VOC ensures that you have done your ground work before taking a plunge in to product development which cost time, money and resources. VOC program can be done for a variety of reason and at multiple points in product development process, but as product manager you should have objectives clearly defined, else the results could be disastrous.
Most early level VOC is done to validate the hypotheses and identify audience. What differentiate a great product manager from a good one is the capability to identify the customer need and articulate it in a clear problem statement. Early stage VOC helps you identify a customer segment and gauge their NEEDS to define a crisp problem statement.
In early stage of product Working directly with your target customers not only gives you information about their preferences an behaviors but also gives you insights in to your competition. This know-how will be more valuable than reading the manuals of your competitors product or run a quick benchmarking in a lab environment.
You can also run VOC program to segment the available marketing and identify different marketing strategies for each target segment. One of the crucial step in VOC at this stage is to identify the FEATURES and FACTORS that will make your product THE BEST alternative to your competition.

Structured Authoring for Business-Critical ContentLavaCon
By Jason Aiken, Quark
For years DITA has armed technical documentation professionals with a componentized approach to content that overcomes the many challenges caused by stand-alone, static documents created in silos. The problem, however, is that there is so much other business-critical content out there that could benefit from a structured approach to authoring.
In this session you will learn:
--The definition of business-critical content and understand just how much exists.
--How expansive the market opportunity is for helping non-technical authors transform their businesses with structured authoring.
--What it takes for a non-technical author to adopt a structured authoring tool.
--Why it is critical for technical documentation experts to translate their best practices into solutions that non-technical content creators can apply to business-critical content.

Integrating accessibility in the organization's web development lifecycleAccessibilitéWeb
Web accessibility standards introduce inclusion concerns for people with disabilities that disrupt traditional patterns within organizations. These standards challenge development practices that are often considered to be tried and true. Introducing these guidelines to a web development team leads to changes in practices that may jeopardize a project's profitability. While accessibility principles are generally not difficult to implement, the amount of details to consider while doing so is significant and therefore, the risks of falling into certain traps abound. Based on a theoretical workflow model anyone can relate to, this training session will explain how Web accessibility, unlike other Web-related practices, is characterized by the fact that it influences every aspect of the web development lifecycle. This means that accessibility is not just another specialist the project manager needs to squeeze in the traditional process. Rather, web accessibility requires every member of the team to understand the requirements that may affect the work they do in order to ensure that proper decisions are being made at the best possible time in the project. The training session will conclude with a distribution of WCAG 2.0's success criteria, based on the responsibilities each individual holds within the development team. Sharing these requirements between team members will ensure the success of the accessibility goals in all phases of production.

Voice of the Customer may be one of the most misunderstood concepts in the product management process. Unfortunately any survey or conversation with a customer these days is labeled as "Voice of the Customer" and just viewed as a "check box" item. In this discussion we will describe how there are different approaches to collecting the Voice of the Customer and how the wrong approach will unintentionally bias the results that are obtained. We will relate different Voice of the Customer approaches with project portfolio classifications for product development. Recommendations for how to apply them in different segments of the value chain will also be provided.

Accessibility is More Than a Compliance CheckboxApplause
Everyone is a potential consumer – but, it is your job to provide them with experiences that can be equally accessed. Now more than ever, it is critical for organizations to meet accessibility standards. Not only to capture the one-quarter of U.S. population living with a disability, but to improve the overall quality and inclusivity of your digital experiences.
Mark Lapole, Lead Product Manager of Accessibility at eBay, discusses how the ecommerce retailer designed, tested and launched a comprehensive accessibility program with real users in real-world scenarios.
Building and Scaling High Performing Technology Organizations by Jez Humble a...Agile India
High performing organizations don't trade off quality, throughput, and reliability: they work to improve all of these and use their software delivery capability to drive organizational performance. In this talk, Jez presents the results from DevOps Research and Assessment's five-year research program, including how continuous delivery and good architecture produce higher software delivery performance, and how to measure culture and its impact on IT and organizational culture. They explain the importance of knowing how (and what) to measure so you focus on what’s important and communicate progress to peers, leaders, and stakeholders. Great outcomes don’t realize themselves, after all, and having the right metrics gives us the data we need to keep getting better at building, delivering, and operating software systems.

Continuous Testing: A Key to DevOps SuccessTechWell
As IT organizations adopt a DevOps strategy, continuous testing (CT) becomes a key ingredient of the DevOps ecosystem. CT enables faster release cycles, more changes per release, upfront isolation of risks, and reduced operations costs. The approach to scale the traditional automation testing infrastructure, test environments, and test data management requires a culture shift using new tools and techniques. Sujay Honnamane discusses a CT strategy for aspiring and already implemented DevOps organizations. Sujay shares examples of tools, techniques, and practical solutions that include continuous integration using the Jenkins CI server, service virtualization through CA Lisa tools, automated code coverage analysis to create impact-based tests, automated test script load balancing for effective use of test environments, and faster test cycles, providing a holistic approach/workflow for CT. Sujay and his teams have successfully implemented CT for several clients in their DevOps journey to achieve a repeatable and highly predictable software delivery process.

