Agile Team Culture &
Empowerment
Hi, I am Sam !!
A little about me…
•Been with IT Industry for 14+ years
•I endorse and practice agile methodologies at work
•I’ve worked with Agile teams across BFS & Retail Industry and in
several graphic locations
•Passionate about finding new ways to energize teams and create
value!
Win for Clients! Win for Clients AND Employees!
So if it’s 3X better, why isn’t everyone
Being Agile like RIGHT NOW!
But Cultural changes are hard & Slow 
and Deliver Value for long term 
What is Culture in an Organization ?
Culture is how things are done or approached for the success of the
organization.
Management guru Peter Drucker says “Culture … is singularly persistent … In
fact, changing behavior works only if it is based on the existing ‘culture'”
• No one culture type is better than another.
• Depending on the type of work, one type of culture may be a better fit.
• Companies typically have a dominant culture with aspects from other
cultures. This is fine as long as those aspects serve the dominant culture.
• Different departments or groups may have different cultures. (e.g.
development vs. operations)
• Differences can lead to conflict.
Barriers to Becoming Agile
Unlearning is more difficult than learning.
Movers Moveable's Immovable
These are your change
agents!
Provide them
opportunities to support
and drive the culture
change to show other
why it’s so great
These individuals move with the
energy
Being able to show practical value
to them will help to convince them
there’s benefit to embracing an
Agile mindset
These individuals are your
impediments to change
Typically immovable don’t want
change regardless of the benefit.
Don’t spend much time trying to
change their mindset – instead,
focus on the movers and
movables
Build it into your DNA
Shared Vision
What are we doing
and Why
Shared Values
What do we Expect
from Each Other
Team Alliance
Hold the team
Accountable to itself
Team Goals
What do We want to
Achieve
Remember…
Culture is shaped by the worst
behavior a leader is willing to
tolerate.
- Gruenter & Whitaker
Culture is shaped by the best
behavior the leader is willing to
amplify.
- Jurgen Appelo
A leader must be willing to tolerate and also to amplify
And Most Importantly…
Build an Environment of
Only through Trust
will teams be fully
Empowered
How do you fix
the Trust Issue?
Someone has to
take the first step
forward and be
willing to trust
