A Day in the Navy

•   On January 10th, 331,331 Active Duty Officers, Sailors and Midshipmen; 121,723 Reserve
    Component Sailors, with 5,908 Reserves mobilized, and 185,559 civilians are serving in the
    Department of the Navy.

•   283 active ships are in service. 108 (38%) including 2 carriers and 3 large-deck, amphibious
    ships are underway.

•   8,755 Individual Augmentees, 4,229 of which are mobilized Reserves, are deployed on the
    ground around the world in support of the War on Terrorism.

•   USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), the final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, is commissioned in
    its initial homeport of Norfolk, Va. President George W. Bush and the ship’s namesake,
    George H.W. Bush, former president and naval aviator, provide remarks, as do Secretary of
    the Navy, Donald C. Winter and Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Gary Roughead.

•   USS San Antonio (LPD 17) serves as flagship for the newly formed Combined Task Force
    151, a multinational task force that conducts counter-piracy operations in and around the
    Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, in support of United Nations
    Security Council Resolution 1851.

•   U.S. Navy ships are part of Combined Task Force Iraqi Maritime and are providing maritime
    infrastructure protection, security and training on and around the Al Basrah and Khawr Al
    Amaya Oil Terminals while strengthening the Navy’s partnership with Iraq.

•   USS Taylor (FFG 50) conducts a port call in Varna, Bulgaria and continues building regional
    security efforts in the Black Sea region.

•   USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) is en route Marseilles, France as part of commemoration of
    the Great White Fleet.

•   USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG 49) is en route Bata, Equatorial Guinea in support of Africa
    Partnership Station. APS is an ongoing program designed to build partnerships and
    capabilities to improve maritime safety and security in West and Central Africa. This will be
    the first time a U.S. Navy ship has visited Bata.

•   Carrier Strike Group 8, including the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D.
    Eisenhower (CVN 69), is participating in composite unit training exercise. COMPTUEX is
    designed to test capabilities and ensure readiness prior to deployment.
•   USS Alexandria (SSN 757) returns to Groton, CT from a six-month deployment where they
    conducted maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.
    Naval Submarine Base, New London provides port operational support to Alexandria.

•   USS Wasp (LHD 1) conducts 12 burials at sea off the coast of North Carolina. Wasp is
    underway conducting Aviation Readiness Qualifications and Anti-Terrorism/Force
    Protection Assessments.

•   Commander, Destroyer Squadron 40 conducts planning with 50 Reserve Sailors from their
    unit in Houston, Texas, for Southern Seas Deployment 2009. Southern Seas focuses on
    improving partnerships with nations throughout South America, Central America and the
    Caribbean through exercises and theater security cooperation visits.

•   Southern Partnership Station’s High Speed Vessel (HSV) 2 Swift is underway following a
    seven-day port visit to Port Antonio, Jamaica, where training teams from the Navy, Marine
    Corps and Naval Criminal Investigative Service trained 65 Jamaica Defense Forces members
    and civilian port officials in port and waterborne security, small boat maintenance, boarding
    and land navigation. The ship’s crew delivered nearly two tons of medical supplies,
    thousands of textbooks to schools and five dialysis machines to the Ministry of Health.

•   Information System Technicians from U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (NAVSO) and
    U.S. 4th Fleet are in the Dominican Republic installing Automatic Identification Systems
    (AIS) and providing training to partner nation’s members on its operation. AIS, a U.S.
    Department of Transportation venture, is a computer based vessel identification program that
    provides ports and other ships real-time information on friendly vessels within their region.

•   USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG 58) and USS Rodney M Davis (FFG 60) are underway in the
    NAVSO area of focus as part of a counter illicit trafficking support deployment. The
    coordinated actions of the Navy, Coast Guard and Joint Interagency Task Force South have
    been instrumental in interdicting 25 metric tons of cocaine from Oct. 2008 to date for Roberts
    and Davis with an estimated import value of $501 million.

•   USS Boxer (LHD 4) Expeditionary Strike Group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit are
    underway in the Southern California operation area en route a regularly scheduled Western
    Pacific deployment.

•   Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS O’Kane (DDG 77) returns to the Western
    Pacific after providing 49 days of support to 5th Fleet operations.