Why developing research software is like a startup (and why this matters)Neil Chue Hong
When we think about the software used in research and science, we might think of the commercial packages with thousands of users, or the millions of lines of code that support experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider, or indeed the millions of scripts written every day by researchers across the world to undertake simple tasks. What is clear is that modern research relies on software: a recent survey of UK researchers conducted by the Software Sustainability Institute reported that 92% of researchers used software, and 69% could not conduct their work without it. Millions of dollars are invested each year in supporting a quasi-industry of software production, with the equivalent of the full-spectrum from large multinationals and tiny cottage industries, but little is known about whether this is efficient or indeed appropriate. This talk will examine the similarities between the development of software in the research environment and the lifecycle of technology startup companies. It will also consider the driving factors behind adoption of software and the impact of software sustainability on the ability to conduct research.

CSUN 2024 Simplifying Accessible Data Visualizations - 5 April 2024.pptxTed Gies
Highcharts and Elsevier share recent research into making interactive web charts more accessible. Our usability studies focused on improving intelligibility and understandability of non-visual user experiences of graphs and charts. We will share findings around the design of use case-based text descriptions and personalized charts. When we started our research into screen reader friendly charts eight years ago, we challenged the notion that a table version of the data was an equivalent and sufficiently accessible alternative. Since then, we’ve explored many features such as automated data point and structure descriptions, human created descriptions, and sonification or tones. We will share our research into examining different information seeking modes or use cases. What is the ideal user experience for use cases of: data point examination, identification of trends, and main idea extraction? Based upon these modes we will propose optimal designs for accessible data visualization consumption. With each of the new accessibility research questions we will provide real user feedback from non-sighted users on our approach. We will also show screen reader demos to help illustrate design considerations.
CSUN 2023 Automated Descriptions 3 March 2023 TG.pptxTed Gies
Highcharts is a world leading provider of accessible charting tools for the web, used by 80 of the top 100 Fortune companies. Recently Highcharts and global publishing company Elsevier’s Digital Accessibility Team collaborated to provide better accessibility for line charts with large datasets. Line charts are often used to visualize datasets with thousands of data points. This presents a challenge for non-visual access, as providing access to individual data points is not sufficient. A reader of a line chart with a large amount of data will aim to extract information about trends, patterns, and outliers from the chart. Can we make this information more accessible by communicating it through text and sound? What is the most intuitive way to experience this data through sound? And to which extent can we automate the text description? Human authored text descriptions of charts are historically difficult to beat, but can in many cases be impractical – such as where data is dynamically loaded in real-time. Automated text descriptions can also be designed to be more objective and less prone to biases. Will users be able to trust these descriptions? Will they still prefer those created by a human? With each of the new accessibility research questions we will provide user feedback from non-sighted users on our approaches. We will share findings about best practices, and show screen reader demos to help illustrate design considerations.
Historically, VPATs or (Accessibility Conformance Reports) have been the way in which to measure and document compliance with a number of standards including (WCAG, US 508, and EN 301 549). Companies which produce many products often produce many VPATs to help meet the needs of customers and internal stakeholders. Within VPATs, there is a wealth of data generated that, if fully leveraged, can provide insights into a company’s accessibility estate. Data can be derived from VPATs such as the distribution of checkpoints that are fully, partially, and not supported. This data can be mined, aggregated, and sliced in ways to help provide larger insights. Elsevier has a large number of products, and we used this data analytics approach to compare and rank using data from dozens of accessibility evaluations. We will share the story of why this became necessary for us, and the eventual decisions that led to our current iteration. We will also go over the benefits of ranking products against each other and how it breeds competitiveness, especially in an organization that takes accessibility seriously. We will also share the success stories of how this comparison has driven accessibility remediation efforts across numerous products. We will also go over the limitations of these analytics and any current issues they still have.
Highcharts and Elsevier share recent research into making interactive web charts more accessible. Our usability studies focused on three areas, including stacked column charts, scatter plots, and charts with drill-down interactivity. We will share design considerations for keyboard navigation and the understandability of non-visual representations of data visualizations.

CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!

