A computer-based system is designed to assist manufacturing industries in the make or buy decision, which is arguably the most fundamental component of manufacturing strategy. A model of make or buy decision was developed through review of literature and discussion with industry people. The system employs both case-based reasoning (CBR) and decision support system components. As part of the development process, interviews were conducted with managers in valve manufacturing industry in order to determine current make or buy practice and elicit opinions on how the decision-making process would be enhanced. The model consists of various checks as technology, capacity, sorting of parts by cost in descending and allocating capacity for parts which give maximum cost saving as first. A Knowledge Based System (KBS) was developed which incorporates these checks into the make buy decision. This system is used for analysis of capacity of machine used and idle capacity remaining for better performance of the industry. Expert system developed is also used to take decision about a new part /product to be manufactured inhouse or bought outside and save the time in decision making

The perceptible impact of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) lies in raising productivity standards, gaining profitability, and improving the quality besides cutting down the non value added costs greatly. This paper is an attempt to provide a frame work and pragmatic approach in implementation of TPM. A number of novel success factors or practices that are responsible for the decisive role to overture the process are identified. These practices are interchangeably called as sub-attributes. These practices must have evolved from different strategies. The sub-attributes are quantified using least square multi attribute decision model (LSMADM) for three alternatives strategies viz. corrective maintenance, reliability centered maintenance(RCM), and TPM. Any sub-attribute irrespective of its own high or low relative score among the number of sub attributes is evaluated over three alternative strategies. To implement any sub-attribute, an investigation of its highest relative score for given alternatives will guide the managers to opt the best alternative. The best practices must come from different strategies to get most optimal results. The priorities established using LSMADM will act as base line to implement the industrial activities in a more systematic and balanced way to gain far-reaching optimized productivity and quality standards. The higher priority task will be given higher consideration in terms of committing the resources vis a vis less priority task. This will aid in orienting the collective efforts for optimal outcomes.

The case study details the situation faced by Emerging Market Projects Department of Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions India (RBEI), India in January 2014. RBEI, one of the Bosch group's subsidiaries in India, was established in 1998 at Bangalore, India. In 2004, RBEI had been tasked with designing and engineering mechatronic automotive products tailored specifically to meet the needs of emerging economies. The caselet intends to introduce the participants/students to the concept and importance of measurement and scaling in carrying out a marketing research project. In February 2015, Arun Prasad (Arun), a BBM (Bachelor of Business Management) graduate with distinction started an experiential and customer-centric bakery, Chennai Bakers, in Nungambakkam, Chennai. Based on his award-winning business plan and with encouragement from his Professor, friends and family, Arun had established Chennai Bakers' dealing in cakes, pastries, sandwiches, cookies, fruit juices and hot beverages like coffee and tea. For the first few months, the sales were very promising. However, the last two months' (July and August 2015) suddenly sales were plummeting at Chennai Bakers. A good friend, Raghu Ram, advised him to prepare a questionnaire to collect customer feedback. Arun prepared a questionnaire containing just six questions. After having collected the feedback from select customers, Arun was not sure how to process the data to arrive at appropriate conclusions. When Arun met Professor Francis Xavier (Prof. Xavier) and shared his dilemma, he stated categorically that the measurements and scales were not apt and the feedback exercise must be implemented all over again with appropriate measurements and scales. However, Arun required Prof. Xavier’s help in this regard, to achieve apposite conclusions.

Siddarth Ray (Ray) established Ray Tech Pvt. Ltd. (Ray Tech) in January 2011. The company designed a software for doctors and clinics to store, access (from anywhere) and share healthcare records with other doctors. The company also launched a website through which patients can search for doctors and book appointments. However, the company’s projects were getting delayed on a regular basis. The management found lack of cooperation and coordination between the technical team and the marketing team. In order to motivate the two teams to work in sync with each other, Ray Tech’s management decided to go for an organization-wide incentive plan using the Scanlon Benefit Sharing Formula.
