The Compassionate Film Series is a Mini-Series of 3
One-Hour broadcast slot TV documentaries related to
Tibetan Buddhism made for the international marketplace.
They have been developed by British film and television
Production Company Illumina Studios & Media Ltd with
Award Winning filmmakers, journalists and authors as
creative contributors.
The films can be shown by broadcasters in one
hour special TV slots on their own or together as
a series. All the films aim to highlight the ancient
and vibrant cultures, stories, traditions and wide
international interest in the subjects relating to Tibet
and Buddhism. The current market for television series
is strong and these films are intended to capitalise on
this trend.
The unrivalled access to some of the world’s leading
figures, including His Holiness Dalai Lama combined with
unique cultural content will be relevant and appealing to
a broad international audience. The telling of the stories
in the series represents the culmination of many years
of storytelling history and back stories and are to be
told on film for the first time with some of the worlds
leading talent.
The focus of these films is to be inspiring and educational
whilst providing a window into more compassionate
alternative world views with a basis in history and direct
relevance to the modern world. Illumina Studios and

NARRATER: Joanna Lumley
Joanna brings her open an inquisitive style to this film and
a natural connection to the material.

Joanna Lumley was born in Kashmir,
India, on 1st May 1946. Her father
was a major in the Gurkha Rifles, and
she spent most of her early childhood
in the Far East where her father
was posted.
An aspiring actress, she first came to
fame as a model in London’s swinging
1960s, where she was photographed
by the greats, including her friend,
the late Patrick Lichfield. She was
designer Jean Muir’s muse and house
model for several years before carving
a career as a freelance model where
she became one of the top ten most-
booked models of the 1960s.
Lumley’s breakthrough role was as
Purdey in Los nuevos vengadores
(1976), a role for which over 800 girls
auditioned. Purdey propelled Lumley
to instant fame and created one of the
“must-have” hairstyles of the 1970s
-- the Purdey bob. Lumley became a
pin-up figure for a generation of British
males who grew up watching her as
the high-kicking action girl.
Other roles followed, most notably as
Sapphire in Sapphire & Steel (1979)
opposite David McCallum -- a sci-fi
precursor to The X-Files (1993) and an
under-rated gem of a series which has
gained a cult following in recent years,
despite the fact it has only ever been
shown ONCE on terrestrial TV.
During the 1980s, Lumley returned
to the theater, making notable
appearances as “Hedda Gabler” and
as “Elvira” in “Blithe Spirit” -- a role that
seems tailor-made for her. Lumley also
made appearances in several films,
including Trail of the Pink Panther
(1982), Curse of the Pink Panther
(1983), and a screen-stealing role in
Shirley Valentine (1989).
It was her reinvention as a comic
actress in Absolutely Fabulous (1992)
that shot Lumley to wider international

acclaim. Her role as Patsy in
Absolutely Fabulous (1992) is regarded
as one of the greatest female comic
performances ever, earning Lumley a
stream of awards, including several
BAFTAs. Since Absolutely Fabulous
(1992), Lumley has cemented her
role as one of the UK’s most-loved &
respected actresses. She is rarely off
UK TV screens and has also built a
successful film career as a character/
voice-over actress.
She recently teamed up with the
writer/director Hugo Blick for the series
of acclaimed monologues Up in Town
(2002) which were critically regarded
as the performance of a lifetime, and
the recent Sensitive Skin (2005).
It has been announced that she will
be making a return to the stage for the
first time in over a decade in 2007 in
a new production of Anton Chekhov’s
“The Cherry Orchard” directed by Sir
Jonathan Miller.