Cosmetic shop management system project report.pdfKamal Acharya
Buying new cosmetic products is difficult. It can even be scary for those who have sensitive skin and are prone to skin trouble. The information needed to alleviate this problem is on the back of each product, but it's thought to interpret those ingredient lists unless you have a background in chemistry.
Instead of buying and hoping for the best, we can use data science to help us predict which products may be good fits for us. It includes various function programs to do the above mentioned tasks.
Data file handling has been effectively used in the program.
The automated cosmetic shop management system should deal with the automation of general workflow and administration process of the shop. The main processes of the system focus on customer's request where the system is able to search the most appropriate products and deliver it to the customers. It should help the employees to quickly identify the list of cosmetic product that have reached the minimum quantity and also keep a track of expired date for each cosmetic product. It should help the employees to find the rack number in which the product is placed. It is also Faster and more efficient way.
Sachpazis:Terzaghi Bearing Capacity Estimation in simple terms with Calculati...Dr.Costas Sachpazis
Terzaghi's soil bearing capacity theory, developed by Karl Terzaghi, is a fundamental principle in geotechnical engineering used to determine the bearing capacity of shallow foundations. This theory provides a method to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of soil, which is the maximum load per unit area that the soil can support without undergoing shear failure. The Calculation HTML Code included.
Overview of the fundamental roles in Hydropower generation and the components involved in wider Electrical Engineering.
This paper presents the design and construction of hydroelectric dams from the hydrologist’s survey of the valley before construction, all aspects and involved disciplines, fluid dynamics, structural engineering, generation and mains frequency regulation to the very transmission of power through the network in the United Kingdom.

9. Start of Engineering Village A11y Work
• New visual redesign of Engineering Village was implemented.
• Redesign was a good time to fully embrace accessibility.
• Incremental remediation began.
• Accessibility user testing.
10. User Testing – Screen Reader Users
• Gathered 6 users to participate in user testing. Two low vision users
and four blind users.
− Good consensus overall for the tasks.
− Many of the concerns and barriers brought up during testing end up being items the
accessibility team was already aware of.
− Still beneficial to perform user testing despite issues that may exist.
− Keyboard operability with custom dropdowns – affirmation of the no-brainer issues.
− Expected keyboard interaction with links vs buttons – issues that may only come up
in user testing.
− Show value in testing with users at all phases.
Example Dropdown:
11. User Testing – Low Vision Users
• The in-person session was very valuable, as it was our first time
doing a user session in-person with a low vision user.
− Content spaced far apart.
− Labels far away from their input fields.
− No responsive view.
− If something was happening on a different part of the screen, it was difficult to notice
when zoomed in so much.
12. VPAT and Continued Process
• User testing completed and feedback was incorporated into
remediation meetings.
• VPAT completion a month later.
• Continuous improvement throughout 2018 and VPAT revision saw a
noticeable improvement.
− No WCAG 2.0 AA fails.

Editor's Notes
Some information about me.
In order to stay up to date on standards and ensure an accessible website, we are working through a process which may involve developing and implementing new features or updates to current features, evaluating those features for any accessibility issues, updating our documentation and code-base, consulting when needed with our experts at Elsevier, and finally releasing to the customers via our production environment.
It should be noted that this is all part of an AGILE process with continual updates. Breakdown: 1) Development: Our development team works with UX and standards to implement accessible code. 2) Implementation: The code is implemented internally in our certification environment. 3) Evaluation: QA and UX are responsible for evaluating any issues with the code. 4) Update: the code may or may not be updated, based on the evaluation. 5) EV works with our internal ELS experts to consult on any issues with implementation. 6) Production: code is released to production environment (public). Any of these steps may be happening at any given time. For instance, there may be a consultation after production, which will trigger the process. Or, there may be an evaluation of an existing feature that may trigger the process based on updated standards.
Every year, we do a full evaluation using the VPAT on our site. From this evaluation, we do this process more site-wide (as opposed to feature-specific) in order to make any additional accessibility updates that may have been missed or broken throughout the year.
Some information about me.
EV team came to us and wanted a review of the redesign and an eventual VPAT.
Some users had issues navigating Webex, getting their screen shared, or having their screen reader audio come through.
Seeing how the low vision user interacted with the site was very enlightening. Flaws in certain design choices became very apparent when seen by a low vision user.
With the increasing numbers of customers and customer types asking for accessibility during RFP and renewal, we’ve had to adapt our response strategy by expanding our toolset and capability.
For example:
The goal is to be prepared so that we can
Engineering Deans, Department Chairs and Librarians manage and analyze the research output from engineering schools by tracking new publications, authors and topic trends. Yet, creating reports summarizing research activity for an institution can be time consuming and a challenge to find comprehensive data.
Solution:
Create an Engineering School Profile (ESP) page for Compendex customers that summarizes research output for engineering schools.
Benefits:
Engineering Deans and Chairs have access to school reports on-demand and can share via email and download to include within reports and presentations
Librarians can utilize the profile to do outreach and engagement with other stakeholders on campus
The charts are engineering-focused. By utilizing Compendex data to generate the reports, users have creditable and comprehensive engineering output report data (190 engineering disciplines!)
Reports can be customized by engineering subject area and date range to meet university reporting needs
