1. A Day in the Navy
March 22, 2013
• The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS Klakring (FFG 42) is decommissioned at
Naval Station Mayport, Fla., after nearly 30 years of service.
• The amphibious transport dock ship Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) Arlington (LPD 24)
arrives at its new homeport of Naval Station Norfolk. Arlington was named for Arlington
County, Va., and honors first responders and the 184 victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attack
on the Pentagon.
• The Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group, including the multipurpose amphibious assault
ship USS Kearsarge (LHD 3), amphibious transport dock USS San Antonio (LPD 17)
and amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50), with embarked Marines
from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (26 MEU), conduct maritime security
operations and theater security cooperation while in the 6th Fleet area of responsibility.
• The guided-missile destroyer USS Stockdale (DDG 106) fires its 5-inch/54-caliber (MK
45) lightweight gun during a live fire exercise. Stockdale is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet
area of responsibility promoting maritime security operations, theater security
cooperation efforts and support missions for Operation Enduring Freedom.
• USNS Yukon (T-AO 202) is underway in the Pacific providing logistics support to USS
Freedom (LCS 1) on its maiden deployment.
• USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50) has replaced USNS Salvor (T-ARS 52) in the Sulu Sea
supporting salvage and dismantling operations for USS Guardian (MCM 5), which ran
aground on the Tubbataha Reef Jan. 17.
• Sailors assigned to Republic of Korea (ROK) Special Warfare Flotilla and SEAL Team
17 prepare to conduct a Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) during exercise Key
Resolve 2013. The exercise is designed to increase U.S.-ROK readiness, improve the
combined forces' operational capabilities, protect the region, and maintain stability on the
Korean Peninsula.
• Sailors from Maritime Civil Affairs and Security Training Command complete VBSS
training with members of the Republic of Congo and Gabon navies alongside Belgian
instructors on board the Belgian command and logistical support ship, BNS Godetia
(A960) as part of Africa Partnership Station.
• Seabees from Navy Mobile Construction Battalion 4 work together with members
of the Cameroon Battalion d'Intervention to complete construction of two community
health centers in the remote villages of Beskoul and Youhme, Cameroon, as part of
Africa Partnership Station.
• HSV 2 Swift is in Guatemala supporting Southern Partnership Station 2013.
2. • The submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) arrived in the Republic of the
Philippines for a scheduled port visit. This visit to Cebu is Frank Cable’s third port visit
since its recent departure from Guam, after an engagement with the Royal Malaysian
Navy in the port of Sepangar and repair work alongside the Los Angeles-class attack
submarine USS Albuquerque (SSN 706) in Sattahip, Thailand.
• Ohio-class submarine USS Ohio (SSGN 726) arrived at Subic Bay, Republic of the
Philippines for a visit as part of its deployment to the Western Pacific. With a crew of
approximately 150, Ohio is conducting missions and showcasing the latest capabilities of
the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet during this deployment.
• USNS 1st LT Jack Lummus (T-AK 3011) completed its cargo offload during exercise
Freedom Banner in the Philippines.
• An SH-60B Seahawk from the "Warlords" of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light
(HSL) 51 departs from the flight deck of Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer
USS Lassen (DDG 82).
• Recruits with the Federal Fire Department Firefighting Recruit Training Academy
prepare to enter a building during the final training evolution at the Mamala Bay training
area on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Recruits have undergone 22-weeks of training
and graduated today.
• Training Air Wing Five at Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Fla., pins 33 air warriors with
their "Wings of Gold." The newly designated aviators completed advanced rotary wing
training through one of the wing's three advanced helicopter training squadrons and will
now transfer out to the fleet for aircraft-specific training. Training Air Wing Five trains
100 percent of Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard helicopter pilots.
• Naval Station Norfolk hosts a Women’s History Month observance ceremony. This
year’s Women’s History Month theme is “Women Inspiring Innovation Through
Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics.”
• Sailors from Naval Weapons Station Earle conduct a cleanup of State Highway 34
adjacent to the Weapons Station while participating in the New Jersey Clean
Communities Program.
• Naval Air Station Key West fuels and liquid oxygen (LOX) team provides approximately
9,500 gallons of JP-5 aviation fuel and more than 100 gallons of LOX in support of the
NAS Key West Southernmost Air Spectacular, which included the Blue Angels.
Additionally, supply personnel provide local squadron performers Strike Fighter
Squadron (VFA-106) Gladiators and Fighter Squadron Composite (VFC-111) Sun
Downers with required support for the show.
• Recruiters help 30 people join America's Global Force for Good.