Fifty-eight years after China’s Most
Wanted Man escaped from occupied
Tibet, this powerful documentary film
follows The Dalai Lama as he returns
to the Tibetan borderlands for the first
time to retrace his remarkable journey
and escape into exile in 1959.
One of the most significant moments
of 20th Century history, this is the
secret story of the Dalai Lama’s
journey into exile, told through
exclusive access to the Dalai Lama
and the previously unknown private
diary of the Indian high official who led
him to safety, Harmandar Singh.
The Dalai Lama’s escape from Tibet
sparked one of the greatest stories
of our time. As Tibetans descended
from the high Himalayan Plateau to
settle and gain asylum in countries
across the world, especially in India,
their refugee story highlights the
importance of compassion amongst
all peoples and nations.
Many Tibetans, including the Dalai
Lama, hope to peacefully return to
Tibet one day and the film asks the
question: what implicit lessons we can
learn from their story? Told through
interviews with those who were on
this historic journey, The Dalai Lama,
his younger brother, Tenzin Chogyal,
the Indian frontier Official, Harmandar
Singh and others the film also includes
profound wisdom and life advice from
the Dalai Lama himself.
The deep emotional and spiritual
experience of the Indian Official,
gained from spending three weeks
together with the Dalai Lama is
uncovered by Harmandar Singh’s
niece, journalist and ex-Eastenders
soap star Rani Singh, as she retraces
their epic 3-week journey of 1959.
Along with the Dalai Lama, she
revisits the Tibetan Border in the high
Himalayan mountains and travels
through ‘Tawang’, the 2nd Largest
Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the
world traveling over the ‘Se La Pass’ to
Harmandar Singh’s house in Bomdila
where he hosted the Dalai Lama
all those years ago. This culturally
significant story offers insights into the
importance of our shared worldwide
humanity and reveals the incredible
details of the Dalai Lama’s escape
into exile. Remarkably, this is the first
time that the story will have ever been
told on film!

Sitar player and composer Anoushka
Shankar is a singular figure in the Indian
classical and progressive world music
scenes. Her dynamic and spiritual
musicality has garnered several
prestigious accolades, including
six Grammy® Award nominations,
recognition as the youngest - and
first female - recipient of a British
House of Commons Shield, credit
as an Asian Hero by TIME Magazine,
and a Songlines Best Artist Award.
Most recently, she became one of the
first five female composers to have
been added to the UK A-level music
syllabus.
Deeply rooted in the Indian Classical
music tradition, Anoushka studied
exclusively from the age of nine under
her father and guru, the late Ravi
Shankar, and made her professional
debut as a classical sitarist at the
age of thirteen. By the age of 20, she
had made three classical recordings
for EMI/Angel and received her first
Grammy® nomination, thereby
becoming the first Indian female and
youngest-ever nominee in the World
Music category.
In 2005, Anoushka released her self-
produced breakthrough album Rise,
which earned her a second Grammy®
nomination. Following this nomination
Anoushka became the first Indian artist
to perform at the Grammy® Awards.
As an international solo sitarist
Anoushka has performed in a range of
distinguished venues such as Carnegie
Hall, Barbican Centre, Sydney Opera
House, Vienna Konzerthaus, Salle
Pleyel, Royal Festival Hall, Frankfurt
Alte Oper, Théâtre des Champs-
Elysées, Palais des Beaux-Arts, KKL
Luzern, Millenium Park (Chicago) and
San Francisco Opera House. Festival
appearances include Edinburgh,
Verbier, Prague Spring, Glastonbury,
Womad and the BBC Proms i
n London.
Anoushka has championed her
father’s four sitar Concertos with the
world’s leading orchestras including
the Berlin Philharmonic, London
Symphony, London Philharmonic,
New York Philharmonic and Los
Angeles Philharmonic Orchestras
under the leadership of esteemed
conductors such as Zubin Mehta.
Besides performing as a solo sitarist,
her compositional work has led to
cross-cultural collaborations with
artists such as Sting, M.I.A, Herbie
Hancock, Pepe Habichuela, Karsh
Kale, Rodrigo y Gabriela and Joshua
Bell demonstrating the versatility of the
sitar across musical genres.
In 2011 she signed to Deutsche
Grammophon heralding a fertile
creative period with a series of
exploratory CDs: Traveller (produced
by Javier Limon) examines the
relationship between Indian Classical
music and Spanish flamenco, Traces
of You (produced by Nitin Sawhney
and featuring Anoushka’s half-sister
Norah Jones on vocals), and Home,
a purely Indian Classical album where
she returned to the Ragas her father
had taught her. Her most recent
album Land of Gold was written in
response to the humanitarian trauma
of displaced people fleeing conflict
and poverty.
Her compositional work was recently
celebrated in a “Zeitinsel” at the
Dortmund Konzerthaus where she was
given carte-blanche to present four full-
length programmes reflecting different
aspects of her artistic life. She has
been commissioned by the British
Film Institute to write a full-length film
score to accompany the BFI National
Archive’s restoration of the 1928 silent