•   The Norfolk-based guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG 68) departs
    Yokosuka, Japan after a five-day port visit that included the first-ever visit of The Sullivans
    crew to The Sullivans Elementary School.
•   The rescue and salvage ship USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50), with Mobile Dive and Salvage
    Unit 1 embarked, conducts salvage operations in the Saipan Channel to remove dangers to
    navigation. These operations involve removal of obstructions on the sea floor that pose a
    threat to navigation such as rocks and other debris.

•   Riverine Squadron One conducts a graduation ceremony in Al Anbar province in Iraq, for a
    group of Iraqi Army members trained by Riverine Squadron One Sailors, marking another
    Security Force Assistance success in the transition to Iraqi control.

•   Sailors and Guardsmen from Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron One and U.S. Coast
    Guard Port Security Unit patrol with naval forces from Great Britain, Australia and Iraq
    providing territorial water security in the Northern Arabian Gulf.

•   Twenty-five Reservists from Naval Construction Regiment and Naval Mobile Construction
    Battalions 14 and 74 construct a swale and security fence along the U.S.-Mexico border in
    Douglas, Ariz., in support of Joint Task Force-North.

•   Naval Air Station North Island provides airfield operations support for 15 Navy Air Logistics
    Office flights and numerous local squadrons.

•   Naval Base San Diego Personnel Support Detachment processes 145 Sailors reporting for
    Global War on Terror Support Assignment orders and prepares to process 186 Reservists
    mobilizing through Navy Mobilization Processing Site San Diego.

•   The Naval Operations Security Support Team from Navy Information Operations Command
    Norfolk briefs the Family Readiness Group of VFA 143, an FA-18 squadron stationed at
    Oceana Naval Air Station, highlighting the important role family members play in keeping
    themselves and their deployed loved ones safe during deployment.

•   Naval Facilities Engineering Command and Commander, Navy Installations Command are
    completing expansion of Kilo Wharf on U.S. Naval Base Guam. The expanded wharf will
    accommodate the Navy's new class of multipurpose dry cargo/ammunition ships scheduled to
    be in service in 2010. Kilo Wharf is the U.S. Department of Defense's only dedicated
    ammunition wharf in the Western Pacific.

•   Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka utilizes a new energy efficient co-generation plant to
    provide 60 hertz power required to support its ships - this energy program doubles the local
    power capability in support of Fleet operations.

•   Navy Medicine West delivers 12 babies, fills 4,381 prescriptions and treats 318 Emergency
    Room/Urgent Care Clinic patients.

