This document proposes a smart prepaid energy metering system to control electricity theft. The system uses bidirectional communication between a smart energy meter installed in each consumer unit and a central server using GSM modules. Consumers can recharge their meters remotely by SMSing a PIN from a scratch card. The system aims to reduce electricity theft by incorporating measures to prevent meter bypassing and tampering, which are ensured by the bidirectional SMS communication.

Theft occurs through tampering with meters, bypassing meters, illegal wiring taps, and billing irregularities. Some common technical solutions to reduce theft include electronic tamper detection meters, pre-payment meters, plastic meter enclosures, anti-theft cabling, and using technologies like GSM and PLCs to monitor electricity distribution networks. Non-technical approaches also aim to increase accountability and enforcement of laws against electricity theft.
Power Theft Identification and Monitoring using GSM module
developed the system were we are using Arduino Atmega328 and current sensors and GSM module attached to every pole. The current sensor keeps the track of amount of current pass through it. When this supply reaches to other end of the pole than the current sensor available at pole 2 will measure the current receive and gives the reading to the Arduino Atmega328. Then the Arduino compares the current readings to the previous readings and if the supply is not approximately equal than the Atmega328 trigger the GSM module. Then the GSM module will send the SMS to the distributor that the amount of current received is not approximately equal and there is some illegal action occurred in the section from pole 1 to pole 2. This will help the distributor to overcome the losses and where the losses will be take place and the theft of the electricity

This technology holds good for all electricity distribution companies, private communities, IT parks and self-containing housing projects. The implementation of this project will help in better energy management, conservation of energy and also in doing away with the unnecessary hassles over incorrect billing. The automated billing system will keep track of the real time consumption and will leave little scope for disagreement on consumption and billing.It is observed that one of the faulty subsystems contributing to the huge revenue loss in Nigerian Power Sector is the metering and billing system. Errors get introduced at every stage of energy billing, like: errors with electro-mechanical meters, human errors while noting down the meter reading; and error while processing the paid bills and the due bills. The remedy for this drawback is a prepaid energy billing. There are clear results from many countries, where prepaid system has reduced the revenue loss by a large amount. A GSM-based Energy Recharge Interface which contains a prepaid card equivalent to a mobile SIM card. The prepaid card communicates with the power utility using GSM communication network. Once the prepaid card is out of balance, the consumer load is disconnected from the utility supply by the latching Relay (contactor). The power utility can recharge the prepaid card remotely through GSM/SMS mode base on customer requests. The results obtained shows good system performance. A prior billing is bound to do away with the problems of unpaid bills and human error in meter readings, thereby ensuring justified revenue for the utility

This paper proposes a hybrid wireless mesh network (WMN) architecture that allows the backbone to utilize random connections to access points (APs) in a wireless local area network (WLAN). Theoretical analysis shows that the capacity of a three-tier hybrid WMN is affected by the number of mesh router cells connected to APs, the ratio of access link bandwidth to backbone link bandwidth, and traffic balance among routers with AP access. Simulation results demonstrate that configuring APs and balancing traffic can significantly improve network capacity in the proposed hybrid architecture by taking advantage of wired connections through APs.

A SMART PREPAID ENERGY METERING SYSTEM TO CONTROL ELECTRICITY THEFT ABSTRACT: Power utilities in different countries especially in the developing ones are incurring huge losses due to electricity theft. This paper proposes a prepaid energy metering system to control electricity theft. In this system a smart energy meter is installed in every consumer unit and a server is maintained at the service provider side. Both the meter and the server are equipped with GSM module which facilitates bidirectional communication between the two ends using the existing GSM infrastructure. Consumers can easily recharge their energy meter by sending a PIN number hidden in a scratch card to the server using SMS. This paper presents some measures to control meter bypassing and tampering. The bidirectional GSM communication using SMS ensures the effectiveness of these measures. Pilferage of electricity can be substantially reduced by incorporating the proposed measures along with the prepaid metering scheme. Legal actions against dishonest consumers can also be taken in this system.