film Shiraz, specially commissioned
to mark the UK-India Year of Culture
2017. Recent highlights also include
curating a Tagore Festival at The
Globe Theatre in London dedicated
to the legendary Bengali polymath
Rabindranath Tagore. She is a
featured soloist and co-writer on Arijit’s
Singh’s latest feature film and performs
on the soundtrack to Stephen Frears’
film Victoria and Abdul.
The 2017/18 season sees the
premiere of a new programme with the
Zurich Chamber Orchestra featuring
orchestrations of her works by Jules
Buckley. “Shiraz” is premiered in a
live performance at the Barbican on
the opening night of the London Film
Festival which will be followed by a
tour of India.

her to the Philharmonie in Paris, LG
Arts Centre Seoul, Macao Cultural
Centre, WOMADelaide, WOMAD New
Zealand and the Sydney Opera House.
Anoushka’s artistic output increasingly
seeks to reflect her impassioned
support of women’s rights and social
justice. In response to the horrific
gang-rape of Jyoti Singh Pandey
in Delhi in 2011, Shankar threw her
weight behind the campaign One
Billion Rising on Change.org.
To support the campaign, she released
a video in which she demanded an end
to crime against women and revealed
she had been sexually abused for
many years as a child.
Following this, she was invited to take
part in a special panel on violence
against women at the annual Hindustan
Times Leadership Summit in New
Delhi (2013).
Other recent projects include hosting
a radio show about gender equality
to promote the United Nations
Sustainable Development Goals, and
coordinating a call-to-action to the
UK government in response to the
current European refugee crisis, which
was signed by more than 100 leading
British cultural figures and published
in a full-page advert in the Guardian
newspaper in September 2015.
She narrated “Stolen Innocence”
a documentary film about human
trafficking which is premiered in
autumn 2017.
Anoushka has authored a biographical
portrait of her father Bapi: The Love
of My Life, and has been a regular
columnist for New Delhi’s First City
magazine and the Hindustan Times.
Anoushka
is writing
an original
score for the film based on
her extensive experience
with Indian Classical music
with a modern twist.

Road to Happiness is the continuation of the Dalai Lama’s
astounding insights on Happiness and the human condition,
which includes his philosophy of peace and is something that
relates to all of us. If the one of the world’s greatest philosophers
and leaders, the Dalai Lama, is suggesting happiness is the real
meaning of life, what is the relationship between all of us and
happiness and how can we really create more happiness in our
everyday lives?

of disability and life lost as a result of depression will be greater
than that resulting from any other condition, including accidents,
war, suicide, cancer, and stroke.”~ Huffington Post
This film will put a mirror up to the world and ask: Are you really
happy and do you think the world is a happy place? The film will
offer practical solutions for individuals around the world to better
understand happiness and in so doing show how we can all make
valuable changes our lives – and the lives of our communities, to
become happier, more prosperous, and ultimately peaceful places
to live.
Sources of modern unhappiness range from increasing working
hours and stress, financial crises, discord amongst religious
and cultural beliefs, environmental disasters and the nightmare
of a global population explosion. Billions are struggling on an
endless treadmill chase, trying to ‘obtain’ what we all ultimately
want from life: Happiness. This film will explore how mass
media – generally the most powerful external influencer of
Western culture, portrays to us what we should fear and what
it thinks happiness should be by advertising fame, wealth
and celebrity.
During the powerful stories documented in Road to Happiness, we

advertising and Reality TV to show us the calm amidst the chaos
behind the scenes and lives of the worlds happiest people. We will
attempt to understand what really makes us happy and what do

everyone from world famous ‘happy monks’ from Tibet to
Hollywood Celebrities, comedians, TV personalities and delving
into the boardrooms of major corporations, we find out if there

