Food is everywhere. It's an essential part of our daily lives, and has wide-ranging implications for our health and well-being, for the economy, for national and global politics, for the environment, for innovation and technology, for science and agriculture, for our cultural identity, and most importantly, for our long-term survival.
Food Studies at The New School draws on a range of disciplines to explore the connections between food and the environment, politics, history, and culture. Our faculty of culinary historians, policy activists, entrepreneurs, and scientists provides students with the theoretical and practical tools they need to engage in the developing global conversation about food production, distribution, and quality and influence positive change in their own food environments. – New SchoolFood Studies emphasizes the ways individuals, communities, and societies relate to and represent food within a spatial, cultural and historical context. It examines the political, economic, and geographic framework of food production, along with attention to the problems that follow. – Food Studies @ NYU
“something for everyone” – fun, controversial, etcTopics: *Health– nutrition, GMOs, food safety, *Culture – Where/what/when/why/how we eat, with who, symbolism, rules*Environment – Politics – Technology – Economics – food prices, fair trade, organic, subsidiesOther topics:Food justice, conservation, food waste, history, culinary/recipes, marketing/advertising, local vs global systems, food production/distribution,etcPrimary Concerns: For most people, we’ve found that what it all comes down to one (seemingly) simple question: What do I eat? How does this all affect ME!? That’s exactly why we will focus on sharing, discussing, and challenging each others ideas because fundamentally, food is personal , and we want this experience to embrace that.
Just a sample of the food system & all the players.Global issues/Concerns: GMOS, pesticides, control over what’s going into your food and where it comes fromWith this many components, there are also this many perspectives and backgrounds within the conversations about the food system. We aim to include everyone!
