Advocacy Campaign Proposal
Project: Digital
This advocacy campaign would try to achieve two different things. Primarily, this
campaign would call for a more rapid transition from use of film to digital when shooting
movies. I would acknowledge the difficulty to satisfy advocates for both parties, mainly since I
am sympathetic towards the decline of film. There is a history that canāt be forgotten and there
are techniques that took decades to perfect; however, times do change. From the birth of the
first āmoving picturesā, to the rise of 3-D and IMAX, there is a clear indication that the pursuit
of more technologically advanced films has not slowed down. Of course this might be all about
business, especially considering the success of AVATAR, but that also goes to prove that
technology opens more doors for visionaries who strive to translate their vision onto the big
screens successfully.
I will explore various film communities (including independent film makers) and will
compare their views to get a better idea myself on what the current stand is. From my
experiences at three different film programs and attending a school filled with movie-lovers, I
have seen this debate rise again and again. This is why I am starting this campaign. To help
ease the transition for those who will try to cling onto the idea that movies should be made on
film. The change is inevitable. Trends change with the times and the time is calling for digital,
3D, and IMAX. The quicker we move onto this, the easier it will be for film makers to put their
practice and focus into digital film making.
This is not calling for an extermination of film. In fact, this is calling for the appreciation
of everything it has done, both culturally and technologically. On the other hand, this advocacy
campaign will push for the leap towards digital while staying true to the craft that the many
pioneers have perfected over the past century. There is no limit to the mind so there is no limit
to the future.