The film we will seek out whether we can live a happy modern
lifestyle without abandoning everything to live without possessions
meditating in a remote hilltop cave and to answer the ultimate
question: how do we go about finding happiness? If it isn’t about
fame or being a multimillionaire, how can we apply the knowledge
of the world’s happiest people in our daily lives? By witnessing
their lives and exploring their thinking, we will be inspired to create

The documentary film RETURN TO
LADAKH follows Andrew Harvey, the
author, religious scholar and teacher
of mystic traditions as he returns to
the place that inspired his life-long
mission of ‘Sacred Activism’ in the
very same Monastery he began his
spiritual transformation over 30 years
ago. This was a transformation that
Harvey documented beautifully in his
first book and international best seller,
A Journey In Ladakh.
This is the story of the author’s return
to Ladakh to meet the reincarnation
of the revered Buddhist Master, His
Eminence Drukpa Thuksey Rinpoche,
who was his teacher in his last life
and who is now 29, living again and
in charge of the state of Ladakh,
which he governs courageously using
Buddhist principles. Offering profound
and powerful insights into Buddhist
culture, spiritual transformation and
beliefs in reincarnation, the film will
be a unique testament to the West
and serve as a wake up call to all
Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike

Born in Ladakh in 1986, His Eminence
Kyabje Thuksey Rinpoche was
recognised by H.H. 14th Dalai Lama
and H.H. 12th Gyalwang Drukpa as
the reincarnation of the first Kyabje
Thuksey Rinpoche – a prominent
figure in Himalayan Buddhism during
the last century. Today he governs
the region and possesses a precise
and potent message relevant for the
whole world.

above sea level on the borders of
China and Pakistan. Because it lies in

Illumina Studios & Media Ltd is
participating as chair and facilitator
of the Arts, Media, Design and
Architecture Group at the United
Nations Harmony With Nature
Programme in New York. The aim
of this innovative programme is to
harmonise worldwide awareness with
nature and to contribute to long lasting
social, political, legal and practical
changes necessary to protect nature
for future generations through the UN.
The programme has already
demonstrated its effectiveness and
has helped stimulate necessary legal
changes around the world aimed at
creating new constitutional laws to
protect nature. Some of these have
already been implemented in countries
including Brazil, USA, New Zealand,
India, Mexico, Bolivia, Sweden and
the UK.
Illumina Studios Director Jean-Paul
Mertinez participated in the United
Nations international dialogue
within the Arts, Media, Design and
Architecture panel that was launched
on Mother Earth Day 2016, the
dialogue is exploring ongoing ways
international experts can contribute to
earth centred world views, which were
taken to the UN General Assembly in
September 2016. The white paper
produced by over 127 experts in
diverse fields of environmental law,
ecological economics, education,
holistic science, humanities,
philosophy/ ethics, the arts, media,
design and architecture, theology
& spirituality became the keynote
address in the September 2016
UN General Assembly and helped
encourage the city of Mexico to
adopt the Rights of Nature in their
constitution in January 2017.
In April 2017 Jean-Paul presented at
the General Assembly of the United
Nations in New York on this subject,
highlighting the role of the arts, media,
design and architecture to promote
the Rights of Nature to international
NGOs and Member States. In addition
to this, Jean-Paul and indigenous
colleagues from Colombia met with the
current French Environment Minister
in Paris to determine how indigenous
understanding of ecology could inform
national policy.
All of these important initiatives are
being documented in new social
impact documentaries currently being
made by Illumina Studios & Media Ltd
and will serve as a reference on film
to the changing of world conditions
and the responses of civil and political
society to them.

