What designers of artificial companions need to understand about biological onesAaron Sloman
This document summarizes Aaron Sloman's presentation at AISB'08 on what designers of artificial companions need to understand about biological ones. Sloman discusses the difficulty of the task and argues that current AI is not capable of replicating the capabilities of young children. He outlines "Type 1" goals for artificial companions focused on engagement, and "Type 2" goals focused on enabling functions like helping users, which are much harder to achieve. Sloman asserts progress requires understanding how human capabilities like understanding environments, minds, and developing new motives emerge from biological and developmental factors. The key is replicating some of the generic learning abilities of young humans to build more advanced functions layer by layer.
This document discusses myths and realities about artificial intelligence (AI). It begins by noting that AI has existed for over 60 years, having been coined in the 1950s, and discusses early pioneers. It then defines different types of AI like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning. The document then addresses five common myths about AI, providing facts to counter each myth. Some myths addressed are that AI is a fad, dark magic, or not ready for production use. The facts provided emphasize AI is grounded in math, code, and hardware and is being used successfully by many companies for practical applications. Throughout examples of real-world AI uses by Amazon Web Services customers are provided.
SmartData Slides: Machine Learning - From Discovery to UnderstandingDATAVERSITY
Science and engineering are complementary disciplines, and in their distinctions, we see promise for an expanded role for machine learning (ML). The goal of science is discovery - identifying patterns of evidence that point to fundamental truths. Engineering uses this knowledge to build systems and solutions to problems. Science discovers the truth, engineering uses the understanding of truth to create. Within the #ModernAI landscape, machine learning has become the gold-standard for pattern discovery. Applications ranging from the identification of cat images on YouTube to autonomous vehicle control have captured the imagination. Less heralded are opportunities to apply ML to systems that understand what they have discovered. That’s the next frontier.
This webinar will present an overview of ML fundamentals and then show examples and a framework to identify opportunities for ML-enabled understanding.

AI-SDV 2020: Can There Be Profitable Revenue from an AI Deployment? The Upsid...Dr. Haxel Consult
In the last twelve months AI activity has continued to accelerate. While there have been major setbacks in AI over the decades its recent up surge seems to be holding. Many positives stories are hitting the news, but is anyone actually making any money on AI deployments besides the big AI vendors? Have there been significant, meaningful cost reductions from AI deployments? Yes! Brief case studies will be presented from primary and secondary sources illustrating impacts on real world cost savings and revenue enhancements. As is always the case with real world projects there are lessons learned!

Nowadays “Artificial Intelligence” is everywhere! And rightly so, it does enable us to do really cool things, things we couldn’t even imagine doing just a decade ago. In fact, it sometimes just feels like magic. This ‘magic’ behind it is often powered by “Machine Learning”. But even “AI” has its limitations.
I’ll show examples where “AI” and ML have failed (sometimes with horrible consequences) and will explain why failures are unavoidable in ML but also mention what we can do to reduce them in the future.
Furthermore, I’ll showcase how current AI implementations discriminate against minorities and how that in some cases even leads to a higher risk of death for those groups.
I’ll cover the bias that humans introduce and I’ll explain how poor choice of data makes our world even more unjust than it already is.
This document provides an introduction to the CS 188: Artificial Intelligence course at UC Berkeley. It discusses key topics that will be covered in the course, including rational decision making, computational rationality, a brief history of AI, current capabilities in areas like natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and game playing. The course will cover general techniques for designing rational agents and making decisions under uncertainty, with applications to domains like language, vision, games, and more. This document provides guidance on creating an effective elevator pitch. An elevator pitch should be concise and compelling, capturing your key message in less than one minute. It should include who you are, what your company or product does, who your target audience is, the benefits for them, and what makes you unique. The elevator pitch should be polished by keeping it concise, improving it through practice, customizing it to different audiences, and delivering it conversationally.
8 surprising reasons to listen to your intuitionMarc Israel
This document lists 8 reasons to listen to your intuition. It states that intuition comes from the unconscious mind which processes information parallel to conscious thought. It also notes that intuition is influenced by life experiences, reinforces confidence, helps process unconscious cues, can come to you while sleeping or distracted, takes a holistic mind-body approach, knows no age limits, and may be as good or better than analysis. The document encourages following intuition for success.
This document provides 7 tips for delivering an awesome speech at a TEDx event. The tips are to speak for your audience not yourself, keep things simple by cutting unnecessary content, tell simple personal stories, make it personal by sharing about yourself, use the stage space fully, and rehearse repeatedly for perfection. The document encourages following these tips to be instantly successful in public speaking.

Digital Banking in the Cloud: How Citizens Bank Unlocked Their MainframePrecisely
Inconsistent user experience and siloed data, high costs, and changing customer expectations – Citizens Bank was experiencing these challenges while it was attempting to deliver a superior digital banking experience for its clients. Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. Ultimately, this led to higher operating costs (MIPS), delayed response times, and longer time to market.
Ever-changing customer expectations demand more modern digital experiences, and the bank needed to find a solution that could provide real-time data to its customer channels with low latency and operating costs. Join this session to learn how Citizens is leveraging Precisely to replicate mainframe data to its customer channels and deliver on their “modern digital bank” experiences.

Chris Jones, Director of Product Management at BrainChip , presents the “Temporal Event Neural Networks: A More Efficient Alternative to the Transformer” tutorial at the May 2024 Embedded Vision Summit.
The expansion of AI services necessitates enhanced computational capabilities on edge devices. Temporal Event Neural Networks (TENNs), developed by BrainChip, represent a novel and highly efficient state-space network. TENNs demonstrate exceptional proficiency in handling multi-dimensional streaming data, facilitating advancements in object detection, action recognition, speech enhancement and language model/sequence generation. Through the utilization of polynomial-based continuous convolutions, TENNs streamline models, expedite training processes and significantly diminish memory requirements, achieving notable reductions of up to 50x in parameters and 5,000x in energy consumption compared to prevailing methodologies like transformers.
Integration with BrainChip’s Akida neuromorphic hardware IP further enhances TENNs’ capabilities, enabling the realization of highly capable, portable and passively cooled edge devices. This presentation delves into the technical innovations underlying TENNs, presents real-world benchmarks, and elucidates how this cutting-edge approach is positioned to revolutionize edge AI across diverse applications.
