From the Desk of the Transition Services Manager
Patrick W. Bean, SR.
Together Everyone Achieves More (TEAM) and transitioning from military services requires a TEAM effort.
ACAP centers continue to be team players for Soldiers transitioning to civilian employment, continuing
education, franchising opportunities, or other entrepreneurial opportunities in our communities. Regard-
less of the professional direction an individual chooses, ACAP will assist Soldiers, Veterans, and family
member in this quest. Although transition can be a challenging time and stressful for Soldiers and family
members, the success of their endeavors lie in attitudes toward the next goal.
Zig Ziglar once said, “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” I believe a transition-
ing Soldiers success lies in their attitude toward achieving that success. ACAP will provide transitioning
personnel with enormous amounts of transition services to ensure the Soldier has all the tools for suc-
cessful career transition. I challenge all leaders at all levels to reengage our transition program in our
units, assess compliance, and involve yourself in the cycle of achievement of successful career transition
of your Soldiers and their family.
I welcome leadership to visit Fort Stewart ACAP offices to witness transition training provided to your sol-
diers, engage in conversation with Soldiers about their Individual Transition Program and to verify his/her
progress toward seeking alternatives to resolve gaps in their skills assessment. These are vital parts of
career readiness and successful employment, university or college acceptance, or successful franchise or
small business opportunity.
Lastly, your Soldiers have contributed to your mission’s success. You can contribute to your Soldiers’ fu-
ture success by promoting ACAP. Annually, thousands of Soldiers decide to reenlist. ACAP helps individu-
als to compare the benefits of reenlistment with what they can do in the private sector. ACAP supports
both AC and RC recruiting. ACAP can help the Army prevent unemployment compensation costs by prepar-
ing transitioning Soldiers for employment. Our veterans and retirees are our Army Ambassadors who can
help Army recruiting. How we treat them as they leave active duty will determine what they tell potential
recruits. Army training and experience prepares veterans and retirees to succeed in meaningful jobs. Our
national and public welfare depends on our transitioning Soldiers to strengthen our communities and
economy.
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN RELOCATING TO VIRGINIA?
Are you interested in living in Virginia once you separate from the military?
If you answered yes, the resources and information in this newsletter will be of interest
to you.
To search for employment in Virginia, start by visiting the webpage for the Virginia
Workforce Connection, www.VAWorkConnect.com.
This webpage allows job seekers to search for employment, access career tools, locate
job fairs, search high-demand employment opportunities and also access veteran’s infor-
mation. To access a wide variety of Veteran Services information for the state of Virginia,
please click here.
The Virginia Workforce Connection also provides FREE career guidance services which
can aid in your transition to civilian life. You can find these resources and services on
www.VAWorkConnect.com webpage.
You may also want to visit, www.indeed.com and www.usajobs.gov. Indeed is a
phenomenal webpage that allows you to search by location and job criteria. Indeed is a
crucial website to use because it serves as an aggregator of other large and small job
boards depending on the location of the search. Please visit Indeed by clicking here.
USAJOBS.GOV is the webpage where all Federal jobs are posted. If you are interested
in working for the Federal government, please visit www.usajobs.gov.
Will you be relocating with your family? You and your spouse may want to research
Washington State school districts. Start your research by visiting the Virginia Department
of Education webpage.
Please contact your ACAP counselor if you need assistance with navigating
these web pages. We look forward to helping you!
Which blunders will send your resume straight into oblivion? There might be doz-
ens, depending on the job, but experts say these five common resume mistakes are
most likely to derail your job search.
1. Your Age– This is a question that is illegal for hiring managers to ask. Also,
please remove statements such as “Senior accountant with more than 25 years of
experience__________”. This type of data invites age discrimination.
2. Lists of Tasks or Duties without Results– Your resume has to go beyond say-
ing which jobs you’ve done. It must establish what you’ve accomplished in those
jobs. Many applicants miss this key distinction.
3. Explanations of Anything Negative- Everyone has dark stories in their past.
There’s no place for them on your resume. Your resume is a promotional docu-
ment and all promotional documents need to be positive”, said Teddy Burriss, a
career counselor and outplacement consultant in Winston-Salem, N.C.
4. A List of Every Job You’ve Every Held- Hiring managers don't want to know
about that summer you worked as a lifeguard -- unless you're applying to manage
the park district's pool. "Recruiters and hiring managers are looking for relevance
and stability," Burriss said. The key is to list the work you've done in the past 10 to
15 years that tells an employer you're a skilled, reliable fit for the job.
5. Personal Details- Employers usually don't care about your marital status, race,
sexual orientation or hobbies, unless they are somehow pivotal to the job. Includ-
ing personal data is a rookie mistake, and nobody wants to hire a rookie.

  • 3. Which blunders will send your resume straight into oblivion? There might be doz- ens, depending on the job, but experts say these five common resume mistakes are most likely to derail your job search. 1. Your Age– This is a question that is illegal for hiring managers to ask. Also, please remove statements such as “Senior accountant with more than 25 years of experience__________”. This type of data invites age discrimination. 2. Lists of Tasks or Duties without Results– Your resume has to go beyond say- ing which jobs you’ve done. It must establish what you’ve accomplished in those jobs. Many applicants miss this key distinction. 3. Explanations of Anything Negative- Everyone has dark stories in their past. There’s no place for them on your resume. Your resume is a promotional docu- ment and all promotional documents need to be positive”, said Teddy Burriss, a career counselor and outplacement consultant in Winston-Salem, N.C. 4. A List of Every Job You’ve Every Held- Hiring managers don't want to know about that summer you worked as a lifeguard -- unless you're applying to manage the park district's pool. "Recruiters and hiring managers are looking for relevance and stability," Burriss said. The key is to list the work you've done in the past 10 to 15 years that tells an employer you're a skilled, reliable fit for the job. 5. Personal Details- Employers usually don't care about your marital status, race, sexual orientation or hobbies, unless they are somehow pivotal to the job. Includ- ing personal data is a rookie mistake, and nobody wants to hire a rookie. By: Tom Mangan- Monster Contributing Writer 5 Things You Should Never Put on Your Resume Did You Know?
