- 6. Stats • According to the National Center for Educational, difficulties with basic reading and language skills are the most common learning disabilities. As many as 80% of students with LD have their problems in reading. • The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)* found that approximately 38% of fourth grade students have "below basic" reading skills and are at greater than 50% chance of failing the high-stakes, year- end school achievement tests.

- Today, I am going to discuss Assistive Technology solutions for our school. In particular I am going to discuss to program that will address a wide range of students’ needs.
- Here is a brief summary of what I will discuss in this presentation
- First, lets review the definition of Assistive technology and how the implementation of these programs will assist our students.
- Just a couple of statisitics about how reading/language are important and reading is the foundation of ……
- Studies continue to show the sooner we address the learning issues, the better for the student and the schools. Up front cost now will help reduce much more substantial costs in the future.

- Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1997 and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, people with learning disabilities of all ages are protected against discrimination and are entitled to accommodations in the classroom and workplace Under the law, public school system is required to provide the “least restrictive” enviorment for students with special needs. The cost of the total program $299.00 Unfortunately, reading failure is disproportionately prevalent among children living in poverty. In many low-income urban school districts the percentage of students in the fourth grade who cannot read at basic level approaches 70%.
