2. Adverbs of frequency
Adverbs of frequency perform these functions and, as their
name suggests, they serve to indicate how often the
action of the verb occurs (see sentence a above) or how
often what is expressed by the entire sentence happens
(as in the sentences b and c). With the exception of
"hardly ever", the adverbs of frequency in English are
made up of a single word. But how do you know which
one to use on each occasion? That depends on the level
of regularity you want to convey. The following table will
help you:
How often do you study English grammar? Often? Or almost
never? A fundamental aspect when we learn any language is
knowing how often we do things. To do this, in English, just
like in Spanish, we usually .
3. Uses
Adverbs of frequency are what we use to express the frequency with
which an action is performed. That is, when we want to talk about the
frequency with which we do something or in which something
happens. These are the most used adverbs of frequency:
Always Often
Constantly Occasionally Continually
Frequently Regularly
Generally Rarely
Hardly ever Seldom
Normally Sometimes
Never Usually
4. Rules
One of the difficulties when studying English grammar is knowing where to place
adverbs in a sentence. And you have to be careful, since they cannot be placed in any
way.There are several rules:
FIRST RULE
The general rule is that they are placed before the verb and with a basic structure:
Subject + Adverb of Frequency + MainVerb + Complement
I always wash my hair in the mornings.
Siempre me lavo el pelo por las mañanas.
My dad never waits for everyone to be at the table to start eating.
Mi padre nunca espera a que este todo el mundo en la mesa para empezar a comer.
5. SECOND RULE
The second most used is when the adverb goes after the verb 'to be' or a modal verb:
Subject +Verb ‘to be’ + Adverb of frequency + Complement
• My brother is never on time.
Mi hermano nunca llega puntual
• You can always call me.
6. THIRD RULE
he adverb of frequency can also go at the beginning of a sentence, but only Usually,
Frequently, Occasionally,Often and Sometimes can start or end a sentence.
Adverb of frequency + Subject +Verb + Complement.
Subject +Verb + Complement + Adverb of Frequency.
• Sometimes I see her at the supermarket.
A veces la veo en el supermercado.
• I go to the gym regularly.
Voy al gimnasio regularmente.
7. These rules about the position of adverbs can seem a bit
random. Why put the adverb after the verb "to be" and the
auxiliaries but before the other verbs? The reason may be
related to pronunciation.
