This study examined whether self-confidence and socioeconomic status can predict science achievement scores using data from 400 American 8th grade students. Two statistical analyses - two-way ANOVA and multiple regression - were conducted. The regression model found that higher percentages of socioeconomically disadvantaged students and lower self-confidence in learning science both negatively predicted cognitive science reasoning scores. Effect sizes showed socioeconomic status had a slightly larger influence on scores than self-confidence. The study concluded that self-confidence is important for science achievement and future research could explore esteem-boosting interventions.
