4. What is SR and CSR?
SR: Social responsibility is an ethical framework which suggests
that an entity, be it an organization or individual, has an obligation to
act for the benefit of society at large. Social responsibility is a duty
every individual has to perform so as to maintain a balance
between the economy and the ecosystems.
CSR: Now-a-days social responsible becomes very important
objective of business. A company needs to perform social activities
for social welfare and reputation and these activities are known as
CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). Many organizations seek to
have an even greater impact through CSR initiatives that integrate
social values into operational and business strategies. For example,
to protect scarce natural resources, a firm may make a commitment
to use only recycled materials in its packaging of consumer goods.
5. Important of CSR in Today's Business
A strategic approach to CSR is increasingly important to a company's
competitiveness. It can bring benefits in terms of risk management, cost
savings, access to capital, customer relationships, human resource
management, and innovation capacity. It also encourages more social
and environmental responsibility from the corporate sector at a time when
the crisis has damaged consumer confidence and the levels of trust in
business.
CSR requires engagement with internal and external stakeholders so it
enables enterprises to anticipate better and take advantage of fast-
changing expectations in society as well as operating conditions. This
means it can also act as a driver for the development of new markets and
create real opportunities for growth.
Helping to mitigate the social effects of the crisis, including job losses, is
part of the social responsibility of enterprises. In the longer term, CSR
offers a set of values on which to build a more cohesive society and on
which to base the transition to a sustainable economic system.
6. CSR in Bangladesh
CSR is becoming more and more pronounced as the country
has to adapt itself to the process of globalization. But the overall
status of CSR in Bangladeshis still very meager. Lack of Good
Governance, absence of strong labor unions or consumer rights
groups, and inability of the business community to perceive CSR
as a survival pre-condition in export and PR investment local
market constitute some of elements undermining the evolution of
CSR practice.
