Teenage pregnancy is pregnancy in human females under the age of 20. A pregnancy can take place after the start of puberty before the first menstrual period but usually occurs after the onset. In well-nourished girls, menarche usually takes place around the age of 12 or 13.
Pregnant teenagers face many of the same obstetrics issues as other women. There are, however, additional medical concerns for mothers aged below 15 years of age. For mothers aged 15–19, risks are associated more with socioeconomic factors than with the biological effects of age. Risks of low birth weight, premature labor, anemia, and pre-eclampsia are connected to the biological age itself, as it was observed in teen births even after controlling for other risk factors (such as utilization of antenatal care etc.).
In developed countries, teenage pregnancies are often associated with social issues, including lower educational levels, higher rates of poverty, and other poorer life outcomes in children of teenage mothers. Teenage pregnancy in developed countries is usually outside of marriage, and carries a social stigma in many communities and cultures. By contrast, teenage parents in developing countries are often married, and their pregnancies welcomed by family and society. However, in these societies, early pregnancy may combine with malnutrition and poor health care to cause medical problems.
Teenage pregnancies appear to be preventable by comprehensive sex education and access to birth control. Abstinence-only sex education does not appear to be effective.
Through generations teenage pregnancy has converted into one of the Philippines' most challenging social issues. Becoming pregnant at such an early age brings multiple obstacles such as, lower expectations of finishing high school, not attending college, and less success in the job industry. Not only do these obstacles regard the teenage parents but harm their unborn child in academic and health issues, for instance tending to score less optimally on assessments of cognitive development and academic achievement, and also tend to exhibit more problem behaviors than other children. Other than social dilemmas there are certain health issues that are more likely to appear in a teenage pregnancy for example the baby is more likely to have a low birth weight, to be born before term, and have developmental delay.
The issue we focus on is premarital sex among teenager that results to teenage pregnancy. Further explanation will be discussed in the parts to follow.

Factors that affect the Quality of Life of Patients with Behcet's DiseaseMinistry of Health
Objective: To assess the quality of life in patients with Behçet's disease, and to address the factors impact the domains of Quality of Life.
Methods: We surveyed101 patients with Behcet's disease no less than 3 months before the study. Data were collected using Short Form 36 Quality of life Scale. Results: The quality of life scores in patients with Behçet's disease were low and were adversely influenced by socio-demographic characteristics such as gender, age, work status and education status. Furthermore, disease manifestations such as oral and genital ulcerations, arthritis, and skin lesions affected the quality of life scores. Moreover, patients who experienced pain, poor sleep and fatigue lower the quality of life scale and patients whose social relations were influenced by the disease had significantly lower the quality of life scores. Conclusion: Patients with Behcet's disease reported a low level of quality of life.
Keywords: Behcet's disease, Factors affecting, Quality of life, Jordan.
Abstract—Sexual health (SH) and sexual behavior of young people have become a growing public concern. But few studies have been conducted to investigate the prevalence and psychosocial correlates of this phenomenon.
Purpose: To understand college students’ sexual knowledge (SK), sexual attitudes (SA), sexual desire (SD) and sexual behavior (SB).
Methods: A self-reported questionnaire survey on SK, SA, SD, and SB was conducted among 520 university students. Their demographic data, SK, SA, SD, and SB were assessed.
Results: A total of 500 students completed the questionnaire. The SKS total score had a mean of 23.05; 105 (21.0%) subjects had had premarital sex; 121 (24.2%) had a partner; 117 (23.4%) had a medical educational background. The results demonstrated an increased risk of premarital sex amongst males and subjects with the risk factors of smoking, drinking, having a partner, and having higher levels of SD and SK and more open SA.
Conclusions: This study provides support for the idea that university students lack SK (especially regarding contraception knowledge), even though the students had a medical educational background. Additionally, a considerable amount of them engaged in premarital SB. Our findings also suggest that university students need sex education, particularly in combining sexuality with their life, in relating to others maturely as a sexual individual, in employing contraception, and in preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Our study suggests that interventions aimed at expanding university students’ SK and other related skills are required.
Rethinking, rebuilding psychosocial care for cancer patientsJames Coyne
Presented as the 8th Trevor Anderson Psycho-Oncology Lecture, September 8, 2014, Melbourne, Australia.
Discusses how psychosocial care for cancer patients needs to be reorganized so that a broader range of cancer patients are served. Routine screening for distress is unlikely to be an efficient means of countering tendencies of cancer care more generally becoming more organized around time efficiency and billable procedures. Psychosocial care for many cancer patients involves discussions, negotiations, and care coordination they cannot be well fit into the idea of a counseling session. The unsung heroes of providing such care are underappreciated social workers and oncology nurses.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate tertiary student’s sexual behaviour and their knowledge and attitudes
towards STDs, among students of University for Development Studies (UDS).
The research design: data was collected by using a quantitative survey using self-answered questionnaire, from
a sample of one hundred and thirty-four (n=134) out of a total student population of 3,881, using the simple
random sampling technique in the data gathering process.
Results/findings: out of the sample size of 134 students aged 15-44, 46.3% were males and 53.7% were females.
About 24.6%, (n=33) have ever had sex without a condom. The study revealed that 99.3% ever heard of STDs,
85.1% had either below or average knowledge about the causes of STDs, 55.2% had knowledge above average
on the prevention of STDs and more than 90% of the student sampled indicated that STDs are very common.
Interestingly, 6.7% of the sampled population said STDs are mainly female infections.
Recommendations: There is need for wider education at various levels of the educational system on STDs by
health care providers, and effective collaboration among health care providers, social activists, NGOs and
tertiary students to promote peer education on STDs prevention among students.

