This document discusses the properties and benefits of the termiticide Altriset. It summarizes that Altriset poses negligible risk to the environment, including soil, water, plants, birds, mammals, bees and earthworms. It has high acute and moderate chronic toxicity to aquatic invertebrates. Altriset also has negligible toxicity to beneficial insects like predators and parasites of other pests. The document highlights that Altriset is effective at killing termites within a short period of time and can transfer from exposed termites to unexposed termites, eliminating the entire termite colony within 35 days. The summary claims Altriset provides safer and more effective termite control solutions for pest management professionals and

Effects of ALTRISET in the Environment
When you’re kitted out for a full chemical job, you feel somewhat like an astronaut wearing all this gear. It feels like I’ve stepped off the set of the Jetsons – who can remember the Jetsons. Today it seems like they almost predicted the future with their flat screen televisions, Rosie the robot made who did the cleaning, mobile screens for talking. Well today I’m going to talk about Tomorrow’s Termite Solution and the exciting thing is that it’s already here.
The ideal termite solution is one that protects properties immediately, eliminates colonies and is safe for you, your customers and the environment. I’m going to cover these three aspects of ALTRISET today, namely – safest product on the market, starts working immediately/stops termites feeding in 2-4 hours but also finally the properties it has to ensure REAL Transfer and the elimination of colonies.
So let’s start with safety and taking all this gear off. Yes ALTRISET is an unscheduled poison so no PPE is required and you could theoretically treat a home in your shorts & T-shirt. Common sense tells you to be responsible and wear relevant/suitable clothing when working. But the message that I’d like you take away about ALTRISET is that it has an extremely low toxicity and as a result little effect on non-target organisms/animals and the environment.
In fact if you look at the LD50 rates for some commonly used chemicals and products and even the other termite products, ALTRISET’s safety is put into perspective. The graph on this slide shows the Lethal Dose rates for rats which is the commonly used measure for safety to mammals. Something like cyanide would be lethal 4 mg/kg and caffeine at around 200 mg/kg. The old OP chemistry like Chlorpyrifos Commonly used actives in termiticides fipronil is at 97 mg/kg and imidacloprid is at 450 mg/kg. Table salt has an LD 50 of 3000 mg/kg and ALTRISET/chlorantraniliprole is around 5000mg/kg.
Clearly it is a very safe product and as an employer your also have the responsibility for your workers/contractors and the statement on this slide explains this. While we cannot create an environment that is 100% risk free for our staff, it is still important that you consider using the safest products available and can you put a price on safety or more importantly are customers prepared to pay for safety?
Person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) – a person conducting a business or undertaking alone or with others, whether or not for profit or gain. A PCBU can be a sole trader
(for example a self-employed person), each partner within a partnership, company, unincorporated association or government department of public authority (including a municipal council).
Primary duty of care, ‘upstream’ duties and duties of ‘officers’, workers and other persons (sections 19-28)
Under the primary duty of care a PCBU must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable:
• the provision and maintenance of a working environment that is safe and without risks to health, including safe access to and exit from the workplace
• the provision and maintenance of plant, structure and systems of work that are safe and do not pose health risks (for example providing effective guards on machines and regulating the pace and frequency of work)
• the safe use, handling, storage and transport of plant, structure and substances (for example toxic chemicals, dusts and fibres)
• the provision of adequate facilities for the welfare of workers at work (for example access to washrooms, lockers and dining areas)
• the provision of information, instruction, training or supervision to workers needed for them to work without risks to their health and safety and that of others around them
• that the health of workers and the conditions of the workplace are monitored to prevent injury or illness arising out of the conduct of the business or undertaking, and
• the maintenance of any accommodation owned or under their management and control to ensure the health and safety of workers occupying the premises.
