This document outlines the points of departure and concepts for research into how we deal with private energy consumption. It proposes moving beyond simplistic framings of consumption and exploring the spaces between misleading dualisms like rational/irrational. The research will take a relational approach, viewing consumption as integral to relating to people and things. Several unchartered research sites are proposed that look at the relations between energy, pleasure, and aesthetics in areas like bathing, second homes, sports, and industrial design. Input is welcomed on this transdisciplinary challenge.
