This study compared the facilities for co-curricular activities provided by government and private high schools in Peshawar, Pakistan. A total of 175 schools, including 132 private schools and 43 government schools, were surveyed using questionnaires and observations. The results showed that private schools had less qualified heads, fewer trained teachers, and allocated fewer classes per week for co-curricular activities compared to government schools. Private schools also had less open space for sports and fewer sports equipment available. The study recommends that private schools be required to provide adequate facilities for co-curricular activities in order to ensure a well-rounded education for students.

Staff retention strategies in Zimbabwe’s public and private universities: Ret...Premier Publishers
The multiple-case study compared staff retention strategies in Zimbabwe’s public and private universities from the point of view of criterion sampled four public and three private universities’ Returnee Lecturers, respectively. In terms of similarities, the study found out that public and private universities had monetary and non-monetary staff retention strategies. It also observed that both public and private universities were found to have some conditions of service which served as part of retention strategies in those universities. With respect to differences, the study observed that public universities tended to offer better conditions of service in terms of salaries and bonuses, even though both conditions of service lag behind what international universities offer. The study concluded that staff retention strategies in public and private universities tended to differ on paper and implementation approach, but in practice they tended to yield similar results. Also, public universities tended to offer more allowances than private universities because of the support they receive from the government. Private and public universities need to have knowledge of what other local, regional and international competitors offer in terms of staff retention strategies through salary surveys and benchmark to effectively retain their staff.

