted to make sure we the event was planned well with these things in mind:
• location should be accessible via public transit
• reduce amount of waste generated from serving ware to signage to promotional materials
• the event venues needed to offer recycling and composting
• food and beverages needed to be locally sourced
• no bottled water or big brand sodas
You should not only do these things, but tell people about it
so they know that sustainability is being addressed in event planning as well.

an Earth Day event that would be a mini trade show with speakers.
For the trade show component, we needed to decide what types of vendors we wanted;
they needed to offer sustainable design products or services, so we eliminated some
potential sponsors due to this requirement. It was important to us that if we were going
to call it a green design event, the vendors in the trade show had to represent this.

tips on getting started
it’s not all or nothing
seek feedback and listen to what people want
build a team of passionate people
local board support
Friday, June 18, 2010 31
Advice to other chapters: when starting a sustainability initiative,
itʼs not all or nothing; it doesnʼt have to be 100% green; you can start small.
The objective is to get people to think about the impact of their choices.
To be successful, it is important to seek feedback and listen to what people want.
Developing a team of passionate people and then letting them contribute the things
they have to offer has been invaluable to our success.
The initiative needs to be supported by the board.
While everyone in the Portland chapter felt this was something we wanted to do,
we needed to see a structured plan to understand what was do-able.
