Short term measures for controlling acute diarrhoeal diseases include appropriate clinical management, oral rehydration therapy (ORT), and home remedies. ORT involves replacing lost water and electrolytes and has been shown to treat 90-95% of cases. Improved ORT solutions have reduced osmolality and included additional ingredients like trisodium citrate to make the packet more stable. Guidelines are provided for assessing dehydration levels and administering ORT based on age. Homemade ORS and home available fluids like rice water or weak tea can also be used if commercial ORT is unavailable. Other nutritional support like continuing usual foods and breastfeeding are important along with ORT.
