Shylock believes the Duke has no choice but to enforce the bond terms because it was a legal contract. Portia cites new laws that trap Shylock - he is trying to kill an citizen which is punishable by death or losing all his property. Portia requests that Bassanio give her Antonio's ring as a gift for helping save his life, and that all of Antonio's other debts will be forgiven, arguing this is a small request compared to what was done for them.