We as consumers pay for safety everyday – if you have a boat, you buy lifejackets, you wear safety boots to look after yourself at work and when you buy a new car there is usually the option to have the safety reverse camera. Your customers are willing to invest in a safer option as long as they get the result they require. This brings me to the second part – ALTRISET is safer for you and deadly to termites.
ALTRISET works – this graph shows that after exposure of as short as 1 min up to 30 mins ALTRISET kills all the termites within 10-14 days but importantly the mode of action of ALTRISET is such that the termites stop feeding within 2-4 hours. Their jaws become paralysed and they can no longer cause damage to this home

Just to demonstrate this and the final point we want to make around transfer, I’m going to ask for two volunteers from the audience. This guy has been treated with fipronil/other termiticide and is dead within 2-4 hours – please go sit over there. This guy has been treated with ALTRISET and has become paralysed within 2-4 hours and can no longer feed – I’m going to pop some tape on his mouth to illustrate this.
(you’ve already prepped this guy and given him post-it notes to go stick onto people)
He’s beginning to starve and there are some other interesting termite behaviours that start happening namely the community affect where the other nest mates start rallying together to help him and try to feed him/take him back to the colony.
Here is where the properties of ALTRISET really come to the fore in terms of REAL Transfer to the other termites in the colony. Yes all insecticides transfer but the termite still needs to be moving around (signal to the dead “fipronil” person who hasn’t moved from his seat)
Our ALTRISET exposed termite has been sticking post-it notes onto those of you he has walked/come into contact with and this demonstrates the indirect exposure.
.
Experiments examining impacts of Altriset treatments on termites traveling through pre-constructed subterranean galleries 15 , 30, and 60 min post exposure within the treated soil.
Termites removed from the treated tunnel tended to clump in groups in the recovery chamber. Little exploration, no tunneling or feeding; a cluster of termites flaring their jaws more often than the controls. They were clearly compromised within an hour
ALTRISET delivers distinctive affects on termite behaviour
Termites exposed to ALTRISET show reduced mobility and some tunneling ability and will begin to aggregate within colony
Unexposed termites groom and socially interact with exposed termites sharing ALTRISET throughout the colony for more comprehensive colony control
In the real world termites do not cause significant damage to structures quickly – it takes time
Slow mortality allows for efficient transfer of ALTRISET from exposed to unexposed termites
As you can see from this graph, while fipronil is very effective at killing the “donor” termites, there is less chance of 100% kill of recipient termites as you could see from the practical demonstration we have just shown you. Our termite has stopped feeding so is causing no further damage but is coming into contact with lots more termites and transferring ALTRISET to them causing them to stop feeding and to die.
Donor termites fed on 50ppm soil for 4 hours and then mixed with dyed recipients 1:1 and observed for 7-14 days100% transfer at 14 days is unsurpassed transfer in chemical treatments: Whilst this provides excellent control of non treated termites, the toxicant is not an IGR so therfor does not preform as a bait. It is still a chemical treated and grams of AI / termite are the key to the control of colonies. Colony control is driven by 2 factors: the ability of the product to move through the colony and the amount of AI that move through the colony. EG : A direct foaming treatment utilising 5 ml of Altriset will not kill 1 mio termites
To show some real life Transfer situations I have a couple of slides and I’ll describe what happened.
At this job, we treated the building on the left and when we returned 5 weeks later the pole some 30 m away had needed to be replaced as the previous pole had collapsed after the termite nest at the base of the pole had been eliminated – we hadn’t done a direct treatment to this nest yet the termites had been exposed to ALTRISET through transfer from the treatment of the building.
House across the road from this termite tree nest was treated with ALTRISET. The treatment transferred to the nest across the road all within 90 days – a distance of some 20 metres. A lawyer lived in the house next to the tree on the kerb and he was very grateful! As was the owner of the treated house.
I hope you have enjoyed the presso today and that I have demonstrated that this is the safest product for you, your staff, your customers and the environment and it is deadly to termites, stops them feeding within hours and has superior transfer properties to eliminated colonies.
