2. Introduction
◦ In this presentation we are going to talk about the adverbial clauses of time and
the conjunctions that the students need to make the structure.
◦ The students already saw this topic in class, that is why this is just a brief review.
3. Objective
At the end of this review, the student will be able to identify the adverbial clauses
of time easier in different sentences.
The student will apply their knowledge about the topic through some activities
they have to complete in a separate piece of paper and hand in (in class).
4. Adverbial Clauses
Adverb clauses provide additional information about how something is done.
All clauses contain a subject and a verb
Introduced by subordinating conjunctions.
When an adverb clause begins the sentence, use a comma to separate the two clauses but when the adverb
clause finishes the sentence, there is no need for a comma.
5. These clauses begin with conjunctions such
as..
When : means at that moment, at that time.
Before : means 'before that moment.
After : means 'after that moment.
While : mean 'during that time.
By the time : expresses the idea that one event has been completed
before another.
Until (till) : express 'up to that time‘.
Since : means 'from that time'
The first (second, third…) : means 'that specific time'
6. Examples:
When: She was making the dinner when I arrived.
Before: We will make an “altar” before evening.
After: Mary was ready after I arrived.
While: He surprised her with flowers while she was distracted.
By the time: We started the Paty by the time Tom knocked the door.
Until: We waited until 12 to hug each other.
Since: I celebrate Christmas at my grandma’s house since I was a baby
