Advocacy involves influencing powerful decision-makers through defending human rights, promoting justice, and changing government policies and practices to address the underlying causes of poverty and support good development. Advocates ask for new policies, revisions to unjust policies, enforcement of good policies, and better implementation of policies being unfairly implemented in order to change attitudes, practices, or block threatened policy changes. The roles of an advocate include representing, accompanying, empowering, mediating, modeling, negotiating, networking, lobbying, mobilizing, and bargaining.