Effects of community-based care on quality of life among adolescent and young...AJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT: Studies have been conducted on the Ebola virus epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa, but few have
looked at how community-based care affects the quality of life of adolescent and young adult Ebola survivors in
the Democratic Republic of Congo, the focus of our study. The study was carried out in eastern Democratic
Republic of the Congo's North-Kivu province using mixed method quasi-experimental study design. The study
was carried out after the Ebola outbreak of 2018-2020.Participants were 10 to 24-year-old Ebola Virus Disease
(EVD) adolescent and young adult survivors. Quantitative data was collected at the baseline and endline of the
intervention. After the intervention, there was a 13.03% improvement in quality of life. Compared to the baseline,
Ebola survivors had a 1.58 (p=0.036) higher likelihood of having a good quality of life. Difference-in-difference
estimator was also 1.89(p=0.036), indicating interaction. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that social
support 2.19 (p=0.04) and confusion 0.26 (p=0.001) were variables that influenced the quality of life among
adolescent and young adult Ebola survivors. The study demonstrated that the quality of life of adolescent and
young adult Ebola survivors is significantly improved by community-based care.

Flu Vaccine Alert in Bangalore Karnatakaaddon Scans
As flu season approaches, health officials in Bangalore, Karnataka, are urging residents to get their flu vaccinations. The seasonal flu, while common, can lead to severe health complications, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Dr. Vidisha Kumari, a leading epidemiologist in Bangalore, emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated. "The flu vaccine is our best defense against the influenza virus. It not only protects individuals but also helps prevent the spread of the virus in our communities," he says.
This year, the flu season is expected to coincide with a potential increase in other respiratory illnesses. The Karnataka Health Department has launched an awareness campaign highlighting the significance of flu vaccinations. They have set up multiple vaccination centers across Bangalore, making it convenient for residents to receive their shots.
To encourage widespread vaccination, the government is also collaborating with local schools, workplaces, and community centers to facilitate vaccination drives. Special attention is being given to ensuring that the vaccine is accessible to all, including marginalized communities who may have limited access to healthcare.
Residents are reminded that the flu vaccine is safe and effective. Common side effects are mild and may include soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or muscle aches. These side effects are generally short-lived and far less severe than the flu itself.
Healthcare providers are also stressing the importance of continuing COVID-19 precautions. Wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, and maintaining social distancing are still crucial, especially in crowded places.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by getting vaccinated. Together, we can help keep Bangalore healthy and safe this flu season. For more information on vaccination centers and schedules, residents can visit the Karnataka Health Department’s official website or follow their social media pages.

New Directions in Targeted Therapeutic Approaches for Older Adults With Mantl...i3 Health
i3 Health is pleased to make the speaker slides from this activity available for use as a non-accredited self-study or teaching resource.
This slide deck presented by Dr. Kami Maddocks, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Hematology and
Associate Division Director for Ambulatory Operations
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.
Target Audience
Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
Learning Objectives
1.) Identify clinical and biological prognostic factors that can guide treatment decision making for older adults with MCL
2.) Evaluate emerging data on targeted therapeutic approaches for treatment-naive and relapsed/refractory MCL and their applicability to older adults
3.) Assess mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies for MCL and their implications for treatment selection

I. Introduction:
Acne is a very common skin condition of the face and upper trunk affecting millions of adolescents
everyday [1]
. It is of great interest and importance to explore it further to elucidate possible associated factors
which may provide clues to its etiology.
The distribution of acne in populations has been shown to vary across gender [2-8]
, ethnicity [1, 9]
, socio-
demographic variables [8, 10]
, cigarette smoking [11, 12]
, diet [13, 14]
, mental health problems and may even be
associated with suicidal thoughts [15]
. These studies have helped us identify risk factors for the development of
acne and made us understand the burden this condition represents for young people. The importance acne may
have on the daily life of adolescents must not be trivialized, and it has been demonstrated that the quality of life
of acne patients is at the same level as patients with other chronic conditions such as asthma, epilepsy, diabetes,
back pain and arthritis [16]
.
Since acne is a visual disease and starts in adolescents, as does an increase in the prevalence of
depression and anxiety. It is particularly relevant to explore the way in which this skin condition is associated
with psycho-social factors. Adolescence is an important and vulnerable period in most people's lives as it is the
time of transition between the dependence of childhood to the independence of adulthood. There is, however,
conflicting evidence about a coexistence of acne and mental health problems: some studies have found an
association [17]
, while others have not been able to identify any. Isotretinoin therapy is used in the treatment of
severe or recalcitrant acne. Several case reports have raised concern over the increased incidence of depression
and suicide in patients receiving isotretinoin therapy [18]
.
II. Methodology:
Participants and study design:
The study population consisted of all the healthcare seeking individuals who attended skin OPD with
complaints of pimples and were sent for psychological evaluation after careful clinical examination. Consent of
the subjects were taken to evaluate the mood state using Beck’s Depression inventory19
and Hamilton’s anxiety
rating scale20
.
The results were analyzed by percentage methodology.

