Exam Practise
Monday 3rd February 2014
Unit G322: Key Concepts Exam
2. Aims & Objectives
Why?
• Re-cap prior learning of areas we have
covered in previous Section B: Film
Industry (50 Marks) lessons
• To gain a better understanding of how
Digital media technology has impacted
Institutions (Studios) and Audiences.
• See what impact these developments
have had on the case studies we have
analysed.
• Review the learning
So YOU are
prepared and
ready for the
exam on May
23rd and the
Mock Exam on
February 7th
3.
4. What have they done to ensure they stay dominant in the face of Digital Media advances?
6. • Use your exercise books
• Use the resources from the Blog –
http://ncrafts.wordpress.com/
• Find examples that matter and are relevant!
YOU MUST find ONE example of a “development” that is relevant to the case study
below.
7. Vs.
‘Taken 2’
(2012 – EuropaCorp/20th Century
Fox)
‘The Angel’s Share’
(2012 – Sixteen Films)
Key areas for the exam:
• COMPARE!
• Learn and apply facts and figures in relation to EACH film – Compare the differences as well!
• Make sure your evidence is relevant and linked back to the question.
• Refer to ‘Man of Steel’ (2013 – Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures) and ‘A Field in England’
(2013 – Film Four) as well!
8. YOU MUST work in pairs to complete the following in relation to the question above:
• What developments have there been?
Research and find examples of the impact DVD sales, Blu-Ray, VOD, 3D Technology and
advances in the cinematic experience have had on the film experience.
• What digital media in particular has impacted the PDME of the 2 case study examples –
‘Taken 2’ (2012) and ‘The Angels Share’ (2012)
e.g Blanket release of ‘Taken 2’ at over 3,000 cinemas in the US, many of which would
have exhibited the film in 2D, 3D and potentially IMAX formats. However ‘The Angels
Share’ (2012)…..
• “Media institutions and audiences” - Look at your cross comparison handout –
HOW have advances in digital media impacted the success/failure of the 2 films and why?
9. Feedback – some examples
• Heavily marketed across the e-media
platform (Internet) through video sharing
(How many million views?) and social
media (How many million likes?)
• Synergy and Product placement deal with
Apple to promote the new iPhone 5 –
Figure is unknown but they paid $23m to
present in ‘Mission Impossible: Ghost
Protocol’ (2011 – Paramount) –
What is the long term goal for both the studio
and Apple? Clue: VOD
• Very quick release onto DVD – 16 Weeks
after release – resulting in $30m in sales 68% of the Production budget alone.
• Similar reliance on social media to
promote the film – WHY?
• VOD - Synergy with Sky to exhibit the
film on it’s Sky Go On Demand service,
as well as IFC Films On Demand.
• Shot on 35mm instead of Digital –
Did this impact the appeal/release of the
film? How many screens was it shown in?
What other films was it up against in the
UK at the time of release?
10. Ken Loach (Director of ‘The Angels Share’ – 2012 - has:
“.. lambasted the ‘colonising’ of our cinemas by American product
and called for the public ownership of cinemas which were
programmed by film lovers and not ‘by people who care about fast
food’. – Is he a fan of the changes to Film Exhibition?
“Ken (Loach) shoots on film, he edits on film – he’s one of the few directors
that do”
13. Examples of Statistics/facts/examples that tie into the Question:
YOU SHOULD “name drop” an example of a Free download website to back-up
your understanding of the threat this is causing some of the major studios.
14. Your own Case study/Examples –
HOW has digital media impacted the Film Industry?
RESEARCH!
15. Plan your answer
From the work you have completed today, YOU MUST plan how you would answer this
question using the case study material you have found and collected together.
YOU SHOULD then complete your answer in no longer than 45-50 minutes so you are
getting a realistic experience of how to effectively manage your time for the exam.
16. Review the learning
YOU MUST write down 1 example you would use
for EACH film should you get a question like this.
Extension – YOU COULD give more than 1 example