Education for learners with special needs remains a challenge for developing countries like Lesotho where development of infrastructure and appropriate training for personnel is still at its infancy. With the number of learners with special needs on the rise, lack of basic necessities has compelled such learners to be absorbed in the main stream education system, leaving educators frustrated. Although having all inclusive education as professed by the government may be an ideal situation for learners with special needs, what remains a barrier is the mode of assessment for such learners. The study sought to establish the depth and breadth of the assessment of learners with special needs in Lesotho. The study was conducted using the qualitative methodology. The in depth interviews were conducted in order to get a thorough and informed insight that reveals how learners with special needs are evaluated. Documents such as Education Act 2010, The National Constitution and Children's Protection and Welfare Act 2011 were analysed to assess whether they respond to the needs of such learners. The informant selection techniques employed were convenience and purposive sampling. respondents were selected based on their availability and willingness to respond. The findings were analysed using thematic method of analysis. The study revealed that the government has not done enough to ensure inclusive education. This is evidenced by lack of clear policies for learners with special needs, as well as facilities and trained personnel for such learners. The study identified the level of competencies and the extent of professional development needs of kindergarten teachers in the Sultan Kudarat Division, during the school year 2019 - 2020. The study employed a descriptive method. The study involved 54 kindergarten teachers in the division in accomplishing the 12-item self-assessment instrument. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results revealed that kindergarten teachers have a high level of competencies in content knowledge and pedagogy, learning environment and diversity of learners, curriculum and planning, and assessment and reporting. These indicate that they possess almost all of the competencies of efficient teachers. Results further revealed a very high extent of professional needs in content knowledge and pedagogy and the learning environment and diversity of learners, while they had a high extent of professional needs in the remaining domains. Since they reported very high priorities in content knowledge and pedagogy and the learning environment and diversity of learners, these areas would be the main considerations in the crafting of a professional development plan. by Phoebe L. ABSTRACT : The study focused on the impact of Educational resources on students‟ academic performance
in Economics: a study of some Senior Secondary Schools in Lagos State Educational District one. Research
objectives, question and hypotheses were formulated to guide the direction of the study. The study covers 110
senior secondary students and 40 teachers. Convenience sampling technique was used in selecting the sample
size. 110 of the questionnaires were properly filed and returned. The study relied on the 110 properly filed and
returned questionnaires for analysis. The data for the study was collected through research instrument developed
by the researcher to obtain the appropriate data for the study. Data collected were analyzed using both
descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution and simple percentages
were used to analyze the demographic and socio-economic background of the target respondents and the
research question were analyzed. Pearson product moment correlation analysis and regression analysis were
used to test the stated hypotheses. The research design that was adopted was the descriptive survey design. The
result reveals that educational resources have an impact on students‟ academic performance in Economics. The
finding also reveals that there is a significant effect of the level of qualification and preparation of teachers on
students‟ academic performance in Economics in senior secondary schools. Based on the findings made in this
study, it is therefore recommended that School administrators must constantly review, inspect and monitor
school teaching and learning resources. Constant and consistent monitoring of school resource and ensuring its
availability and proper utilization will make teachers and students take care of the school resources as well as
take learning and academic activity seriously.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between instructional program and academic achievement of students in national examinations in public secondary schools in Tinderet sub county Kenya. The objective of this study was: to determine the impact of leading the instructional program on the students’ academic achievement in national examinations. The study was guided by the effective schools model by Lezotte (2010), which states that an effective school is characterized by seven correlates namely: leading the instructional program, focus on school mission, safety and orderliness of schools, expectations for success, home-school relations, frequent monitoring of students progress and opportunity to learn for students. The researcher employed a survey design targeting all the 18 public secondary schools in Tinderet Sub County, all the 18 principals and the 225 teachers. Stratified sampling technique was used to select 10 schools for the study from the total 18 schools in the distinct. The sampled schools were stratified according to the academic performance for the last three years (2011-2013). All the principals of the sampled 10 schools took part in the study. Simple random sampling was used to select 90 teachers (9 teachers from each school selected). The sample size was 100 respondents. Questionnaires and interview guide were used to collect data. The descriptive survey allowed the generation of both qualitative and quantitative data. Quantitative data was analyzed using the descriptive statistics including frequencies and percentages. Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and Anova were used to make inferences. Qualitative data was put under themes consistent with the research objectives. The analyzed data was then presented in form of graphs, pie charts and tables for easy interpretation. Findings from the study showed that, majority of the principals indicated that they always led the instructional program. Majority of the teachers on the other hand indicated that, principals did not always engage in these leadership practices but did engage sometimes. Analysis of variance between principals' and teachers' responses on similar issues indicated that there was a significant difference in the manner teachers and principals were responding to questions. Findings on the effect of leadership practices on academic performance were consistent as the teachers and principals were in agreement that these leadership practices when applied had a positive effect on academic performance. Correlation test however revealed that the effect was weak as indicated by the correlation coefficients which were below 0.5. The study concluded that; leading the instructional program was not being implemented fully. Abstract
The implementation of the K-12 Senior High School program makes Filipino students competitive globally. On this premise, a study to assess the K-12 Senior High School program of Laboratory High School (LHS) of Cotabato City State Polytechnic College (CCSPC). Also, it explored the resources, teachers' instructional practices, the attainment of the objectives of the program, and the challenges encountered in the implementation. It employed descriptive-evaluative design. It administered survey questionnaires to 202 total number of respondents composed of 169 senior high school students who were chosen randomly and 30 teachers, including three staff, who were selected using Complete Total Enumeration. It was conducted last school year 2019-2020. Results revealed that services and resources evidently provided. The teachers of the LHS have evidently practiced the instructional practices in terms of teaching strategies, classroom management, and assessment of learning. Considering the findings it was concluded that Despite the big class size and with faculty possess degrees appropriate and relevant to the high school program and other qualifications, the LHS maintains its public image of excellence in both curricular and extracurricular activities in which have been a sign that instructional supervision of the Laboratory High School is of a high standard.

Strengths and Areas for Improvement towards Career Advancement of Teachers in...AJHSSR Journal
ABSTRACT :This study aims to determine the challenges faced by the coastal schoolteachers of Matnog
District, Division of Sorsogon Province, school year 2021-2022. It used a survey questionnaire to identify the
demographic profile of the teachers and employed interview schedule through guide questions to collect real-life
experiences and narratives of the challenges, strengths and areas for improvement. Similarly, the primary
sources of data are the nine teaching personnel from Matnog I District and the six teaching personnel from
Matnog II District. Data from the demographic profile were tabulated, analysed and interpreted using
appropriate statistical tools such as frequency count and percentage. The study revealed that majority of the
informants are 31-35 years old, female, married, graduate of a baccalaureate degree, Teacher I for more than 5
years, have an adjectival rating of outstanding in the Individual Performance Commitment Review Form and
joined division level seminar. Moreover, the identified challenges are categorized into incomplete credentials
(master units and training/seminar), locale concern or proximity, budgetary or financial obligations, care
responsibilities, collective expectations and self-doubt. The strengths that was identified are age-group
resiliency, academic credentials, length of service, IPCRF rating and other ancillary involvements while the
areas that need to improve are gender roles/family obligations, academic credentials and professional
development accomplishments. A teacher development plan for teachers in the coastal schools in Matnog was
proposed to help the teachers be eligible for career advancement despite proximity issue.