IV. Discussion:
According to study conducted by Burton JL et al2
among 1555 school children aged between 8-18 yrs,
comedones were present in a large population of even the youngest children and were universal by mid teens
and clinical acne appeared 2 yrs earlier in girls than in boys and the prevalence was reached at age of 14 years in
girls and 16 years in boys. There after the prevalence of more severe grades of acne continued to increase
steadily in boys but declined in girls. The age of menarche in girls didn’t effect the severity of acne which
ultimately developed. Our study too showed the prevalence to be more in the age group of 10-20 years
accounting to 76 percent.
Smithard A et al21
conducted a community based study regarding acne prevalence, knowledge about
acne and physiological morbidity in mid adolescence in which 317 pupils from a school in Nottingham aged 14-
16 years were examined. An age appropriate, validated measure of emotional well being, the Strength and
Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)22
and an Acne Management Questionnaire were used to assess participant
psychological health, level of acne knowledge and health seeking behavior. There was a prevalence of acne in
50% of study sample. Participants with definite acne (12+ lesions) (P <0.01) and girls (P <0.05) had higher
levels of emotional and behavioral difficulties. Patient with acne were nearly twice as likely as those without
acne to score in abnormal/borderline range of the SDQ (32% vs 20%; odds ratio 1.86; 95% confidence interval
1.03-3.34). Knowledge about the cause of acne was low (mean 45%) and was unrelated to acne status.
According to secondary analysis conducted by Purvis D et al15
of a cross sectional survey - Youth 2000
(New Zealand national survey of youth health). Among a total of 9567 secondary school students aged 12-18
years participated in the survey. The main outcome measures were self reported acne, depressive symptoms
(Reynold Adolescent Depression Scale >77)23
, anxiety (Anxiety Disorder Index from Multidimensional Anxiety
Scale for children)24
and self reported suicidal attempts. It revealed that ‘Problem Acne’ was associated with
increased probability of depressive symptoms with odds ratio 2.04 (95% confidence interval 1.7 - 2.45); anxiety,
odds ratio 2.3 (1.74 - 3.00) and suicidal attempts, odds ratio 1.83 (1.51-2.22) in a logistic model that included
age, gender, ethnicity, school decile and socio-economic status. The association of acne with suicidal attempts
remained after controlled for depressive symptoms and anxiety, with odds ratio 1.5 (1.21-1.86) and was
concluded that young people presenting with acne are at increased risk of depression, anxiety and suicidal
attempts.
Another study conducted by Saif Mutair Al Saedi Al Huzali et al17
to determine the prevalence of
depression among acne patients in King Faisal and King Abulaziz hospital in Makkah, Saudi Arabia in which
228 acne patients with their age ranged between 14 and 39 years (mean of 23.9 ± 5.7 years) were studied.
Among them more than half of the participants were females (56.1%). Depression regardless of its severity was
reported among 40.8% of acne patients. Severe depression was reported by 12.3% of acne patients while mild
and moderate depressions were reported by 16.2% and 12.3% respectively. Extremely severe depression was not
reported among any of acne patients. Age, gender and severity of acne were significantly associated with
depression and it was concluded that mental problems as an important factor in acne but the casual relationship
remains elusive.
V. Implication Of The Study:
The presence of acne can negatively affect quality of life, self esteem, and mood in adolescents. Acne
is associated with an increased incidence of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. The presence of these
and other comorbid psychological disorders should be considered in the treatment of acne patients when
appropriate. A strong physician patient relationship and thorough history taking may help to identify patients at
risk for the adverse psychological effects of acne. In addition to the effect of acne on the patient, family and
social relationships may also be strained. Parents may worry about the short and longterm repercussions of
their child’s appearance, such as being bullied at school or having permanent scarring from acne lesions. As
teens gain independence during adolescence, their attitudes toward treatment and adherence to the prescribed
regimen may be adversely affected. Parents and patients may not always be adequately educated about the
causes and treatment of acne, which may further delay or affect successful treatment. Poor adherence to
therapy is a barrier to successful acne treatment. Hence there is a need for a study to understand the link
between mood disorders and acne.
