magazine editor, illustrator, calligrapher, and music composer.
• Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts and authore
d several short stories and novels, primarily for young children and teenagers.
• Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955), won eleven international prizes, including th
e inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival.

Ray created two popular fictional characters in Bengali children's literature—Feluda,
a detective, and Professor Shonku, a scientist.

y it means respected uncle Tarini. Khuro in old colloquial Bengali me
ans paternal uncle. The full name of Tarini Khuro is Tarini Charan B
andopadhyay. Tarini khuro's adventure stories have a touch of super
natural forces in them. Ray's earlier creations were Feluda and Profes