The study aims in determining the organizational climate that would result in job satisfaction among academic staff in educational settings. Adequate literature on organizational climate and job satisfaction was reviewed. Findings results into the factors that contribute to shape culture, and its results into a framework, to encompass manifestations of organizational culture in relation to academic excellence. Further researchers can use this conceptual model to include few more pre cursors to outcomes to it, also this model can be tested empirically

A Comparative Study of the Facilities of Co-Curricular Activities
Provided by the Government and Private High Schools of
Peshawar
Abstract
Due to growing population, the private sector in education is also contributing to educate the masses in Pakistan.
With growing competition between the government and private sector, there is also a growing concern that the
private schools do not give importance to co-curricular activities. A total sample size of 175 schools was selected
with 132 from private and 43 from government high schools for boys, through proportional sampling methods
and finally surveyed through simple random sampling technique. Questionnaire and personal observations were
carried out to collect the data. The school heads were selected as respondents. Chi square tests and Priority Index
were used for analyzing data. Results showed that the private schools were giving more importance to literary
activities than physical activities. The government schools had trained teachers, open space and enough
equipment for sports as compared to private schools. This study recommends the concerned authorities to ensure
registration of the private schools based on the provision of facilities for co-curricular activities.

Introduction
Aristotle’s emphasis on both mental and physical education was very clear through his saying of “a sound mind
in a sound body”. Thus education is a continuous and life-long process; and should contribute not only to the
mental but also to the physical capabilities of the students. The previously called “Extra-curricular activities”
have rightly been replaced by “Co-curricular activities”. The physical activities refresh the students after mental
harwork. The students participating in these activities have not only good physical health but they have also
proved to be good in their academic grades compared to those students who don’t participate in these activities
(Bashir and Hussain, 2012). Participation in co-curricular activities (CCAs) enhances student’s abilities as they
are reinforced by their own success (Simons-Morton et al., 1999). These activities are now much emphasized by
educationists because of the availability of full time professional teachers, school rooms, time, equipment and
materials (Mukesh, 2013).Two types CCAs i.e, physical (games, athletics and physical training) and literary
(debates, drama speeches) are valued in our educational institutions (Bashir and Hussain, 2012). However, the
CCAs are sub-divided in to literary, physical development, aesthetic and cultural, civic, social welfare, leisure
and excursion (Gajjar, 2014).
With growing population, the government sector is feeling difficulties in provision of free and less
costly education to all the citizens (Ali et al., 2010). Therefore, to accomplish the educational requirements of the
growing population, the private sector is contributing to a great extent. The private schools are not financed by
the state but are fully owned by a person or an organization and they take monthly, per semester or annual fee.
The owners of these private institutions pay annual registration fee to the government. With the growing
competitions among the private and government schools, there arises the question of quality education that caters
the needs of the students. The private schools offer more co-curricular activities to the students than the
government schools (Karim et al., 2011). According to Ali et al. (2010), there were 292 government high schools
and 890 private high schools in Peshawar in 2010. Majority of the people prefer the private institutions because
of the English language instruction system provided by them. However, majority of these private institutions are
supposed to lack enough space for play grounds, trained teachers and sports items. Most of the private School
teachers are under graduates and untrained (Karim et al., 2011). In view of the above, this study was
concentrated upon the investigation of the “comparative study of the facilities of the co-curricular activities
provided by the government and private high schools for boys in district Peshawar”. The study was based on the
six alternate hypotheses given below
HA1. There is significant difference between the academic qualification of the heads of the private and
government high schools for boys.
HA2. There is significant difference between the private and government high schools heads for boys in their
professional teacher training achievements.
HA3. There is significant difference for arranging classes per week for the government and private high schools
for boys.
HA4. There is significant difference between the private and government high schools for boys in the availability
of open spaces for sports grounds.
HA5. There is significant difference between the private and government high schools for boys in the availability
of sports equipments.
HA6. There is significant difference between the private and government high schools for priorities given to the

