3rd Grade Stanford 10 Reading Results
What the results say… The 3rd grade scores on the Stanford 10 standardized test have been steadily decreasing from 2008 to the present Similar to other schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore, the school’s enrollment has also decreased.
School Year 2010-2011 Focus for Elementary Grade Teachers Academic Excellence in the Elementary School Reading Program Review the current Reading Program Raise the Reading Scores
Reading Comprehension Strategies  Teach students different types of questions Show students text clues in inferential questions Activate prior knowledge before reading Instuct students to ask questions before, during, and after reading Compare and contrast texts by the same author
Word Identification Strategies Reinforce sight vocabulary during read alouds Teach words difficult to decode in context Instruct students to reread difficult words Teach students to identify word chunks Teach students to identify beginning and ending sounds Teach students to blend sounds Instruct students to use pictures to identify unknown words
Phonics Instruction  Pre-Kindergarten through first grade teach phonics as a separate discipline Follow phonics lesson plans in their entirety 2nd through 4th grade teach phonics as integrated with reading instruction using the chosen reading textbook series and novels
Evaluating Student Reading Levels Student reading levels will be assessed three times per year using the IRI Initially in the first month of school After the mid year point End of the school year
IRI Assessment Guidelines for Teachers Testing must occur in a quiet place, free of distractions Use different versions of the test for each administration Follow instructions in IRI administration book Be familiar with the coding rules used with the IRI Students may not look back in the test  Students may not be assisted in any way on the test
Conclusions Teachers in the Elementary School need to work together and communicate regularly to ensure continuity in the reading program across the grade levels. By focusing on the reading program and enhancing reading instruction, the school should see improvement in the standardized test scores.

  • 10. Conclusions Teachers in the Elementary School need to work together and communicate regularly to ensure continuity in the reading program across the grade levels. By focusing on the reading program and enhancing reading instruction, the school should see improvement in the standardized test scores.
