Counting on number lines.
 When we add, we are combining two sets of objects
and counting a total. If we know how many is in the
first group, we can start at that number and ‘count on’,
like this:

7 8
9 10
Counting on number lines.
 On a number line, we can do the same thing. We can
start at one number and ‘count on’. It is easier to start
at the bigger number and ‘count on’ the smaller
number.
