not?
Based on the diagram, how can you
describe the direction of the car?
Is the car accelerating? Why or why

Is the car changing its direction as it
travels around the oval?
Is the car accelerating? Why or why

Based on the three diagrams, what are the
conditions that should be present to say that an object
is accelerating?
2. Choose a spacious place to walk
straight.
3. Mark on the round the starting
line. All participants must start from
the starting line at the same time.
Acceleration tells
how fast an object, or
a body changes its
velocity.
An object is accelerating when;
1. it is travelling in one direction
with changing speed (either
speeding up or slowing down),
2. moving at a constant speed but
changes its direction, and
An object is accelerating when;
3. when it changes both the speed
and its direction.
In other words, acceleration is the
rate of change in velocity. Slowing
down is called deceleration.
The SI unit of acceleration is meters per
second per second (m/s/s) or it can be
mathematically simplified to meters per
second squared (m/s2) but other units of
acceleration such as kilometers per hour
per hour (km/h/h or km/h2) and miles per
hour per hour (mi/h/h or mi/h2) are
sometimes used.
As an equation, acceleration is shown
as;

as;
1. A pilot decreases the landing
speed from 70 m/s to 7 m/s in 30
seconds. What was the
acceleration of the plane?
2. An eagle accelerates from 15
m/s to 22 m/s in 4 seconds. What is
the eagle’s average acceleration?
3. A poorly tuned Geo can
accelerate from rest to a velocity of
28 m/s in 20 seconds. What is the
Geo’s acceleration?
4. A minivan goes from zero to 55
km/h in 12 seconds. Calculate its
acceleration.
5. A horse running at 12 m/s
accelerates to 38 m/s in 10
seconds. What is the horse’s
acceleration?
6. A car accelerates from an initial
velocity of 3 m/s to a final velocity
of 11 m/s in a time of 4 seconds.
Calculate its acceleration.
7. A truck has an initial velocity of 22 m/s.
Over a time interval of 3 seconds, its velocity
decreases to 13 m/s. Calculate the
acceleration.
8. Dumbo needs to slow down so that he
won’t crash into an oncoming tree. He’s
going at a speed of 50 m/s and came to a
stop. It took him 4 seconds to stop. What was
his rate of acceleration?
