This document summarizes a presentation on how Portuguese writer Ferreira de Castro depicted nature and the environment in his novels through the use of introductory texts called "Pórticos". It analyzes six such Pórticos that picture Portuguese and Brazilian landscapes and reflect concepts of ecology and human ecology. The Pórticos set scenes in rural areas and describe human relationships with the land and natural resources through concepts like habitat, land use, adaptation, resistance, and survival. They illustrate classical ecology through ecosystems and communities as well as human ecology through human groups, exploitation of resources, and adaptation.