various types of CCAs.
Methodology
Peshawar was selected as the study site, because it is the capital city of Khyber Pakhthunkhwa, providing an
extensive network of private and government schools for educating the people. The district has an area of about
1,257 sq km, located between 33° 44’ to 33° 15’ north latitude and 71° 22’ to 71° 42’ east longitude. It is has an
elevation of about 1173 feet (358 meters) above sea level. The climate of the study area is extreme i.e., hot and
dry summers and cold winters. The study was delimited to high school for boys only. The survey was carried out
during 2013. As stated in the introduction section, there were 1,184 schools in district Peshawar. We used the
Yamane (1967) formula to calculate the sample size. The equation gave a size of 175 with 7% error of
acceptance. We used proportional sample size for selection of private & government schools. Therefore, we
selected at total of 175 schools, 43 from government and 132 from private sector (Table 1). The high schools
were selected because students studying at these levels are more enthusiastic and energetic for various CCAs. A
standard questionnaire was constructed for the heads of the schools of both sectors. Besides this, personal
observations were also carried out to check the existence of play grounds and sports items in the schools. Simple
random sampling was used for to select the schools from both the sectors. The data collection was a tedious job
and we hired five students of Peshawar University to support us in data collection. The students were properly
trained before the field survey. SPSS version 16 was used for analysis of data. Chi square tests and priority index
(PI) were used for the analysis.

Results and discussions
Results showed that majority of the heads of the private schools had their highest qualifications as B.A (Bachelor
of Arts) or B.Sc (Bachelor of Science) as compared to the heads of the government schools that had their highest
qualifications as M.A (Master of Arts) or M.Sc (Master of Science). The chi square test showed significant
differences between the qualification of government and private schools (Table 2). Therefore the hypothesis that
there is a significant difference between the academic qualification of the government and private high school
for boys is accepted. This may be because there is a proper selection process for teachers in the government
schools and the private schools are made for financial benefits by the private owners, who try to employ low
salary teachers.

We also tried to compare both sectors based on the professional trainings attained by the school heads.
The results showed majority of the heads of the private schools had attained primary teaching certificates (PTC),
and Bachelors of education (B.ed), as compared to the government schools heads. The majority of the
government school heads had attained higher training certificates such as masters of education (M.ed), B.ed and
fewer teachers had attained CT (Certificate of Teaching ) and PTC. Therefore, the hypothesis that there is
significant difference between the professional trainings attained by the heads of both the sectors is accepted
(Table 3). This may be because the concerned authorities have no proper rules and regulations for owners,
opening a private school.

Results also showed that majority of the private schools had arranged one class per week for CCAs as
compared to the government schools who had arranged two classes per week. Therefore the hypothesis that there
is significant difference for allocation of classes per week for the government and private high school is accepted
(Table 4). This may be because the private schools had more emphasis on the literary activities than physical

activities.

Results also showed that majority of the government schools had an open ground for various sports
activities as compared to the private schools. Therefore the hypothesis that there is significant difference
between the private and government high schools for boys in the availability of open spaces as sports grounds is
accepted (Table 5). This may be because majority of the heads of the private schools give emphasis on literary
activities only.

Regarding availability of sports equipments, most of the government schools had the availability of
sports items as compared to private schools. Therefore the hypothesis that there is significant difference between
the private and government high schools for boys in the availability of sports equipments is accepted (Table 6).
This may be because most of the private schools had no open spaces for sports activities and thus no sports
equipments.

To compare all the types of CCAs in both the government and private high schools, we asked the
priorities of both the private school heads (Table 7) and government school heads (Table 8) about all types of
CCAs. Then we calculated the priority indices for each type of CCA and also ranked them according to the
formula given by Mia (1993). The priority indices were then compared through excel program (Figure 1). The
results showed that the private schools gave emphasis to literary and civic development activities. The
government schools gave more importance to excursion, leisure time, social and physical development activities.
The results indicate that the government schools were providing more opportunities of CCAs to the students than
the private schools. This may be because the government schools had sport facilities and open grounds for
different sports activities.

Conclusions and recommendation
This study provides useful policy recommendations for the concerned authorities to ensure provision of co-
curricular activities in private schools in Peshawar district. The results showed that school heads of the
government schools were more qualified and had also attained professional training certificates as compared to
the private schools. The government schools had wide open grounds for different sports activities, whereas
majority of the private schools had no such open space. Majority of the government schools had sports items for
Co-curricular activities in govt. & Prvt. high school for boys in Peshawar

different games, compared to private schools. Although CCAs were provided by both these sectors, but the
private schools were giving more importance to literary activities than physical activities. The study recommends
the concerned authorities to accept registration of private schools on the basis of open space, trained teachers and
sport items availability in their schools. The heads of private schools should be bound to have attained at least
B.A/B.Sc and B.ed so that they may be well aware of the school organization and management.