Jean-Paul is a graduate of the National
Film & Television School, UK. He’s
worked with BBC Director Alan Ereira
since the beginning of the ALUNA film
project in 2010, the second film of the
secretive Kogi Indian tribe of the Sierra
Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia
(the sequel to the acclaimed BBC
film From The Heart Of The World:
The Elder Brother’s Warning). One
of the Mamas (Elders) in the film has
asked him to share their message of
hope and despair about the impact of
society on the environment around the
world as much as possible. He’s now
working on new international feature
film, television and live projects that
seek to express a truly sustainable
and compassionate worldview whilst
still being engaging and entertaining.
He was also involved within the
Organising Committee of the historic
London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic
Games. In 2016 he worked with the
United Nations on the “Harmony with
Nature” program that aims to align
human activity with nature.
Jean-Paul also produced the Migrate
Charity Auction for Refugees with
Christies (London) in October 2016
as a creative response to the Refugee
Crisis. In 2016 he worked with His
Holiness the Dalai Lama’s Grammy
Nominated Gyuto Monks during their
UK & Scotland “Pure Sound Tour”.
This included their performances at
the opening ceremony of Glastonbury
Festival in front of an audience of
around 100,000 people and recording
the historic visit on film. He was also
a lead venue project manager during
the successful London 2012 Olympic
& Paralympic Games in London.
In 2017, he’s spoken about Earth
Rights at the General Assembly of
the United Nations in New York and
currently has 3 documentary films at
different stages of production.

maximum annual investment
of £100,000.
Relief is given by way of a
reduction of tax liability, which
requires that there is sufficient
tax liability against which to
set it.
A claim for relief can be made
up to five years after the 31st
of January of the following tax

As with the EIS, a percentage (50% in the
case of SEIS) of the cost of an investment
can be claimed against the investor’s
income tax liability for the tax year in
which the investment was made.
The maximum investment through the
SEIS in any tax year is £100,000. As with
the EIS or there is no capital gains tax,
or inheritance tax to be paid on an SEIS
investment opportunity.
Income Tax Relief
The Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS) complements the EIS by offering a range of tax reliefs to individual
investors who purchase shares in smaller, early-stage companies. The SEIS is intended to compensate for the difficulties
faced by start-ups in attracting investment by offering tax relief at a higher rate than that offered by the existing EIS.

Capital Gains Tax Relief
If the investor has a Capital Gains Tax liability in the year of investment, then up to 50% of the amount
invested can be offset against that Capital Gain, with a potential saving of 10%, being half of 20% (14% for gains
on residential properties).
Income tax relief is available to investors who subscribe for qualifying shares in a company that meets
the SEIS requirements and who have UK tax liability against which to set the relief. However, there are
certain rules:

Who can Participate
in SEIS?
Unconnected shareholders should
be entitled to all the aforementioned
relief schemes. For connected
shareholders, income tax relief and
capital gains tax exemption are not
normally available.
‘Connection’ is defined by a financial
interest in, or employment by,
the company. Financial interest
occurs where the subscriber
and their associates (such as
parents, children and business
partners) control more than 30% of
the company.
Employment generally includes
directorships but precludes the
employment of associates, although
directors can participate in SEIS
companies if holding under 30%.
Furthermore, there is an exemption
for business angels who
become directors.

If a loss is made on the disposal of SEIS shares then the loss, less the 50% initial relief may be set against income or
capital gains for tax purposes.
SEIS investors can place a maximum of £100,000 in a single tax year,
which can be spread over a number of companies.
A company can raise no more than £150,000 in total via SEIS investment.
Investors have no control over companies that receive their capital and
must not hold more than a 30% stake in any company in which they invest.
Companies seeking investment must be based in the UK and have a
permanent base in the country.
Companies must have fewer than 25 employees. In the case of parent
companies, that figure applies to the entire group.
The company’s trade must be no more than two years old and the company
must have gross assets of less than £200,000.
Tax relief of 50% can be claimed in the current or previous tax year (from
date of share certificate).
A capital gains write-off of 50% of any gain can be claimed against the
current tax year.
No inheritance tax to be paid after two years.
No income tax or capital gain tax to be paid on any profits on disposal.
Loss relief on any monies lost can be claimed at current tax rate.
Monies must remain in the company for three years to benefit from
the above.
