A TIUMPH OF SURGERY
(The Footprint without feet)
Author
(James Herriot)
โ€“ James Herriot is the pen name of James Alfred Wight, OBE, FRCVS also known as Alf Wight, an English
veterinary surgeon and writer. Wight is best known for his semi-autobiographical stories, often referred to
collectively as All Creatures Great and Small, a title used in some editions and in film and television
adaptations.
In 1939, at the age of 23, he qualified as a veterinary surgeon with Glasgow Veterinary College. In January
1940, he took a brief job at a veterinary practice in Sunderland, but moved in July to work in a rural
practice based in the town of Thirsk, Yorkshire, close to the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, where
he was to remain for the rest of his life. The original practice is now a museum, "The World of James
Herriot".
Summary
โ€“ The story starts when Mrs. Pumphrey, a rich lady takes her dog out for a walk. A nearby veterinary doctor who knows the lady sees the dog and
is shocked as he sees that the dog looks like a bloated sausage with a leg at each end. He advises her to stop giving him unhealthy things to eat
but Mrs. Pumphrey is not able to refuse him. Soon he falls sick and the doctor is called. The narrator, Mr. Herriot then somehow takes Tricki,
the dog to the hospital even though he knows that Mrs. Pumphrey is not ready to leave her dog and nearly fainted just by hearing these words.
Then he takes the dog along and puts a bed for him in his surgery. The dog doesn't move much nor eats anything for the first two days. On the
second day he looks around and whimpers a bit. He wanted to go out on the third day and started playing with the bigger dogs when he was
taken out. He also licked the bowls of other dogs clean on the third day.
SUMMARY
Then his condition started improving very fast. He started fighting for his meals with other dogs. Then when this news reached Mrs. Pumphrey, she started
sending him eggs as she thought that Tricki was recovering from an illness and needed energy foods. Mr. Herriot and his partners started eating those eggs
for morning breakfast. Then for improving Trickiโ€™s blood, Mrs. Pumphrey started sending in bottles of wine which was again consumed by Mr. Herriot. He
used to take two glasses before lunch and some more glasses while having his lunch. Then when she started sending in bottles of brandy for Tricki that was
the time when Mr. Herriot thought that he would really like to keep Tricki as a permanent guest in the surgery. Mr. Herriot used to be really happy
someday by having two extra eggs every morning. Then having few glasses of wine in the afternoon and closing the day by having brandy at night. But
then he took a wise decision and called up Mrs. Pumphrey as she was really worried and on this side Tricki was ready to be taken back home. Tricki was
really happy to see his mistress and jumped into the car. Mrs. Pumphrey said that she won't be able to ever thank him for what he had done and also, that
his surgery had been successful as Tricki was now cured
Character Sketch
There are three main characters .
1.)Ms. Pumphrey
2.) Tricki
3.)Dr.James Heriot
Ms. Pumphrey
Mrs. Pumphrey was a rich lady who had a small pet dog named Tricki. She was foolishly
indulgent and would pamper the dog by giving him chocolates, cakes, juice, eggs and wine. She
was ignorant and did not know that the dog needed exercise also. So when he fell sick she was
very anxious and thought that something very serious had happened to him. She was silly but
tender hearted. She cried bitterly when Tricki was taken to the hospital. She was a simple person
and it was easy to please her. She was happy when her pet became alright. She was grateful to Dr.
Harriot for making Tricki healthy. She went to the extent of calling it a 'Triumph of Surgery'. So
we can say that Mrs. Pumphrey was a rich, foolishly indulgent, ignorant, anxious, silly, tender
hearted, simple, easy to please, and a grateful person.
Tricki
Tricki was a dachshund dog who had been pampered to such an extent that overfeeding, luxuries, and facilities became the cause of his illness.
He became so fat that he could not walk properly. The narrator, who was a vet, lived in Mrs. Pumphreyโ€™ s neighbourhood; he saw Trickiโ€™s
condition deteriorate regularly. He suggested to Mrs. Pumphrey to follow strict regimen for Tricki, but Mrs. Pumphrey did not pay much
attention to it.
One day Tricki stopped eating even his favorite dishes. He just lay listlessly on the floor. The narrator was called; he suggested Tricki needed
hospitalization. Actually he had a special plan for him to make him well.
At his hospital, he kept Tricki on strict diet. He gave him plenty of water to drink. In the company of other dogs, Tricki began moving and
playing with them. Within a few days Tricki improved. The narrator did not give any food and wine to Tricki that Mrs. Pumphrey sent everyday
for him.
After a fortnight Tricki became normal and healthy and Mrs. Pumphrey thought the narrator had done some surgery on Tricki.
Dr.James Heriot
Mr Herriot is a veterinary doctor. He is very kind and gentle
with animals. When he sees the condition of Tricki, he is
worried. He warns the dog's mistress of the consequences of
over feeding the dog but she loves the dog so much that she
can't change her ways. Mr Herriot's kindness and
compassion compels him to do something for the dog. He
admits the dog in his clinic and gives him proper food and
enough exercise to help him get back in shape. Here we see
Mr Herriot's determination to help the animals. We can easily
say that Mr Herriot is the good neighbourly doctor we all wish
to have.
Mrs Pumphrey thought that the dog's recovery was โ€œa triumph of surgeryโ€ because in
two weeks, Tricki had recovered completely and had been transformed into a hard-
muscled animal. ... She declared Tricki's recovery as a triumph of surgery to express
her happiness and gratitude towards the doctor.
Point of view
Thank you