  • 1. A Day in the Navy 10 January 2009 (LINKS ARE TO ASSOCIATED PHOTOS) • On January 10th, 331,331 Active Duty Officers, Sailors and Midshipmen; 121,723 Reserve Component Sailors, with 5,908 Reserves mobilized, and 185,559 civilians are serving in the Department of the Navy. • 283 active ships are in service. 108 (38%) including 2 carriers and 3 large-deck, amphibious ships are underway. • 8,755 Individual Augmentees, 4,229 of which are mobilized Reserves, are deployed on the ground around the world in support of the War on Terrorism. • USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77), the final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, is commissioned in its initial homeport of Norfolk, Va. President George W. Bush and the ship’s namesake, George H.W. Bush, former president and naval aviator, provide remarks, as do Secretary of the Navy, Donald C. Winter and Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Gary Roughead. • USS San Antonio (LPD 17) serves as flagship for the newly formed Combined Task Force 151, a multinational task force that conducts counter-piracy operations in and around the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, in support of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1851. • U.S. Navy ships are part of Combined Task Force Iraqi Maritime and are providing maritime infrastructure protection, security and training on and around the Al Basrah and Khawr Al Amaya Oil Terminals while strengthening the Navy’s partnership with Iraq. • USS Taylor (FFG 50) conducts a port call in Varna, Bulgaria and continues building regional security efforts in the Black Sea region. • USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) is en route Marseilles, France as part of commemoration of the Great White Fleet. • USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG 49) is en route Bata, Equatorial Guinea in support of Africa Partnership Station. APS is an ongoing program designed to build partnerships and capabilities to improve maritime safety and security in West and Central Africa. This will be the first time a U.S. Navy ship has visited Bata. • Carrier Strike Group 8, including the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), is participating in composite unit training exercise. COMPTUEX is designed to test capabilities and ensure readiness prior to deployment.
  • 2. USS Alexandria (SSN 757) returns to Groton, CT from a six-month deployment where they conducted maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility. Naval Submarine Base, New London provides port operational support to Alexandria. • USS Wasp (LHD 1) conducts 12 burials at sea off the coast of North Carolina. Wasp is underway conducting Aviation Readiness Qualifications and Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Assessments. • Commander, Destroyer Squadron 40 conducts planning with 50 Reserve Sailors from their unit in Houston, Texas, for Southern Seas Deployment 2009. Southern Seas focuses on improving partnerships with nations throughout South America, Central America and the Caribbean through exercises and theater security cooperation visits. • Southern Partnership Station’s High Speed Vessel (HSV) 2 Swift is underway following a seven-day port visit to Port Antonio, Jamaica, where training teams from the Navy, Marine Corps and Naval Criminal Investigative Service trained 65 Jamaica Defense Forces members and civilian port officials in port and waterborne security, small boat maintenance, boarding and land navigation. The ship’s crew delivered nearly two tons of medical supplies, thousands of textbooks to schools and five dialysis machines to the Ministry of Health. • Information System Technicians from U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (NAVSO) and U.S. 4th Fleet are in the Dominican Republic installing Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) and providing training to partner nation’s members on its operation. AIS, a U.S. Department of Transportation venture, is a computer based vessel identification program that provides ports and other ships real-time information on friendly vessels within their region. • USS Samuel B Roberts (FFG 58) and USS Rodney M Davis (FFG 60) are underway in the NAVSO area of focus as part of a counter illicit trafficking support deployment. The coordinated actions of the Navy, Coast Guard and Joint Interagency Task Force South have been instrumental in interdicting 25 metric tons of cocaine from Oct. 2008 to date for Roberts and Davis with an estimated import value of $501 million. • USS Boxer (LHD 4) Expeditionary Strike Group and the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit are underway in the Southern California operation area en route a regularly scheduled Western Pacific deployment. • Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS O’Kane (DDG 77) returns to the Western Pacific after providing 49 days of support to 5th Fleet operations. • The Norfolk-based guided-missile destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG 68) departs Yokosuka, Japan after a five-day port visit that included the first-ever visit of The Sullivans crew to The Sullivans Elementary School.
  • 3. The rescue and salvage ship USNS Safeguard (T-ARS 50), with Mobile Dive and Salvage Unit 1 embarked, conducts salvage operations in the Saipan Channel to remove dangers to navigation. These operations involve removal of obstructions on the sea floor that pose a threat to navigation such as rocks and other debris. • Riverine Squadron One conducts a graduation ceremony in Al Anbar province in Iraq, for a group of Iraqi Army members trained by Riverine Squadron One Sailors, marking another Security Force Assistance success in the transition to Iraqi control. • Sailors and Guardsmen from Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron One and U.S. Coast Guard Port Security Unit patrol with naval forces from Great Britain, Australia and Iraq providing territorial water security in the Northern Arabian Gulf. • Twenty-five Reservists from Naval Construction Regiment and Naval Mobile Construction Battalions 14 and 74 construct a swale and security fence along the U.S.-Mexico border in Douglas, Ariz., in support of Joint Task Force-North. • Naval Air Station North Island provides airfield operations support for 15 Navy Air Logistics Office flights and numerous local squadrons. • Naval Base San Diego Personnel Support Detachment processes 145 Sailors reporting for Global War on Terror Support Assignment orders and prepares to process 186 Reservists mobilizing through Navy Mobilization Processing Site San Diego. • The Naval Operations Security Support Team from Navy Information Operations Command Norfolk briefs the Family Readiness Group of VFA 143, an FA-18 squadron stationed at Oceana Naval Air Station, highlighting the important role family members play in keeping themselves and their deployed loved ones safe during deployment. • Naval Facilities Engineering Command and Commander, Navy Installations Command are completing expansion of Kilo Wharf on U.S. Naval Base Guam. The expanded wharf will accommodate the Navy's new class of multipurpose dry cargo/ammunition ships scheduled to be in service in 2010. Kilo Wharf is the U.S. Department of Defense's only dedicated ammunition wharf in the Western Pacific. • Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka utilizes a new energy efficient co-generation plant to provide 60 hertz power required to support its ships - this energy program doubles the local power capability in support of Fleet operations. • Navy Medicine West delivers 12 babies, fills 4,381 prescriptions and treats 318 Emergency Room/Urgent Care Clinic patients.
