The future of personal clouds will be very different from what you have imagined. As more and more of our interactions move online, we increasingly have need of an online place that operates for us. Personal clouds must become more than appliances to achieve their real potential.
An operating system manages computer hardware and provides an environment for application programs to run. It acts as an interface between the computer and user, providing graphical or command line interfaces. There are different types of operating systems like real-time, distributed, and embedded operating systems. Key components of an operating system include the kernel, which manages system resources, and processes, which the operating system schedules. Memory, storage, security, and input/output management are also important operating system functions. Popular operating systems include Linux, a free and open-source UNIX-like system, and Windows XP, designed by Microsoft.
This document summarizes Operation Groundswell's fundraising efforts and projects in 2013. It details the various community partnerships and initiatives undertaken by OG participants across East Africa, Southeast Asia, Peru, India, West Africa, and the Middle East. In total, OG raised $181,815 CAD in 2013, which supported projects related to infrastructure development, education, health, and community empowerment.
After producing several events, I've captured the basic process for streamlined event management in this Event Plan Template. While useful for one-off events, it should be particularly useful for teams that want to create a repeatable approach to producing multiple events.
The document provides an overview of embedded operating systems. It discusses two general approaches: adapting an existing commercial OS or building a purpose-built OS. It then describes the embedded OS eCos, including its configurability, components, hardware abstraction layer, kernel, I/O system, and scheduler. Finally, it discusses the purpose-built OS TinyOS, including its goals for high concurrency, limited resources, hardware evolution, diverse applications and platforms, and robustness. It describes TinyOS' use of components, tasks, commands, events, and its shared resource configuration.
The Simple Scheduler in Embedded System @ OSDC.TW 2014Jian-Hong Pan
The document describes a simple scheduler module implemented in C for embedded systems. It breaks processes into small jobs represented by functions that are scheduled in a first-in, first-out queue without preemption. This allows embedding an operating system concept into simple systems using only functions and a ready queue. Interrupts can add jobs to the queue. The scheduler and example oscilloscope application demonstrate scheduling without process state using only callbacks.

The document analyzes whether tidal power from the Minas Passage alone could power Nova Scotia. It finds that during summer months, tidal power could meet demand if excess power could be stored. However, storing enough energy to power the province year-round would require an impractical compressed air energy storage system with a storage vessel over 2km tall and wide, larger than any existing energy storage project. While tidal power could reduce fossil fuel use, fully powering Nova Scotia from the Minas Passage is currently infeasible due to energy storage limitations.

A study by AECOM analyzed the potential for co-locating wind and solar farms in Australia. The study found that retrofitting existing wind farms with solar farms between 25-50% of the wind farm's capacity could result in only 5% curtailment based on historical generation data from 10 Australian wind farms. Co-locating wind and solar was found to provide synergistic cost savings through reduced development timelines and shared grid infrastructure. Total capital and operating cost savings of 3-13% and 3-16% respectively were estimated. Seasonal and time-of-day complementarity between wind and solar generation profiles provided opportunities to balance output at some sites.
Infigen Energy is Australia's largest owner and operator of wind energy, with over 556MW of capacity. It has a development pipeline of over 1200MW of wind and solar projects with planning approvals. NSW has opportunities for further wind development due to growing demand, aging coal plants, and supportive government policies like the RET scheme. Wind is emerging as one of the lowest cost new generation technologies in Australia. Infigen's presentation outlines the investment opportunities for wind energy in meeting NSW's electricity needs.
Smart Regulation for a 21st Century Energy System_Australian Clean Energy Sum...TransGrid AU
The document discusses the need for smart regulation to enable Australia's transition to a 21st century renewable energy system. It notes that coal generation will decline substantially by 2036 as wind and solar increase significantly. Large renewable energy zones have been identified in NSW, VIC, and SA that could support over 25GW of new wind and solar generation. However, ongoing regulatory reviews have paralyzed progress, unlike Texas which established renewable energy zones and transmission to unlock over 18.5GW of low-cost wind power. Smart long-term regulation and planning is needed to guide Australia's energy transition and reduce high consumer prices.
Report: Access Northeast Project - Reliability Benefits and Energy Cost Savin...Marcellus Drilling News
A report commissioned by Spectra Energy and its partners, researched and published by ICF International, which provides strong justification for the proposed Access Northeast pipeline project in New England. The project would flow Marcellus Shale gas from Pennsylvania to New England (and into Canada), providing New England electric generators that use natgas as fuel with an important, cheap new source. The project would lead to much lower electricity costs for New Englanders.

