Addition with Regrouping
Learning How to Add Numbers with
Regrouping
What is Addition?
• Addition is the process of finding the total or
sum by combining two or more numbers.
Understanding Place Value
• Place value tells us the value of a digit based
on its position in a number. In a two-digit
number, the first digit represents tens, and the
second digit represents ones.
What is Regrouping?
• Regrouping is when the sum of the digits in
one place value is more than 9, so you carry
over to the next place value.
Adding Without Regrouping
• Example: 25 + 14
• Step 1: Add the ones: 5 + 4 = 9
• Step 2: Add the tens: 2 + 1 = 3
• Answer: 39
Adding With Regrouping
• Example: 26 + 17
• Step 1: Add the ones: 6 + 7 = 13 (Regroup 13
into 1 ten and 3 ones)
• Step 2: Add the tens: 2 + 1 (carried) + 1 = 4
• Answer: 43
