End AWS Lambda Cold Starts with Provisioned ConcurrencyJulian Wood
This document discusses AWS Lambda cold starts and introduces AWS Lambda Provisioned Concurrency. It begins with a primer on cold starts and concurrency for Lambda functions. It then explains that cold starts occur when new execution environments are needed to handle requests. This can lead to latency variations from under 100ms to over 1 second. The document then introduces AWS Lambda Provisioned Concurrency, which pre-creates execution environments to reduce cold start times. With provisioned concurrency, execution environments are fully initialized so invocation times are under 100ms. It provides improved latency consistency for interactive workloads.
Amazon EventBridge: AWS re:Invent Serverless London Recap DayJulian Wood
Amazon EventBridge is a fully managed event bus service that can integrate third party software-as-a-service (SaaS) providers and 90+ AWS services as sources, and route events to 17 AWS services as targets. It then defines serverless as user-defined functions that are event-triggered, automatically spun up and down on demand, and fully managed by the cloud provider. It discusses key aspects like statelessness, programming languages supported, pricing based on execution time, and compares serverless to PaaS and containers. It outlines benefits like reduced costs and management overhead, and disadvantages around performance, security, and limited control. It also provides examples of serverless use cases and integrated cloud services.
UKVMUG 2016 - Demystifying the Future of IT, an IT practitioners guideJulian Wood
This document appears to be the slides from a presentation on the future of IT and multi-cloud strategies. Some key points summarized:
- IT is changing rapidly with new technologies like containers, serverless computing, and the rise of multi-cloud environments. Simplicity should be a goal when managing infrastructure across private and public clouds.
- Multi-cloud strategies allow using the best cloud for each workload and reduce vendor lock-in. However, they also increase complexity around integration, security, and billing across different cloud platforms.
- Adopting a DevOps approach and treating infrastructure as code can help manage complexity when deploying applications across multiple cloud environments. Microservices architectures and containers are also well-suited

The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
What to expect
For the upcoming meetup we are organizing, we have an exciting lineup of activities planned:
-Insightful presentations covering two practical applications of the Power Grid Model.
-An update on the latest advancements in Power Grid -Model technology during the first and second quarters of 2024.
-An interactive brainstorming session to discuss and propose new feature requests.
