Completion of the ADR and Advanced ADR workshops will satisfy the educational requirements for membership

Advanced ADR
Workshop
($2,995 + HST
)
Approved for 32 continuing
professional development
(CPD) hours by the HRPA.
All mediation cases are supervised by experienced coaches who provide personal feedback.
All case studies and role plays are done in a private setting, not in front of a group.
TheAppliedADRWorkshop is the most challenging and most interesting workshop we offer. There are eight difficult mediation
role plays, the choice of either the Interpersonal Skills Exercise or the Personal Mentoring Exercise, and every registrant will
observe a real mediation with me (or one of our other mediators) after the course.
Eight Mediation Role Plays
At the workshop, you will participate in 8 complex mediation role plays, each of which is coached. The role plays are followed
by instructor-led debriefs on advanced mediation skills. The role plays will cover important issues that mediators have to deal
with, such as:
Interpersonal Skills Exercise
During the workshop, you will do the Interpersonal Skills Exercise (IPS).You apply your skills to a real problem
that you are dealing with, either personal or work-related, and work individually with one of the instructors to
find innovative ways to deal with the problem. You will be recorded and your recording will be reviewed with
the instructor in a confidential setting. You then keep the DVD recording.
Personal Mentoring Exercise
During the workshop, you will have a one-on-one session with an instructor. You will work on a negotiation,
communication, and/or facilitation skill set of your choice (which will not be videorecorded). You will have the
opportunity to practice those skills with reference to a challenging situation of your choice, using a number of
tools that we will provide you.You will be shown new ways to exercise those skills effectively and will be given
a chance to practise them. You will receive constructive instructor feedback on how to improve, and will be
able to observe the instructor demonstrating tools and techniques relevant to the skills and problem chosen.
Each participant will receive at least 1 hour and 20 minutes with the instructor one-on-one (if confidentiality
is desired), and up to 2 hours and 40 minutes if working with a chosen partner (each person in the pair would
have half the time to work on their problem, with the other partner present to contribute and share in the
learning). Participants will leave with an action plan of new approaches to apply to their conflicts.
• parties who withhold or mislead on important facts
• obtaining closure
• mediating complex issues and parties
• evaluative and facilitative styles
• shuttle mediation techniques
• using pre-mediation meetings and caucuses
• mediating purely financial cases
• working from and towards a draft agreement
• handling ethical and harassment issues, racism, strong
emotions, and entrenched history
• mediating with unreasonable parties
• confidentiality issues

After the course, you will have the opportunity to sit in on a real mediation

Web-based training
You take the courses on-line, over the Internet, at your own pace. You do not need to be a computer expert to take this user-
friendly course. During the courses you interact with animated characters who make statements, ask questions, use difficult
tactics, express strong emotions, and otherwise create challenging situations. You will have to react to what the character
says and does to try to succeed at the task presented to you.

NEGOTIATION COURSE
(negotiate.tv) ($199+HST
)
The course is made up of 8 modules,7 of which are simulated
negotiations. In each of the role plays,if you do not negotiate
the best deal, you will be told why and asked to try again.
You will then be sent back to the end of the last
level that you completed successfully. If you get stuck,
there is a help feature that will tell you how to respond.
Once you have negotiated the best deal, you will
be able to review our Negotiation Notes, discussing
how the concepts in the module can be applied in the
real world. Each set of the Notes also has a section of
practical tips. At the end of the course, you will be
able to download all 65 pages of the Notes (with aTable of
Contents and Index)and therefore have a short book to keep
as reference material.
“The material is presented in a way that really stays with you. Excellent!
Consistent, confident facilitators who have lots of integrity and enthusiasm.
The instructors were very personable and approachable.Excellent knowledge
base, confident command of the material. Effective use of humour and
sharing of personal experiences. Not something you want to forget about!”

you have the hard but necessary conversations that we all
have to face. In each of the 5 course modules, you will have
to react to what the character says, answer questions, ask
other questions, and try to achieve your objective.

Eight Mediation Role Plays At the workshop, you will participate in 8 complex mediation role plays, each of which is coached. The role plays are followed by instructor-led debriefs on advanced mediation skills. The role plays will cover important issues that mediators have to deal with, such as: Interpersonal Skills Exercise During the workshop, you will do the Interpersonal Skills Exercise (IPS).You apply your skills to a real problem that you are dealing with, either personal or work-related, and work individually with one of the instructors to find innovative ways to deal with the problem. You will receive constructive instructor feedback on how to improve, and will be able to observe the instructor demonstrating tools and techniques relevant to the skills and problem chosen. Each participant will receive at least 1 hour and 20 minutes with the instructor one-on-one (if confidentiality is desired), and up to 2 hours and 40 minutes if working with a chosen partner (each person in the pair would have half the time to work on their problem, with the other partner present to contribute and share in the learning).