RETOOLING NIGERIAS ELECTRICITY GENERATION SUB – SYSTEM FOR SUSTAINABLE GRID O...Najeem Olawale Adelakun
ABSTRACT
Experts are varied in estimating the amount of power needed for national development. One expert
estimated 297,900 MW by the year 2030 using a 13 percent Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The Power
Sector Road Map’s aspiration is 40,000 MW by the year 2020 while the preferred Vision 20:2020 target is
40GW (40,000 MW) available capacity. Vision 20:2020 further proposed that hydro sources contribute 10%
of this value; thermal, 80%; coal, 6% and renewables, 4%. However, as at December 2017, Nigeria’s total
installed generating capacity was 12,324.40 MW. In order to assess the fundamentals and proffer solutions
for the improvement of power generation to meet popular expectations, this work analyses the installed
capacities of the nation from 1986 – 1995, on the one hand and from 2007 – 2016, on the other hand using
graphical illustrations and tables. The gap between the two time phases was deliberate to create some effect.
The results show that over the years, there has been an apparent, non – challance towards systematic
development of Nigeria’s power sector. To put a check to this deteriorating condition / trend, useful
suggestions have been made
This report summarizes wind data collected from two meteorological towers over a 32 month period from 2006-2009. The data was used to assess the wind resource and estimate potential energy production from a horizontal axis and vertical axis wind turbine. Key findings include:
- Average monthly wind capacity at the tower location was 31% for a horizontal axis turbine and 17% for a vertical axis turbine during the initial 12 month study period.
- Wind capacity averaged 27% for the horizontal axis turbine and 15% for the vertical axis turbine during the 2008-2009 study period.
- June, July and August typically had the lowest wind velocities of the year according to the historical data collected.
Australian energy consumption rose by 1 per cent in 2014–15 to around
5,920 petajoules, following two years of consecutive decline.
Energy productivity (gross domestic product/energy consumption) rose by
1 per cent in 2014–15, and has increased by 28 per cent over the past 15
years.
Most of the growth in energy use was for electricity generation, reflecting
increased demand for electricity and a switch in the generation mix towards
coal (which has a lower efficiency than renewables).
Transport, which is the second largest energy use in Australia, continued
to grow steadily by 1 per cent.
For the first time in more than a decade, energy use in the mining sector
fell in 2014–15. This decline in energy use occurred across the sector,
despite general growth in output, and reflects cost cutting measures and
adoption of less energy-intensive technologies.
Energy use also fell in the manufacturing sector, mainly in non-ferrous
metals, underpinned by some large industrial closures such as the Gove
alumina refinery, Point Henry aluminium smelter and the Kurnell petroleum
refinery.
Final energy consumption, which excludes energy used in energy
conversion activities such as electricity generation and petroleum refining,
was flat in 2014–15.
Oil remained the largest primary energy source in Australia, at 38 per cent
in 2014–15, followed by coal (32 per cent) and natural gas (24 per cent).
Renewables accounted for 6 per cent of Australia’s energy mix.
After five years of decline, coal use rose by 3 per cent in 2014–15, although
consumption is still around 20 per cent lower than its peak in 2008–09.
Use of gas and renewables grew by 1 and 2 per cent, respectively. Oil
consumption fell by 1 per cent. The closure of domestic petroleum refining
capacity outweighed increased end use for transport and electricity
generation.
The document discusses energy management and conservation in Pakistan as an effective way to minimize load shedding. It outlines Pakistan's existing energy situation including generation capacity and demand. It then discusses future energy demand projections and generation projects planned to meet demand. Significant potential for energy conservation is identified in various sectors like industry, transport, buildings and agriculture, which could help reduce the gap between supply and demand and minimize load shedding.
