3. Concept
Concept is an idea that integrate various elements into a whole
Ideas
Notions
Thoughts
Observation
4. Idea
• Specific
• Concrete Thought
(as a result of understanding, insight or observation)
Examples: way to orient building
the placement of kitchen
the best means to benefit from natural ventilation
the value of energy conservation, so on.
5. Notion
• Connotation of randomness (suggestion of uncertainty) .
• Insubstantial, unsubstantiated or often trivial (unreal, wild)
• Does not make any belief about appropriateness
Examples: a bird-case might be that of a bird in flight.
ventilation without window!
As a concept: it would not be appropriate.
6. Concept
• have appropriateness
• Support Intentions and Goal
• Respect each project’s unique
characteristics and restriction.

?Concept
7. • possibilities_ Truth hiding in even glib remarks.
• Some of NOTION seem as absurd, irrelevant and hypothetical
But it can find/resolve the critical problems
• It may be necessary to INVENT notion as a step in formulating an appropriate
concept
• Concept is similar to IDEA ( it’s a result of understanding)
• Concept is a thought concerning the way several elements / characteristics
combined in a single thing.
• Concept is antithesis of NOTION.
Concept
8. • Concept is an idea that integrate various aspects into a whole
CONCEPT In architecture ?
Programmatic
Requirement
Context
Belief
• It’s a result of concentrated and imaginative effort to bring apparently dissimilar
things together.
• Concept don’t have to be INVENTED by the architect
10. Forming of Concept
• Ask the following questions:
1. Purpose: What do you wish to get?
2. Comparisons: What others are getting?
3. Viewpoints: How does it look from different angles/levels?
4. Problems: What is going wrong?
• Then, explain by just one single idea;
• What? why? How?
That is your CONCEPT !
